Possible lowest price for mid-2017 MacBook Pro?

    Posted: 27 Oct 2018 04:10 PM PDT

I'm waiting until the new Mac comes out to buy a MacBook. Very recently Woot (part of Amazon) discounted them to $999 new. What are the chances they'll be around for that price after the new macs come out? What price would they be discounted to?

The keyboard is starting to fail on my favorite laptop ever - 2018 MBP

    Posted: 27 Oct 2018 08:01 PM PDT

Quick Note: My 2018 MBP is my most prized possession. I baby the thing more than any other object in my life. I NEVER ONCE ATE OVER MY KEYBOARD, NEVER ONCE USED MY KEYBOARD IN DUSTY ENVIRONMENT. The only thing that made me hesitant of purchase was the history of failures on the newer models. I took the gamble after hearing positive reviews of the new gen butterfly keyboard and proceeded with the 2000 dollar purchase. Since then I have been nothing but extremely satisfied with every aspect of this computer. Until...

Unfortunately, a few weeks ago I noticed that the "e" key repeating on my 2018 MBP. I had prayed that this would never happen, and hoped that I'd get at least a few solid years out of the machine before something like this happened. It went away for a little bit but has since popped up intermittently. It has spread to the e, r and t keys now :(. I've been through the preliminary support steps where they try to solve it with software resets. Now not sure whether to deal with it (I don't want some dinged up refurb), which to me is absolutely ridiculous for this kind of investment.

Now I'm in a predicament. I've thought about possible solutions and they all sound kinda bad.

    What I want:

A 2018 MBP that is at least as well kept as mine that doesn't suffer from multiple inputs - hopefully possible

At least a slight assurance that it will not break again - probably not possible

    Options:

Get refurb - No guarantee it wont have dings, other issues

Repair - Laptop needs to be opened, could be temporary fix, also I need to use a computer everyday

New Replacement - this would be ideal of course, but I'm not sure how often Apple does this, also no guarantee of future problems

Refund - Obviously this is a insane stretch but I've heard it happening before. There's no way I'm dropping 2k again on this computer, but I've already perfected my workflow on MacOS now and could lose tons of productivity or power by switching to a newer laptop or older macbook.

    Suggestions?

Best power bank for new 2018 Macbook Pro?

    Posted: 27 Oct 2018 06:26 PM PDT

Just bought the new 2018 Macbook Pro. I also have a Google Pixel 2 XL and will probably be buying the Bose QuietComfort 35 soon.

Given these devices, what power bank should I buy? One friend recommended the Omnicharge 20, but I'm not sure.

Using a MacBook in closed clamshell mode

    Posted: 27 Oct 2018 12:50 PM PDT

Hey, I'm thinking of buying a MacBook Air (never had a macOS device before) and using it in closed display mode with an external monitor and keyboard. Is there anything I should know before doing that, or is it as comfortable as it looks? The first problem that came to my mind was that I have to search for a monitor with 3,5mm jack output in order to sort out possible audio problems(don't want to use speakers). Thank you in advance

MacBook Air Running Slowly- Need help diagnosing problem

    Posted: 27 Oct 2018 07:45 AM PDT

So I've been using my 2015 MacBook Air without issue for 2-3 years now, and in early Sept it became very slow. It comes and goes, but it will stall doing something simple like opening Gmail, or scrolling through a word document. Sometimes it will work smoothly, but more and more often it just starts slowing down to the point that menial tasks now take minutes instead of seconds, it's wasting a lot of time and I use this computer for graduate work. Sometimes it's a website taking minutes to load, sometimes it's freezing or stalling of Microsoft Word or other offline software, sometimes text lags behind as I type or the mouse cursor highlights don't update as I move it. I've taken many troubleshooting steps, but if you know of any others I'd love to hear them. Apologies for length, but this has been quite the saga:

I downloaded Memory Clean that tracks my RAM usage (I have 8 GB) and whenever my computer slows down the RAM isn't doing anything usual, and the slowness can happen with 4 GB free or with 2.5 GB free, it doesn't seem to affect it. Also when slowness occurs, my activity monitor doesn't show any unusual processes taking up a lot of CPU. CPU usage will increase when I'm using some software, but the processes are just from that software.

My hard drive is only 33% full, and is solid state so the age of the hard drive shouldn't be slowing the computer down, right? (Correct me if I'm wrong) My desktop is also empty as I've been told that can cause slowness as well. FileVault is also not turned on.

I have cleared my cache and cookies, and I have actually fully wiped my computer and reinstalled all my apps one by one. I didn't reinstall Spotify, any browsers besides Safari, any games, any windows software runners like Wine, or anything else the Genius Bar said could be slowing down my MacBook (though it ran fine with all that software on it for 2 years, so idk why it should be an issue now). The only remotely energy intensive software I do have I need for research (Igor Pro), and it worked flawlessly for 2 years so if that's the problem it means there is something wrong with my laptop, as my version of the software has not changed.

I've also upgraded to Mojave but it hasn't improved the slowness either

I have been to and from the apple store numerous times and they've run all the diagnostics and every one comes back saying nothing is wrong with the hardware in my laptop. They said the best way to see if software was the issue was to completely wipe my computer and restore everything little by little, but the problem persists. One employee actually acknowledged that taking 2 minutes to open a web page was not normal (and experienced the issues I was having), and had me send it in for repairs, where they said they could not replicate my symptoms so no repairs were done.

I'd really appreciate any other troubleshooting ideas. Is it possible that it's a hardware problem but the Apple store diagnostics just aren't picking it up? How reliable are those tests? Considering it's in Apples best interest to not have to repair/replace my MacBook, I'm skeptical. If you have had issues like this, how was it resolved? Were you able to get a repair/replacement through AppleCare? I really can't afford a new computer right now, and this one functions, I'm just getting tired of wasting so much time using it, so I want to do whatever I can to get it running again.

Thanks for reading, I know this was long!

    Choosing MacBook Pro

    Posted: 27 Oct 2018 10:58 AM PDT

    Hello all,

I am new to this sub so be nice :) I am looking to get a new Macbook Pro 15 Inch model. I live in the UK and want to get the best deal possible as I am a university student and don't have loads of money. Currently I have 2 options:

Currys and PC World have got one in store for base model mid 2017 for £1,749.

Apple Website have student discount for the 2018 one for £2,114.40.

What one would you suggest I go for considering my situation with saving money being a priority?

    Thanks Max

    Overwhelming decision

    Posted: 27 Oct 2018 10:12 AM PDT

Hi everyone So I plan to buy a MacBook from best buy on Black Friday or Cyber Monday. My price range is no more than 900$. (It's because I buying the iPad pro 10.5 256gb or 64gb for less than 500$ after discounts) With it being 800$ I was gonna buy the MACBOOK AIR (i5, 128gb). I plan on using it for movies shows essays textbook reading browsing no games storing my notes and drawings I take from my iPad pro, and taking it to college. So atm at best buy the price is only 875$, then I get a student discount so 725$ then black Friday probably 675$. That's a good price but am I getting what I need. I've read comments and done research saying 128gb is not enough and the screen is bad and it gets slow after a while. If I buy this laptop I need it to last at least 4 years.

Then there's THE NEW MACBOOK AIR COMING OUT WHO ELSE IS HYPED BUT BROKE 😍

SO I want to buy this but I heard the price will be 1.2k. also I heard that since theyll be higher retina the battery will drain faster. Even though I'll be buying on Black Friday the price may only drop to 1k.

    So basically

Is 128gb enough for a MacBook air? Should I get the MacBook air if the new one is to expensive is it worth it? I heard they might discontinue it also. I need to feel comfortable with my purchases. I'll be spending no more than 1.5k for the iPad pro and whichever MacBook I'll be getting

Top bar disappears every time I fullscreen a video.

    Posted: 27 Oct 2018 02:34 AM PDT

I don't know if this is the right sub to ask. Anyways, every time I go fullscreen a video and go back, the top bar (tabs, bookmarks, etc) disappear. I can hover my mouse on the top and it would easily come back but it gets annoying that I have to do that every time I watch a video on fullscreen.

I'm using google chrome and it's up to date. Restarted my MacBook, which is a pro 13 in retina display, a couple of times. I also disabled some extensions but nothing is working. This is what it looks like when I exit a fullscreen video https://imgur.com/a/zlVZFBV

First time MacBook user - normal issues?

    Posted: 27 Oct 2018 12:38 AM PDT

I love my MacBook, but at the same time, I feel disappointed that I paid $1,800 (after taxes, including student pricing) and have so little space. I love the display, MacOS, everything. I switched from an HP laptop (nothing special) and I love it.

I have about 30GB of space left, and am constantly paranoid now. I have most of my documents and movies etc stored on an external harddrive. I just can't believe for $1,800 - you get 128GB of space. I had a 1TB laptop before, but figured hey, I can store most things on my harddrive. Which isn't a huge deal, but I do like trying out new programs and I feel really limited by the lack of space.

My battery life isn't awesome, either. I'm good at monitoring how much power I'm using; brightness, programs open, etc. My main use is note taking in class, where I'll only have Microsoft Word open and no programs running in the background. I find the battery to be quite weak and when I ran my product # to see if my model qualified for the battery replacement, no go. So just a bad battery life, I suppose.

My biggest issue though... the fan. I'll be on Google Chrome working on research, so I'll have 4-6 tabs open. Not much going on; no autoplay or fancy videos loading. The fan kicks in bigtime, and when I go into activity monitor, kernel_task is using about 35% of my memory.

I probably sound really ridiculous... my apologies. I'm trying to figure out if the issues I'm facing are quite common, or if there's something I'm doing wrong. Unfortunately there's no Apple store where I am, otherwise I'd usually just bring it in and talk to someone for clarity.

I really do love my MacBook, the storage thing is my own fault for cheaping out and assuming I'd be okay with that space when, in my gut, I knew that at the very LEAST I should have done 256 (which probably would have been fine).

Thanks for any insight! And if you have any suggestions for what I can do to get the most out of my MacBook, please feel free to suggest. I love how I'm able to seamlessly use my iPad and iPhone now!

How to undervolt the GPU in Macbook pro in bootcamp

    Posted: 27 Oct 2018 12:14 AM PDT

I have a 2015 MacBook pro with the M370X graphics card and I use windows 10 with bootcamp. I already undervolt the CPU with ThrottleStop and i'd like to undervolt the graphics card by 10% or so because I think it will make a big difference to the cooling aspect without much performance penalty. I've already tried the obvious MSI Afterburner and unlocking voltage control etc. but I can't access the voltage control. Can anyone help offer some advice on how to do this please?
