TIL iOS randomizes your MAC address when scanning for untrusted wifi networks, to prevent malicious tracking

    Posted: 29 Sep 2018 07:44 PM PDT

    From the iOS Security Guide:

iOS uses a randomized Media Access Control (MAC) address when conducting Wi-Fi scans while it isn't associated with a Wi-Fi network. These scans could be performed in order to find and connect a preferred Wi-Fi network or to assist Location Services for apps that use geofences, such as location-based reminders or fixing a location in Apple Maps. Note that Wi-Fi scans that happen while trying to connect to a preferred Wi-Fi Network aren't randomized.

iOS also uses a randomized MAC address when conducting enhanced Preferred Network Offload (ePNO) scans when a device isn't associated with a Wi-Fi network or its processor is asleep. ePNO scans are run when a device uses Location Services for apps that use geofences, such as location-based reminders that determine whether the device is near a specific location.

Because a device's MAC address now changes when disconnected from a Wi-Fi network, it can't be used to persistently track a device by passive observers of Wi-Fi traffic, even when the device is connected to a cellular network. Apple has informed Wi-Fi manufacturers that iOS Wi-Fi scans use a randomized MAC address, and that neither Apple nor manufacturers can predict these randomized MAC addresses.

How common are scams on Swappa?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 06:45 AM PDT

Seller on Swappa was selling an Iphone X that he didn't have possession of. I've been charged the 700 dollars, but haven't received the refund. Paypal says that the reason is because he has insufficient funds to refund my purchase. Now I have to deal with a Paypal dispute that will probably last for another month.

To add salt to the wounds, Swappa hid my review of the guy? What's the point in reviews if the Swappa staff can just hide them. This so called "secure" environment seems like such a sham.

Hands-on impressions of the Dual-SIM features of iPhone XS Max (imported Hong Kong version with two physical SIM slots)

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 03:08 AM PDT

Although I live in Japan, I imported a dual-SIM Hong Kong-version iPhone XS Max via https://dualsimiphones.com -- this is the one in which you can insert two physical SIM cards, which I really wanted because I have different plans with different advantages for voice and data. It shipped on Wednesday from Hong Kong and FedEx brought it to me on Thursday, so I was lucky to receive it pretty quickly. I think I'm one of the first people to be using one of these outside of China.

I've been testing it with two SIM cards from two different Japanese carriers. Here are my impressions:

    The Pros

    • Although it was an imported phone from out of market, no issues using two Japanese SIMs. It'll work with SIM cards from any carrier, as far as I can tell. Carrier features were all there as is normal with any other iPhone.

    • You need to set one of the SIM cards to use for data, and the other one can do calls and text messages. You can change which SIM card to use for data whenever you want.

    • As everyone knows, you can set names for the two sim cards. What people might not know is that with the first letter of the name you set for the SIM card showing up as an icon representing the SIM, you can set interesting things like emojis to differentiate the SIMs, and the emojis show in all menus the first letter would have shown in.

    • The way the two SIM cards are put into the SIM tray is really unique. There's a little clasp that holds in the one on the bottom and doesn't let it fall out, while the one on top sits on top like a normal iPhone SIM card tray.

    • Apple pay (including Felica for Japan-only payments) all works normally.

    • For me, it's a big payoff I've been looking forward to, since I don't have to carry around a mobile router for my data SIM anymore, and I will be able to make a lot of use of the dual-SIM feature when I travel internationally as well.

    The Cons

    • You can only enable VoLTE on the SIM which is selected for data. The secondary SIM is 3G-only. On the bright side, Apple's spec page promises an update to dual-VoLTE by the end of the year. Maybe iOS 12.1 will have this feature?

    • One of my SIM cards requires you to install an APN profile from the MVNO in order to get data working. The problem is, you can only install one profile at a time, so every time I want to switch which SIM is used for data, I need to uninstall the profile, then re-install it after switching back. Since I don't switch which SIM is used for data very often, it's only a minor annoyance... I keep the profiles in the email app so I can install them even without internet connectivity. It would be really nice if Apple could allow different profiles to be installed for each SIM.

    • The infamous charging bug is there for the Hong Kong model too. If it sits around for a while without being plugged in, some of the time, plugging it in doesn't start charging unless you wake the phone up first. Let's hope this gets fixed.

And those are basically my impressions so far. If anyone wants to know more about the dual SIM features, feel free to ask and I'll respond to the comments.

If you upgraded to the Xs or Xs Max from an older touch id phone and for some reason don't see the hype about the OLED screens then check out this video. Great video to test not only the blacks on your phone but the vibrant colors too. Once you see the difference you'll understand the hype.

Question about iPhone XS Max purchased at Best Buy

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 05:37 AM PDT

I was able to find an iPhone the day after launch at Best Buy. I usually buy mine from Apple, but they were understandably out of stock. I purchased my phone out right (e.g. no payment plan) and selected Verizon as my carrier. My understanding is that Verizon phones were unlocked which doesn't seem to be the case anymore. So, should I have bought an unlocked phone from Apple directly? Or does me owning my phone effectively make it unlocked since I am not in a payment plan? I like to be able to change carriers if/when needed.

iPhone XS max says I have software update but I don’t?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 07:47 AM PDT

I was on the 12 beta on my X, when I updated to the XS max it somehow still had me on the beta program even though my device wasn't registered. Now the other night a prompt came up to install 12.1 beta and I clicked no real fast and ever since then I have a red 1 on my settings and when I go into software update it says I'm up to date.

    How can I clear this?

    Battery replacement for the SE

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 04:07 AM PDT

I bought the SE a few months ago because the 8+ is too big for my hands and ive dropped it a couple of times. I am loving the SE so far and im planning to keep it for as long as I can but my issue is the battery replacement in the future. Battery health is still at 98%. If it drops at 80% I will bring it to apple store but will they still replace my battery even if the SE is no longer sold in the stores? (1-2 years from now)

    Fast charger recommendations for Xs?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 07:53 AM PDT

Hello, just picked up an iPhone Xs and looking for a good fast charger. Any recommendations? I was looking at this one. Is this a good choice? Do I need a certain cable for this to work, or could I just use the stock cable? Thanks!
