Am I being lied too about my Fiancé’s MacBook repair?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 04:25 PM PDT

Quick backstory, She was quick cleaning the screen with a semidamp paper towel when the screen flickered.

I subsequently let the device dry off in rice and waited a few days, when I tried later the device was showing the picture but backlight isn't working. I do quick google diagnosis and the backlight driver seems like the issue, a few minutes later watching Louis Rossman videos and confident I've nailed the problem after I use lightening cable to verify the device is working.

Skip to 2 weeks later (couldn't drop off device due to family issue)

I find and contact a shop off yelp and they seemed like a reputable local repair shop for Mac, the same day he contacts me with pictures of the device open and dirty and some liquid telling me he was going to clean up the device and get back to me with more information. He doesn't get back to me so I ask him for an update, he tells me that he's working on it and it turned into something bigger than he expected. I ask him to explain which he does not elaborate so I explained to him I'm not trying to spend $550 for a repair that I am 95% certain is the driver. He assures me that the repair will not be expensive, he is just trying to figure out how much it would cost to fix.

    One week goes by.....

I reach out to him today asking for an update on the device and he tells me

" I tried to call you to let you know... board has damage that is fixable but the screen took a hit and it's a $550 screen. Let me know what you want me to do...

    Thanks"

    My two options are

    1. believe him and do the repair/get a new MacBook. (Which I am super skeptical about)

    2. I explain to him that I have documentation that the device was working via lightning cable. I pay him for a diagnostic and cleaning while explaining to him that if I take it somewhere else and everything is not original or worse that I will be filing a small claims suit for a new device and refund plus secondary diagnostic fee

    New Mac book pro

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 12:15 PM PDT

I've received a Mac book pro for a gift before I go back to college and I'm slightly computer illiterate but I'm surprised by the lack of ports. Is there an object that I can buy that would allow me to use ethernet at the same time as a usb device with this computer? As far as I can tell all that the computer has is a head phone jack a plug in for the charger and a second hole that is identical to that one.

is my 2014 macbook air worth repairing?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 07:34 PM PDT

hello! i have a macbook air 2014 model. it broke in late 2016. i have no idea what the hell happened to it. i came back inside the house to use it and it was dead. literally, dead. black screen, the charging doesn't work, nada. i tried EVERYTHING in my possession to make it turn on, once again, nada. i took it to an apple center last summer and they had no clue what was wrong with it. they then wanted to charge me $400 to send it off to california. i declined. now i need it for school, should i take it to a close work friends computer repair shop to get it fixed, or is it 'outdated' and i shouldn't bother with it. thanks a bunch!

also, what would be a good price for me to stick at for repair. for example, would $400 be a lot to fix it? i'm speaking rhetorically.

    mbp 2018 incredibly hot

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 06:31 PM PDT

as title says, I have had computer since it was released, so it's done with the background set up information. The computer is always incredibly hot, around the touchbar is uncomfortably hot to touch with fingers. All parts of the case are very warm, unlike my older retina mbp. Is there potentially something wrong? It's annoying because even when I type my wrists are being heated.

T2 Startup Security Utility not recognising admins

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 03:45 PM PDT

I am trying to change the secure boot configuration of the T2 chip on a 15" 2018 MacBook Pro but when I select 'enter macOS password' it comes up with an error: No administrator was found. When I go into installer logs startup security is giving errors for each admin account: failed to find KEK on device node /dev/disk2s1 and UUID (the account ID) failed to find KEK for admin (account name) I recently erased and restored macOS to fix an encryption error common with preinstalled macOS on T2 machines. I'm currently trying to install windows 10 but near the end of the installation on the windows side it errors: windows cannot modify the boot configuration At first I thought it had something to do with the encryption error, but since that's fixed but still not installing it's probably the T2.

Want to factory reset-- but I want to save my Adobe applications.

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 03:31 PM PDT

My macbook's been a tank for me, but it's become a clutter and it's time to wipe it clean. However, there are a bunch of $$ pre-installed programs (Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator Final cut pro, etc) that I got with my university program 6 years ago. (I would buy a brand new macbook, hand it over to the school IT department and they installed everything for me)

I don't want to pay hundreds of dollars and buy them all over again. How can I move them into an external hard drive/ etc and reinstall them into my factory-reset macbook?

    12” MacBook advice

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 02:51 PM PDT

Thinking about purchasing an Apple refurbished 12" MacBook with 16gb ram and i7 processor during the upcoming tax-free weekend. It's around $1400. Any advice?

Background: I've been using a Chromebook 14 for a few years and mostly haven't missed having a real laptop. It is frustrating not being able to do the occasional basic task like use an external disc drive or make something on illustrator. I "rented" a 12" MacBook for two weeks from Best Buy and liked the size. I'm going 16gb ram and i7 for flexibility and longevity, even though it's probably completely unnecessary for my every day use, which is why I value the portability of the MacBook over the power of the MacBook Pro.

    Installing Windows on Macbook Air

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 09:57 AM PDT

Couple Questions. I literally need windows for 5 minutes every morning to run downloads into a management system for my business. Installing Windows at the minimum partition I should be good right? Also where do you guys buy your keys for cheap? Everything I find online is from 2 years ago.

How much can I get for my 2012 MBP (1 TB)

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 07:42 AM PDT

I'm interested in selling my 2012 MBP (non retina) since I barely used it. It has a 1 TB HDD and 4 GB of RAM. Prices vary on it and I think demand has gone down. I bought it originally for $200 and that was with the broken HDD it came with.

would imacs or macbooks have better performance when you take into account and adjust for the negative effects of heat?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 01:13 PM PDT

it's been said that laptops have heat problems relative desktops which is significantly better at that.

but i dont know if the heat of laptops is significantly worst/better than a desktop.

    has there been any analysis/studies?

    anyone know?

since desktops generate more heat due to specs, would the net result comparatively after cooling be in higher or lower?

would either or (laptop or desktop) affect performance?

Bright horizontal lines appeared on my MacBook Pro (Late 2013)

What could be the cause? Is my GPU just faulty? Is there a way I could fix it?

I tried resetting the SMC and the NVRAM but still the same. :(
