    [META] /r/Apple's Wiki: The Reboot

    Posted: 08 Aug 2018 11:53 AM PDT

    Hey /r/Apple!

We are on the road to 1 million subscribers and we are prepping the subreddit for the big milestone.

The first step is rebooting our Wiki. If you have visited it in the past few months, you might have noticed that the Wiki lacked information that would be useful for our users.

A couple of months ago, I picked up the project to add more Wiki pages and update/add useful information, but at the rate I'm working at, I will never finish it. Which is why I turn on you, /r/Apple, to help us update/reboot the Wiki.

    Here is the current roadmap:

I have Reddit Gold for those of you who contribute the most to the Wiki. If you go above and beyond, you can see something else like a $5-$10 App Store/iTunes Store gift card.

So, what do you say /r/Apple? Can you help us out?

    Direct link to Wiki

    Couple of rules/information though:

    • You need a little bit above of 500 subreddit karma to edit/create Wiki pages. You can check how much subreddit karma you have by heading to this link and clicking/tapping on "show karma breakdown by subreddit" on the right side.
    • Your account must be a little bit older than 6 months in order to create/edit Wiki pages.
    • Anyone trolling on the Wiki pages (whether is deleting, writing a bunch of non-sense, and trolling in general) will face a ban.

If you have any other concern, let me know!

Getting replacement AirPods - My wonderful experience.

    Posted: 08 Aug 2018 07:39 PM PDT

I got my AirPods in April. They started off as an amazing product. They would sync to my phone instantly, and the battery life was great. In the past month, my AirPods had started to have two big issues. The first is that they stopped connecting to my iPhone. They would connect about once every ten tries. The second issue is that may Airpods would not always charge when they were in the charging case. After about a month of dealing with this, I decided to contact Apple support. I contacted them yesterday morning, and within a few minutes, I had an appointment for this afternoon. Today I went to the Apple store at 4:00. I checked in with one of the employees, and they asked me to sit down at a table. A minute later, another Apple store employee came out and started to help me. He was very understanding and asked to me re-create the problems. He told me that because my AirPods were under warranty, and that because he could not discern whether the charging case or the individual earbuds were causing the issues, that I would get a brand new pair of AirPods, charging case and all, for free. He went to get them from the back of the store, came back 5 minutes later, and gave them to me. I walked out of the Apple store at 4:15. It literally only took 15 minutes to get them replaced. It is absolutely amazing how well Apple takes care of their consumers. This is whole experience has really shown me how much better Apple is as a company compared to some of the other technology companies that are out there. IMO, Apple's customer service and support is unrivaled.

Apple says the iPhone doesn't listen to your conversations

It's annoying that deleting an app on a free trial doesn't remove the subscription

    Posted: 08 Aug 2018 10:05 AM PDT

Or even draw attention to it. Maybe removing the app should have a pop-up that says "you have an active subscription. Would you like to unsubscribe?"

My favorite iPhone (and the one I use)

    Posted: 08 Aug 2018 07:11 PM PDT

The iPhone SE. In my opinion, it was the best apple ever made. Nice size and heft. Wonderful screen. First iPhone I owned (started my collection). Upgraded from a windows phone (snicker) and don't want to leave iOS. Second favorite is the iPhone 8, wonderful look and nice for me. Won't leave my little SE until it is obsolete. It and the 5s look nice together on my desk.

Replacement Beats from Apple: Great Warranty

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 12:04 AM PDT

Seeing the Airpods post inspired me to contact Apple chat support after I was surprised to find the inside plastic of my Beats Studio 3s cracked after 10 months of use, still under warranty. The plastic fell right off and the right earcup slid right off with the extender. Looks like the plastic was the only thing keeping that from happening.

I'm very careful with my headphones, only around my neck or in the case when not used. My guess is that pulling them around my neck caused enough strain to crack the headphones, but the design should account for this very normal use.

Regardless, I assumed that this would be treated as accidental damage so I decided just to deal with it and get new headphones later.

Anyway, I just contacted Apple chat support, explained exactly the issue, and they're replacing the headphones!

Make sure you contact Apple support if you feel like damage happened that wasn't your fault. Looks like Apple really does respect that warranty.

How many people jumped from taking notes on a laptop/macbook to using an ipad + apple pen?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2018 05:29 AM PDT

I've got a macbook, but am very tempted to try out the new pricefriendly ipad + apple pen to take notes with during class as I've noticed that I'm pretty much braindead and just writing down everything that the lecturer says without any understanding of it.

Would like to see how many people that jumped from that step, and if it's worth it for me :)

The ipad would then primarily be for my studies, reading books and media browsing, while the macbook is for heavier duties of course.

    Recently switched from android

    Posted: 08 Aug 2018 01:37 PM PDT

This isn't too recent, but 8 months ago I switched from android. I had used android devices for 2 years at that point. I was fed up with the constant crashing, bugs, apps going rogue, but worst of all after using Google maps to find my way back home on a really cold day I went back inside and then my phone battery dropped nearly INSTANTLY by around 30%, and ever since then a 100% charge would only last me about 2 hours. I had reset it 3 times with no luck. The phone was also laggy at times, and the picture quality sucked. This was all on an S7.

So in January I did something I thought I'd never do - switch to iPhone. Now I know the battery thing could probably happen to any smartphone, but I was genuinely getting sick of android itself for more reasons such as the ugly fonts and emojis (when you use social media a fuckton like I do, those fonts and emojis are all that you see). Once I got my iPhone 8+ I was simply blown away. It was lightning fast, the charging cable was double sided (not a huge deal I know, but coming from someone who only used android devices I didn't even know this was a thing), the beautiful emojis, how polished the phone felt, both inside and out. My biggest worry was the screen resolution, which the screen is nothing short of beautiful.

When I had bought my S7 I started feeling a sense of regret about 3 months later. Maybe that was because the S8 came out 3 months later, maybe it's because I felt like I truly had wasted my money on the S7 specifically. But despite some of the issues with iOS, 8 months later it still feels like the same brand new device like when I got it 8 months ago, which still amazes me because every time I use the phone it feels timeless, as if it's not aging or getting worse over time - a dreadful feeling I kept getting the longer I had my S7. To anyone considering to switch over trust me it's worth it. The pros may not stack as high when compared to android on paper, but it's the unbeatable user experience that makes it all worth it.

edit: should clarify that the S7 was not my only android device. I was using a Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 before I got my S7.

    Macbook pro touch bar position

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 03:08 AM PDT

Random thought so gotta pop it here before I forget it. Was looking at these windows laptops where the touchpad acts as a secondary screen and wondering would it have been a better idea for Apple to place the touch bar between the keyboard and the trackpad ie at the bottom of the keyboard rather than the top? Yay or nay

Image in signature using stock iOS Mail app?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 02:21 AM PDT

Been looking online but I can't seem to find out if is it possible. I don't see why they would let you do it in the Mac app but not on the iOS app.

Or are there any third party apps for iOS that has this feature?
