Posted: 08 Aug 2018 04:29 PM PDT My late '16 MacBook Pro currently has APFS as its file system even though I installed Mac OS Mojave after a format and chose Extended because I was having issues earlier. I found it to be a bit unstable so I am going to format it again and install High Serra, but I am wondering which file system to choose in doing so? I seem to be having a lot of problems with Boot Camp on both High Sierra and Mojave, for some reason. [link] [comments]
Clean install of mojave with mojave already installed Posted: 08 Aug 2018 08:51 PM PDT Hey guys, a bit new to mac os (last mac I had was a early/mid 2010 MBP). I'm just curious, I have Mojave installed currently that was installed over high sierra on my 2018 MBP. Can I simply go erase the drive (after holding command R on boot), then click the reinstall macos option, or do I need to get Mojave on a flash drive and reinstall it after erasing? No progress indicator while searching in Finder? Posted: 08 Aug 2018 06:31 PM PDT Sorry if I'm missing something obvious but when I'm searching in Finder I get no spinning progress indicator in the status bar. The searches appear continually but generally I have no idea if it's finished its search or is still going on. Kind of annoying. When googling I can't really find anything since the icon is apparently supposed to be in the right hand corner of the Finder status bar spinning while searching. Anybody else have a missing search progress indicator in High Sierra? [link] [comments]
Personal Inventory Software (Free) Posted: 08 Aug 2018 01:28 PM PDT Looking for software that will allow me to have a database of equipment I own and keep pictures with them. Hopefully free. [link] [comments]
My entire User profile was deleted after two restarts? Posted: 08 Aug 2018 02:07 PM PDT Hello, I was browsing in the interwebs on my Mac for a bit until it started to restart for no reason. After restarting, it showed a message (paraphrasing) "there was a problem with something something, device has restarted" (I only had like 5 seconds to read it, sorry) and to press any key to continue. This happened twice. When the restart finished, I was met with the login window, however, my icon wasn't there. I looked into User settings and it's like my whole account was deleted, even though it was the top administrator. (IIRC you can't delete those?) If someone can help me as to why this happened? I'm on an ancient 2013 Macbook pro, so I run into a lot of minor problems, but nothing like this. Also is there anyway to restore my files? I have files that are important to me on there. (yes, I'm an idiot for not backing them up, but to tell you the truth, I was planning on backing them up after I kept getting the glitchy screens) [link] [comments]
No Filevault password requested at boot time Posted: 08 Aug 2018 09:35 AM PDT So i filevault encrypted my two SSDs and my external Time Machine HD. I am asked for a password to decrypt my data SSD and my Time Machine disk after logging in but not for my system SSD. As i understand it the system SSD is now decrypted with my user password. But user passwords can be easily resetted ("resetpassword") so it would be a good idea to set a firmware password which is then requested at boot time. Is that correct? [link] [comments]

HTML Email Signatures - why can't I get them to work in Mac Mail when they work fine on gmail.com? Posted: 08 Aug 2018 06:57 AM PDT I have an email signature hosted on my website with images and hyperlinks (do we still say hyperlinks?). For the most part it seems like the only way to add an html signature to mail is copy it from a web page and paste it in your signature. That doesn't work out for me. Images are missing, font's are wrong, everything is misaligned, etc. If I paste the same group of elements in to my signature in gmail.com it works great. I just use google as my email provider but never go to gmail.com for emailing. I use Mail on my iMac for most of my work. Is there anything I can do differently to get the signature to work? Is there a most specific place I should be asking this question? [link] [comments]
Posted: 08 Aug 2018 01:36 PM PDT I keep running into an issue with Maps where some tiles are not loading properly or loading the wrong part of the map. Here are some examples at various zoom levels, all positioned around NYC: https://imgur.com/a/fvodV3u Seems like it could be a caching issue? Anyone to flush said cache? [link] [comments]
How can I toggle function keys from my dock? Posted: 08 Aug 2018 09:23 AM PDT I used to have a script on my dock that I could click and it would toggle the use of function keys (F1, F2, etc.). Basically its job was to open System Preferences and check the box for that under Keyboard. I don't remember how I installed the script and seem to have deleted it. I found some instructions online but I know nothing about Terminal or Script Editor or anything so I'm kinda lost. I'm using High Sierra 10.13.5. Thanks for any help you can give! Posted: 08 Aug 2018 07:09 AM PDT Hi everyone When I started this job, I had been given a choice between a Macbook Pro and a Surface laptop. Since the Surface only came in 13 inch, I went for the Macbook, thinking whether I get annoyed by Windows 10 or MacOS won't make much of a difference. I must admit, the laptop isn't all bad (but I wouldn't spend my own money on it either) but there is one thing that makes want to curse Steve Jobs' name: The keyboard. I was given the Mac keyboard without number block. I totally loathed that thing. Since Apple does not sell a wired full sized keyboard anymore, I went with a thirdparty knock-off. It works reasonably okay. Only thing is I still detest this layout. I have to work with engineers from various big companies over webex. I have a Swiss German Mac layout on MacOS, I have a Swiss German standard layout in the Win10 VM and the Citrix session, and the engineers usually connect with a US keyboard that will or will not behave through webex. I want to simplify this. At one time I used a windows keyboard and just mapped the command key to the windows key. That worked reasonably well, however I kept having issues with special characters, which I use somewhat regularly as I have to make scripts in PowerShell. I tried creating my own keymap with Ukulele but that was really hit and miss and worked sometimes and sometimes not. Since I can't get a new laptop for another few years, what is the best way to rape MacOS into behaving with a standard keyboard? A way that is surefire and permanent? Also is it possible to have different settings for the built-in keyboard and the external one? Since the touchbar has been shoved down my throat I'd like to access F keys via Fn on the built-in but use them directly on the hardware keyboard. Thank you. [link] [comments]
