10.5 vs 12.9 iPad pro for teachers

    Posted: 22 Jul 2018 09:45 AM PDT

I am calling upon the wisdom of the experts out there! Any advice will be much appreciated!

I am a secondary school teacher who uses Google Classroom regularly to set assignments. I often print these out and hand mark these or type directly into them from a computer to give feedback to the students. Since I will have a lot of A Level classes next year, I have decided that it will be quicker and more efficient for me to get an iPad pro and an Apple Pencil to mark these directly, and so that I can create personalised handwritten topsheets which they can print and have a digital copy. I have been thinking about this for a year now and have decided to invest in this piece of kit to make my life easier. I also have a MacBook Air and various other Apple products, so the efficiency of these all syncing up is a real draw!

I intend to use my iPad for annotating and marking students' work, using iDoceo, Notability or Goodnotes for general organisation, for internet research, editing powerpoints and presentations, updating data on Google Sheets, and for Netflix ('cause a teacher's got to have some down time)! I understand that the 10.5 will be the most light and portable option and this definitely draws me to it, but I feel that I might need the 12.9 to make the marking (the main reason for my purpose) and planning easier. I'm not sure whether I'll need to zoom in and out and swipe across to see the whole text at once when I'm marking if I get the 10.5 which puts me off as this doesn't seem very efficient, but the size of the 12.9 looks a bit monstrous! I'm really struggling to come to a decision here!

If any educators who mark students' work using the iPad pro, or anyone who does general annotating, or anyone who can share their experiences with or ideas about these products can give me some insight I'd be very grateful indeed! Thanks :)

Does anyone use Things 3 on their iPad? Is it worth the price?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2018 01:30 AM PDT

I'm checking out some to-do managers and things 3 seems to be quite popular. But giving their hefty prices for iPad, Mac and iPhone, I'm not sure if it's worth it. Have you used it? How has your experience been so far. To me it looks nice but there are other apps that do almost the same. And that new app, Agenda seems pretty close to Things in terms of functionality.

    iPad for University (College)

    Posted: 22 Jul 2018 04:23 AM PDT

Thinking about getting the 9.7 inch iPad with Apple Pencil.

I just have a few questions that I'd really appreciate if someone could help me answer!

    1. Does OneNote work well with PDF integration? Or would something like GoodNotes be better?
    2. How well does Apple Pencil work with the 60Hz refresh rate? Is there a perceptible 'lag'?
    3. How is the real world battery life for the iPad & Apple Pencil with real world usage?

    Thanks guys!

    Need Suggestions For iPad

    Posted: 22 Jul 2018 10:53 AM PDT

I just got iPad Pro 10.5. I'm looking at cases and I'm looking for suggestions! I really like minimal cases, so I was thinking of getting a cheap smart cover and a sleeve. I can't find any smart covers with no cases on Amazon, and I haven't seen a case/sleeve that I really like yet. I really like the leather/black/wood aesthetic. Do you have any suggestions?

    IPad Pro Questions

    Posted: 22 Jul 2018 01:52 PM PDT

I am looking to get an iPad Pro for my note taking this fall for school. The specific one being the 12.9 version. I've been reading rumors that they are set to release a new version this year. Should I wait is it even worth it? I've heard it will be buttonless like the IPhone X. I know when new iOS comes out it slows down the older models. Should I just pull the trigger now or wait and hold off?

I know multi user mode is for education only, is there a way to lock my toddler to certain apps?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2018 10:05 AM PDT

My daughter loves using my iPad, and has plenty of games on there she plays. But, she also likes to find her way to Facebook or Twitter or grand theft auto lol. Since there's no multi user mode, is there an easy way to lock her out of apps when I hand it to her?

Is 2gb RAM really sufficient on an iPad?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2018 11:11 AM PDT

I'm a man with simple needs. Just browsing websites, watching videos and reading books or documents on my iPad. I get a Mini 2 with 1gb of RAM in early 2014. No complaints! I had a Tab 10.1 and Acer Iconia tablet...the Mini 2 was smooth as butter. The whole OS and web browsing experience was slick.

Slowly, as the iOS version numbers increased, the tablet got relatively slower. By 2016 I was experiencing browser tabs reloading frequently, web videos having to be reloaded, and overall smoothness dropping. I got used to it. But with iOS 10 and 11 it's super slow. I know iOS for iPads is light years smoother than for Android tablets, but it's become super frustrating.

My question is simple..when I get the IPad 2018 model, will the 2gb of RAM be sufficient? If yes, for how long really? I wish sometimes I could go back to iOS 6 or 7 on my Mini 2 and enjoy the smoothness that the device had then.

    Apple Pencil: Need for case?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2018 10:18 AM PDT

I recently purchased a 12.9 Pro with an Apple Pencil. Have people found that a case was necessary to protect the Apple Pencil? What cases have people liked using? I expect I will be carrying the iPad and Pencil in a leather messenger bag to/from work/rehearsal every day. Thanks!

Is there a way to use an iPhone to type on an iPad through Bluetooth or WiFi?

    Posted: 21 Jul 2018 04:16 PM PDT

Typing on the iPad onscreen keyboard is painfully slow because it's larger than an iPhone keyboard. Hoping there is an app or setting so that I can type on my iPad using my iPhone.

I've seen others with this issue, and I think it might be an issue with nVidia drivers. Anyone found a fix beyond uninstalling Duet?

iPad vs iPad Pro for artists?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2018 08:32 AM PDT

I'm looking to get an iPad/Pencil combo for digital art.

I have tried looking for reviews that compare the digital art capabilities of the ipad vs the ipad pro, but haven't been very successful - most reviews I've seen are just for the ipad pro. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the ipad and digital art, or if anyone could convince me to shell out for the pro.

I am on a bit of budget, which is why I'm considering the ipad.

Does anyone else’s iPad Pro randomly refresh itself ?

    Posted: 21 Jul 2018 07:28 PM PDT

Hi sorry if this is the wrong sub - just recently my iPad Pro 12.9 (2017 version) has been doing this thing where you'll be busy watching a film or drawing on procreate etc and it'll suddenly revert to the little spinning loading icon and then to the lock screen after a few seconds and it's quite frustrating ! Any fixes ?

    iPad Pro 10.5 Case

    Posted: 21 Jul 2018 09:43 PM PDT

Does anyone have suggestion on a case that is NOT compatible with smart covers? Preferably a slim case. I want one that wraps the iPad around just like a iPhone case would. All the back cover cases on Amazon have the left slide exposed for the smart connector, which I won't be connecting anything to anyway so I want it covered up.

    Thank you!

IPad cannot be opened up for repair?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2018 02:53 AM PDT

My iPad had some internal pressure damage and the stop said they have to replace it, apparently because once assembled you can never open the device up and access the internal electronics anymore. How true is this?

To iPad Air 2 users: hows your performance?

    Posted: 21 Jul 2018 06:59 PM PDT

I bought an Air 2 back in 2015 and it used to be so fast and responsive. All of sudden, iOS 11 introduced a handful of new problems, such as laggy apps, glitching whenever night shift is on, freezing on the lock screen, not rotating, etc. I hope iOS 12 will fix some of these and try to make the iPad Air 2 great again

IPad 9.7 for School? [Finance Major]

    Posted: 21 Jul 2018 03:29 PM PDT

Hey all, I've been looking into an IPad for school, mostly for its note taking with the apple pencil. I recently came across a deal from RBC(Canadian BTW) which is offering the latest IPad for opening a $15/month account for one year minimum and some other requirements.

Which in the end i'd be paying $180 over a year for it.

Just basically wanted an opinion on whether its worth it to get one for a Finance Major and if its a decent deal or maybe find a cheap refurb.

    Thanks in advance!

    Replacement Ipad advice

    Posted: 21 Jul 2018 06:31 PM PDT

Bought a iPad pro 10.5 a few months back and found that it had two dead pixels on it so i exchanged it and apple told me they will send me a replacement unit, i wasn't sure if the replacement unit was brand new or not even though the authorized seller i was talking to said it was. I received my replacement unit and realized that the volume up key was wobbly, my previous iPad volume key did not wobble. Should i contact apple again and tell them the issue and get it replaced again or should i just leave it? I've googled the problem and some people are saying that its common and others are saying that it shouldn't happen. Any advice would be great, feeling like i shouldn't have send my new iPad pro away and should've just ignored the dead pixels. This has left a sour taste in my mouth with apple as I've paid a lot of money for this iPad pro.
