Posted: 23 Jul 2018 12:54 PM PDT I took my 2017 MacBook Pro 13" back to the Apple store yesterday and was told that I would need a new logic board, covered under warranty. My question is, if they are going to replace the logic board and the ram and ssd are soldered onto the board, can I upgrade my ram and ssd and pay the difference? Anyone know if this is possible to do? [link] [comments]

Wait for 2018 MacBook Air Replacement or Buy a 2017 MacBook Pro 13 Inch Non-Touch Bar? Posted: 23 Jul 2018 09:15 PM PDT Basically the title. I have a 13 inch 2012 MacBook Pro (non retina) that I purchased in August of 2012 that is showing its age even though it has had an SSD and 8gb of ram the day I got it. Combine that with it's aging battery (which I have already replaced once and would have to do so another time), I feel like it is not worth pouring in any more money into this 6 year old laptop. So there are rumors that apple will be releasing a replacement for the MacBook Air and updating the MacBook to Intel's 8th generation chips very soon. The report from Ming-Chi Kou, a very reputable Apple leaker, states that apple will be releasing 5 MacBooks this year and as of now 2 have already been released (the new 13 and 15 inch touch bar models). One of the other devices will most likely be the MacBook we have now but with newer processors. There have also been leaks of the European regulatory fillings (ECC) citing 5 new MacBook model numbers. The replacement for the MacBook Air is suppose to be a new budget MacBook. Now my predicament is either to purchase the base 13 inch MacBook Pro with 128gb at a discount or wait until September (rumored reveal date with the 2018 iPhone event) and buy a new MacBook Air 2 or new base pro with the updated processors without a potential discount. The current discount at Best Buy has the 2017 MacBook Pro 13 inch at $1199.99 ($100 off msrp) plus I have a student coupon that will take an additional $150 off making the price $1049.99 plus taxes. I also will be able to sell my current MacBook Pro for around $400-450 dollars which I will put towards the new MacBook. I also will be able use my parents Best Buy credit card and be able to get 12 months no interest financing which will make paying for the MacBook easier for me. I primarily will be using the new MacBook for some light video editing in Final cut, word processing, browsing the internet, watching videos, and for all of my university work. I also will be taking the MacBook to campus everyday so portability is an important factor. The 13 inch pro model, while not being as light as the MacBook, will still be much lighter and smaller then my current 2012 13 inch MBP. I also plan on keeping this computer for 5 or more years just as I have with my current MacBook Pro. This is why I don't think it will be worth the money to purchase the 2017/2018 MacBook with the 7th or 8th gen M3 processors since the difference in power is definitely worth the small sacrifice in portability. My main reason on why I have not purchased a new MacBook is due to the upgrade from the 7th gen processors to the newer 8th gen processors. The performance gap between the two generations is substantial enough, especially in multi-threaded is based on benchmark scores I've seen is enough to give me pause. But with the $250 discount I can get right now I am not sure what to do. My budget is between $1000-$1200 so the new 13 inch MacBook Pro with the touch bar is out of my budget. I also plan on keeping this laptop for a while so going with the 7th generation processors means I am already going to have a computer that is already a year old in terms of specs. My student discount ($150 off) with Best Buy is due to expire on August 4th and I am not sure how much longer they will have their $100 sale discount, so I need to make a decision rather quickly. So, should I wait for the new MacBook Air replacement or go ahead and purchase the 2017 MacBook Pro 13 inch non touch bar at a discount? Any input is appreciated, thank you in advance! Impossible to disable SIP on 2018 Macbook Pro Posted: 23 Jul 2018 03:50 PM PDT Trying out this new machine - I need to turn off SIP to override the color settings on my monitors. Turns out, when you boot into recovery, you can't open the terminal. A dialog opens: "Recovery is trying to change system settings. No administrator was found." The recovery session is then completely hosed (no windows visible, can't close Terminal.app) and you need to reboot and try again. Since you can't turn off SIP in single-user mode, you're screwed. The same error pops up when opening the Startup Security Utility. The issue seems related to https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/caution-unable-to-reinstall-macos-on-2018-mbp.2127564/. Looks like the T2 chip broke some recovery partition functionality and nobody at Apple bothered to try it out before shipping the machine. [link] [comments]

MacBook Air not charging when plugged in Posted: 23 Jul 2018 04:18 AM PDT My MacBook Air is no longer connecting to the Apple Official chargers (tried 2 different chargers as well as different outlets). When the magnetic charging sources connect, the power adapter does not light up at all. I tried cleaning out area around the magnet but have had zero success. Computer is working fine otherwise. Which would be the best option in my case... Posted: 23 Jul 2018 12:34 AM PDT I currently have a 2011 mbp with 8gb of ram lol. I'm debating upgrading to a 2018 13 inch macbook pro with the 2.7ghz i7 and 16gb of ram or a 2018 15 inch base model. I'm using it for logic, final cut, ableton, and I'm a comp sci major.
