A little appreciation for the A9 chip

    Posted: 20 Jun 2018 08:51 PM PDT

I always love a small form factor phones like the old 4S, or SE. been using the SE For a year but had the urge to switch to the iPhone X. Bought it a month ago, even though the screen is great and the gestures are amazing, today I just switched back to the SE and boy, it feels good to be back using this compact phone.

Even though the A9 is 2 generation behind, and on the paper it would be a great downgrade in terms of performance, but the SE with the latest iOS 11.4 is fast! and I don't miss the speed of the X at all, actually I feel its speed is pretty much the same. I don't game on my phone though.

Now I'm excited about iOS 12 because I heard only good things about it especially for older devices like my SE.

Going to sleep in my cryo chamber now. Good night!

Update: I gave the old 64GB SE to my sister after I bought the X. Sold the X and bought a brand new SE.

I freaking love the silence switch.

    Posted: 21 Jun 2018 02:07 AM PDT

I had a lot of phones, not just only iPhones.
But back when I had an Android, the thing I missed the most was the silence switch.

Being able to silence my phone by the flip of a switch at anytime, during a meeting for instance, is priceless to me.
No need to unlock anything, to type passwords, to lay my finger on the fingerprint scanner, to show my face, yada yada...
    Just tik and that's it.

I hope they'll keep it in their future phones.

TvOS beta 2 allows setting HomePod as a permanent audio out

    Posted: 20 Jun 2018 11:26 AM PDT

It's found in video and audio settings. Asking Siri something or turning the tv off does not lose the connection either.

Since the HomePod isn't updated, doing this will break music playback via Siri on the HomePod.

Why I’ve decided to stick with Apple..

    Posted: 20 Jun 2018 12:14 PM PDT

This isn't a fanboy post, rather a very appreciative one on a positive note... I've recently shifted completely to Apple ecosystem.

Come to think of it, Apple has always thought ahead of the time. They've always come up with ideologies which might not stand out today, but are going to be the centre of attention in the coming decade.

    Let's take some examples here,

    PRIVACY

The whole issue of user privacy didn't pickup enough steam up until 2014s.. but Apple has been emphasising on it ever since 2012-era.. like with introduction of TouchID they explained how the Secure-Enclave keeps all the sensitive data on-device and separate, secure.

    OS UPDATES SUPPORT

Even the 3GS launched all the way back in 2009 received 2012's iOS update (iOS 6). That's 3 full OS-cycle support. A number which Android unfortunately still cannot reach today. Most of their phones except the now Pixel have less than 2 years of support. Worse in case of monthly security updates.

Now the 5S from 2013 is going to run 2018's software receiving constant updates and improvements all the way through mid-2019. That's 6 full-years of support. INSANE.

    BUILD QUALITY

Apple's products always have been a marvel to look at. Their design quality is nothing short of industry leading although it did take a bit of a nosedive with iPhone 6 (2014).

Even in 2010 Apple focused big on iPhone 4's glass and aluminium design. Back then almost all other phones were made of cheap plastic or polycarbonate.

Now every OEM focuses big on design.

    CONSISTENCY

App-Store has a spectacular collection of apps... consistent apps, design wise.

iPhones, iPads and Macs are brilliantly well connected to each other. Using them together is seamless.

Meanwhile the competition still hasn't been able to implement their design language properly even after almost half a decade... there's no nearly as better option of an option as the iPad in Tablets.

Apple has a strong, dominant presence in all the 3 industries: Phones, Tablets and Computers. No other player in the industry has a strong, consistent presence in all 3 of these categories at the same time.

These are some very essential fundamentals that Apple gets right.

Inconsistencies within Messages app between macOS and iOS

    Posted: 20 Jun 2018 12:56 PM PDT

Over the years, iOS has had some small bugs that weren't fixed until years later, with the most recent example being how iOS's own scrolling became choppy in Safari in iOS 7's redesign. This wasn't fixed until iOS 11 after Google had submitted a bug report with WebKit. Another example of this is an issue with embedded content within the Messages app.

To highlight the bug in a relevant context, first look at the Messages app on macOS, which currently works as intended. When someone sends an image/video via the Messages app, you see an embedded preview, being encased from edge to edge, with rounded corners to align with the rounded aesthetic of Apple's guidelines of UI/UX design. However, on iOS, this isn't exactly the case.

If an image/video is narrow, whether horizontally or vertically, the embedded view is cropped, leaving out a lot of content you would otherwise be able to see. As someone who uses the Messages app across both macOS and iOS and sends screenshots frequently, it can be quite cumbersome to have to view each narrow image in fullscreen on iOS when macOS can display it in a full, uncropped view. Do you guys think this is something Apple should fix, or is there a reason it works this way?

Edit: for a visual comparison, here's a shared image in the Messages app on macOS, and here's the same shared image in the Messages app on iOS.

Is it just me, or is the WiFi signal strength indicator useless?

    Posted: 20 Jun 2018 10:16 AM PDT

The WiFi symbol on the iPhone, iPad, and Mac all seem to be pretty much useless. If I ever see only two of the three waves lit up, it never practically means "low connection" but always "no connection."

For example, when I leave my house and am starting up the navigation in my car from my phone it rarely loads. The phone is still connected to the house WiFi, but no actual data is sent. I either have to drive away, or turn off WiFi.

Am I interpreting the WiFi symbol wrong, or is it just inaccurate?

How do you manage the battery life?

    Posted: 20 Jun 2018 07:52 PM PDT

So I'm a android user who is willing to give the Iphone 7 a go for a couple of months.

One thing that I realised is that the battery life on an Iphone 7 is considerably worse than my galaxy s6.

According to some websites, the Iphone 7 averages around 12 hours of life.

    How do you manage this?

About the rumoured 6.1 inch iPhone...

    Posted: 20 Jun 2018 06:20 PM PDT

According to leaks and rumours, there's gonna be a 6.1 inch iPhone at a budget pricing.

    • 6.1 inch: LCD, $600+, single lens setup

•5.8 inch: OLED, $999, dual lens setup

I'm really attracted by bigger screen and the price point. I'm fine with LCD but the deal-breaker for me is the single lens setup.

I can see how the 6.1 inch if it's true, is going to popular because of the pricing. What do you guys think? Would you get it?

    EDIT: Format

EDM- download any file anywhere on iOS with share sheet extension

    Posted: 20 Jun 2018 08:28 PM PDT

Built for safari and chrome on iOS, also works in other apps. Activate the share sheet, then this will show everything that can be downloaded on the page intelligently.

I was using iCab to download things from the web, but that was a whole new browser. I prefer safari, so having this available in safari is far more useful.

This app is also a file container that exists in the "on my ipad" section of files.app. You can also use the app to unarchive zip, rar, and 7z, so i was able to kill my other app iZip as well.

Apple Watch loses connection to iPhone X only when connected to car’s Bluetooth

    Posted: 20 Jun 2018 03:57 PM PDT

I have a 2010 Ford Flex with Sync. iPhone X 11.4 and Apple Watch series 2 with OS 4.3.1

My Apple Watch will state it is disconnected from my X while my X states it is still connected . The only time it does this is when my X is connected to my car's Bluetooth. Regardless of whether I am talking or just listening to music.

I hard restarted my X. I restarted my watch. And repaired my car under settings. I reset my watch and restored through an icloud backup. After the issue continued I reset and did not restore. I configured my watch as new. I have reset and restored my X through a backup. i really hoping to not have to wipe my phone clean and not restore through a back up.

I searched and and did not find this issue specifically relating to a watch dropping when connecting to a cars bluetooth. Any ideas?

    Recommendations for a music player!

    Posted: 20 Jun 2018 11:18 PM PDT

Context: I routinely travel to bad areas to skateboard and don't like taking my X due to the possibility of it being stolen or dropped. However, I also want to listen to music with my earbuds.

Result: I want a music player that isn't as expensive as a new iPhone. (I wish there were iPods that could utilize Apple Music streaming)

What would be my best bet in terms of Apple products to deal with this niche?
