Apple Confirms Mojave is the Last macOS Release to Support 32-Bit Apps

Apple Maps now re-routes with the best route.

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 04:40 PM PDT

I was using Apple Maps to get from Boulder, CO to Longmont, CO and the commute time was 32 minutes. Siri found me a better route and cut my travel time to 20 minutes. Down a whole 12 minutes is impressive!

Edit: this was during 5 o clock traffic mind you! edit 2: I see lots of confusion.

This all happened automatically, without any prompts or anything of the like.

With Siri Shortcuts Apple pulled of a god damn mastermind trick

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 10:49 AM PDT

I am seriously impressed with the upcoming Siri shortcuts. Apple found a way to keep its privacy promises and make Siri smarter by the minute. Hear me out:

With Apple being the only big smart assistant competitor not using excessive amounts of personal data Siri was left to be the most incompetent assistant. No doubt.

Apples privacy stance is amazing compared to google and Alexa.

Now with shortcuts Apple will be able to pull crazy amounts of data from user queries and what they actually want to achieve with that specific command. All while Apple won't need to care about what individual asked the question.

Now imagine all the queries get analyzed. If enough people use similar commands to do the similar task Siri will be able to understand what a user with a random but similar question wants it to do.

Siri will get smarter by the day and I take my hat because Apple managed to crowd source it's users all while keeping their privacy private.

iOS 12 screentime will definitely create akward situations.

    Posted: 06 Jun 2018 12:48 AM PDT

As seen here, screentime displays some websites in its list. It'll be fun when you show to your friends how you spend time on your phone and pornhub and similar appear with dozens of hours.

iOS 12 introduces Face ID scan trigger: if scan failed, swipe up to trigger again

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 08:37 AM PDT

If Face ID failed to recognize you when tapping the screen or picking up your iPhone X, it's now easier to trigger a face scan: just swipe up.

Apple stops offering watchOS 5 beta 1 due to ‘an issue that occurs while updating’

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 05:42 PM PDT

If you want to use iOS 12 Beta 1 as a daily driver...

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 04:30 PM PDT

If you're on the edge about trying iOS 12 early, here's my experience...

So far so good for me. I'm using the beta on the iPhone X and it runs fine. I noticed it can get super hot under heavy CPU load and apps will sometimes crash or bug out. I find a simple reopen of the app fixes it...

iCloud storage upload doesn't work for me and some apps may struggling connecting to their respective servers.

All the basics work fine like iMessage, phone, email, camera, YouTube and social media.

Overall I think it's super usable. Just remember that downgrading to iOS 11 means you'll lose your data!

iOS 12 introduces rich-content (+fully scrollable) notification previews

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 06:29 AM PDT

Just thought I'd point this out as I hadn't seen anyone else talk about it yet.

In iOS 11 notifications from the stock Mail app contained only non-formatted text, and as a result you couldn't effectively preview emails containing rich content such as images. In the current iOS 12 developer beta, this has changed; notifications now show the complete email content. And perhaps even more usefully you can now view the email in its entirety, as the notification is now scrollable.

Been using siri shortcuts for a day. I'm a believer.

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 06:43 PM PDT

You can add additional context if siri doesn't already have it.

For example, you can add "call mom" if siri doesn't handle that context. No need to wait on apple. I like this, since it gives me much more control than I had before.

Extensibility and possibility to be compatible with other services.

I have the sound hound app on my phone. Siri suggested the identify music shortcut for it, which surprised me.

Now I'm able to use another music identification service other than the default to Identify music.

"hound, what's this song?" Will trigger the app to start listening upon opening. With apps being able to integrate with the siri UI, you won't even have to open the app, which is better.

Also, you can make limited siri shortcuts with the workflow app.

    No unwanted screenshots iPhone X

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 06:31 AM PDT

In iOS12 you can't accidentally make screenshots anymore with your iPhone X by picking it up. It only works after the display has been on for a short while👌🏻

Garosugil Apple store claps to customers if someone buys something expensive

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 05:10 PM PDT

Yesterday I went to Apple Store garosugil(only apple store in South korea) because I needed a new case for my iPhone. While they didn't clap me for the purchase of my iPhone case(because it does not exceed $500), I saw someone buying a Macbook Pro, and the employees said "[name] is together with his new Macbook Pro starting today! Lets congratulate everyone!", then the employees clapped for him.

I don't know the reason for this, but it seems that in this apple store, clapping is a must for employees. Weird

iOS developer beta on iPhone 6S

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 10:48 AM PDT

I've downloaded iOS12 developer beta on my daily driver and wanted to share my experience here.

First impression: Oh my that buttery smoothness with the scrolling! Shake to undo on typing detects faster, widgets loads faster, universal search fetches faster, it's not only snappier it's really smooth like good avocado spread!

Only one problem so far, the wallpaper lost the grey tint over it, making the app/folder titles hard to read.

Okay it's 2 AM over here I should get some sleep, will update with y'all tomorrow when I get to mess with the update.

iOS 12: keyboard cursor mode on non-3D Touch devices, + possibly improvements to 3D Touch input recognition

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 04:29 PM PDT

With 3D Touch, users can press on their keyboard to enter a text cursor mode which would allow them to easily and quickly move through and select text in a text field. However until now this wasn't available on devices without 3D Touch (iPads aside, where the mode is activated by swiping on the keyboard with two fingers).

iOS 12 has introduced the ability for these devices to access cursor mode. To do so, press and hold on the space bar; once the button characters disappear you are in cursor mode. You can lift off the screen and cursor mode will remain active for a short time, allowing you to quickly scroll through large amounts of text easily.

Improvements also seem to have been made to the 3D Touch input management for this feature. Previously on iOS 11, if you attempted to use 3D Touch immediately after typing something the keyboard would often become confused and fail to recognise the 3D Touch input (interpreting it as normal touch interaction instead), requiring the user to lessen their input pressure and reapply it. So far in the beta this seems to have been remedied, and I haven't noticed the issue pop up a single time (anyone else had different experiences?)

New App Store guidelines: Apps will now be forced to clearly describe new features in update notes

    Posted: 04 Jun 2018 09:43 PM PDT

2.3.12: Apps must clearly describe new features and product changes in their "What's New" text. Simple bug fixes, security updates, and performance improvements may rely on a generic description, but more significant changes must be listed in the notes.
