I’ve been using an iPhone X without a case for over 6 months. Here is what it looks like. Posted: 25 May 2018 06:50 AM PDT So briefly about my usage: I used the X as a main device, so everyday for everything like calls internet, chats etc. I sometimes carry another phone with me as a backup or for whatever reason but since I got the X it has been pretty much the only phone I used. I drive a lot (at least 2-3 trips a day) and work in an office, I also go to the gym almost every day. (I have a bumper case for the gym but I've only used it for the first few months and don't anymore) I use my phone in all those situations for music/navigation etc. I rarely have any battery left at the end of the day so I'm a heavy user you might say. I try to be careful with my phones: I'll never put it in a pocket with something else for example etc. but I do occasionally drop them (my 4 had a cracked screen and so did the 5s). I dropped the X a few times and remarkably only one of them had left a mark (two) on the side. I'd say I'm a 3,5/5 for being careful with my phone overall. (1 being playing football with it, 5 being handling it with velvet gloves on). So here are the results of my usage without the case: The iPhone X under direct sunlight (more more scratchy details) The iPhone X indoor pictures (how it normally looks like) As you can see the results are pretty remarkable. The X is very durable to scratches compared to the other smartphones I've used before (and I've used a lot of them) and it's actually quite shatter resistant from my experience also. Did you know that the glass on the iPhone X is 1.5 times thicker than on previous models? The stainless steel frame also holds against scratches or scuffs very well(huge problem on previous aluminum iPhones) although this is only true for the space grey version, I'm not sure why. I've never liked using a case for the phone. I get all the advantages but I feel like you aren't using the true advantages of design and feel. To me it feels like buying a really pretty car and wrapping it in ugly plastic so that it doesn't get scuffed or scratched. I like my phone to feel premium, slim and light. So I've never used a case, and mostly it was always fine. (7s is an exception because that jet black is ridiculous, it even got badly scratched with the case smh) The point of this isn't to convince people to not wear cases, but if you were wondering what it could be like, you have your answer. I found a new bug on the iPhone X. Posted: 25 May 2018 07:25 AM PDT So apparently if you are FaceTiming someone and you open snapchat and close it before it fully loads. You just ruined FaceTime. The picture for the other person freezes and yours does not load every again. You are also unable to end the call. The only way to end it is if the other person ends it. But... your phone won't take the call away. It gets stuck on "call ending" and you have the green thing on the top left corner. Since it's stuck like this, you cannot receive calls or make any, the only way to fix it is a reboot. [link] [comments]

Is there a way to make phone sounds NOT go through bluetooth? Posted: 25 May 2018 08:14 AM PDT I've got my phone paired with my car. Making/receiving calls works perfectly. The problem is that the normal phone sounds (e.g. new mail notification, text notification, voice guidance from navigation, etc) all disappear when I turn on the car. If I put the car into "Bluetooth input" mode, I can hear those sounds, but of course that disables the radio. So currently if I want to hear the phone navigation voice I either have to turn off bluetooth (but then I also lose calling features through the phone), or switch to "bluetooth input" mode and sit in silence for the whole trip. So ideally I'd love if the sounds from the phone played through the car speakers and interrupted my normal audio when they played. (the built in navigation in the car does this already). I'm not optimistic about this. My second preference would be for all the normal phone sounds to stay in the phone (my old 2007 car worked this way, there was no "Bluetooth input" mode, all all phone sounds stayed in the phone), but just the calling features go through the car. Is this possible? FYI: Car is a 2018 Chrysler Pacifica [link] [comments]

"Remind me to call Smith" [Rant] Posted: 25 May 2018 06:30 AM PDT [TL;DR: Siri makes silly mistake, nothing bad happens, I'm still mad. Bear with me.] After a few weeks of not even remembering what long-pressing the home button did, I thought, "hey, there's one thing she does well, I ask her to remind me to call someone, and later a notification appears with a 'Call' button right there." Can't do that from the Reminders app. "Which Smith?", Siri asks, confused I even acknowledged her existence. She gives me two options, either I meant Joe Smith (fictitious name), my best friend who I talk to short of on an everyday basis and whose contact I have marked as a favorite or, more likely, Mark Smith - Joe's father - whom I can't remember if it was two or three years ago that I last talked to about some work, but I do remember being on Android back then (shameful I must admit, to have missed the very early years of the wonderful assistant we have today). But Siri knows better. See, she is an AI - as in, artificial intelligence. I call my friend several times a week, but I seem to never have called his father, so obviously being able to connect and share some stories at 7 in the morning on a random Friday would be the best course of action to take from a human point of view, so it makes sense that he's not just given as an option, but listed first. I digress though, that's just a simple mistake. I respond to her, "Joe," I say. "Calling Joe Smith..." "Wait, what?" She then turns the screen into the phone-call UI, my friend's photo as the background, and with the hangup button disabled for what seems like an eternity, though I manage to tap it a few seconds after it was enabled. "Maybe I did something wrong" was my first thought. "Maybe I should try again." So again I summon her: "Remind me to call Smith." I briefly thought about saying "Joe" instead of "Smith", but then I thought she may call Joe Weisberger, my teacher from 7 years ago whose number I still have because I'm lazy, so I decided to cut my losses (Joe Smith's real name is a mouthful). Sure enough, when I confirm to her that I meant Joe and not his father, whom Joe himself doesn't even talk to that much, she does the same thing. To add salt to injury, I notice that she's calling via audio FaceTime, which I believe means that even if I hangup immediately the call still comes through on the other end, if for a few seconds. Bears mentioning that I never use this technology to call anyone, ever. Now, I thought if I ever posted here about Siri, it was going to be about that time when, with a group of friends, we decided to create a contact named "a whore" and associate it with a friend as his mother, so when I asked Siri to "call the son of a whore," of course, she actually calls my own home number. And, in case we didn't notice, she says my full name out loud for everyone to hear. I guess that's karma for me. But no, I'm posting this because, even though this was a silly mistake with nothing really bad actually happening at all, this made me put everything I was doing aside and write this. Seriously, what is even the point. It's not about the mistake itself, that would be bonkers, it's about failing to meet the lowest expectations of user experience. It's like getting an old, used car that can't manage to get to 70 MPH and after a few days, the speedometer stops working (obviously talking about Siri and not the iPhone as a whole, as that would be a nice car with iOS 11 for a speedometer). A few months ago, she sometimes didn't even know how to pronounce dates correctly in my language - which is Spanish, pretty huge market for Apple if my sources are to be believed. And I'm not talking the reverse order or something understandable like that, I mean actually saying "twenty-eight, forward-slash, five, forward-slash, two-thousand and eighteen" instead of "28 of May" or just "Monday." In Spanish, we call the letter Y the "Greek 'I'" (spoiler alert: we don't pronounce it like that, that's just the name). So of course, if my friend of Chinese origin has a name that begins with such a letter, Siri will conform to the standards of my language and pronounce his name as "Greek I-ang", no matter how many times I tell her otherwise. She knows better. I can't even pull that "yell 'Hey Siri' to stop the alarm" trick since my phone doesn't support "Hey Siri" while it's not charging, she just won't listen to me. We don't even have Wolfram-Alpha in Spanish, so the most "hilarious" of mistakes are lost on us, we just get to "browse the Web". At this point, Siri is just a glorified timer, a poor man's waifu at best. Is data collection really such an important part of this, that an almost trillion-dollar company can't pull it off - can't even get it off the ground - without leeching off users' most precious life details? If that's the case, I guess this state of affairs is what I rather stick with. But one thing I know, I'm not using Siri again. I don't want to keep being let down. Sorry for the long rant, I got carried away. [link] [comments]

Best reliable third-party place to buy a refurbished 6s? Posted: 25 May 2018 08:30 AM PDT Hi, I've had my 5c for over four years, my replacement screen is fucked, I need more space, etc. I know you can get refurbished phones on amazon and ebay (my mom just got an SE on Amazon), but I also know that fakes are out there and it's a gamble. Do you guys know any specific sellers or other websites that you'd recommend? I can't afford to get one new, but I know I can get a refurbished or used one if I look in the right places/make sure it all checks out first. [link] [comments]

Posted: 25 May 2018 07:57 AM PDT I'm on my 3rd iPhone now (7) and am going to upgrade to X to use the discount off the monthly payments. I have 2 older models of iPhones that are in good cosmetic and working condition. Where would I get the best Trade In Value for the older phones? Verizon, Apple or another source? TIA!
