Some personal experiences with both the 2018 iPad and the 10.5-inch iPad Pro

    Posted: 08 May 2018 06:39 PM PDT

I see a decent number of posts asking about the differences. As someone who owned both, I thought I'd share my personal experience, with a focus on some of the most frequently asked questions I see in this subreddit.

    • Laminated Display: iPad Pros have laminated displays, which means the glass is glued to the LCD. This eliminates the air gap between the glass and the display. To be honest, I could barely tell the difference with the two devices side by side, and I want to think I'm pretty particular about such things. It does have two implications for using the Apple Pencil:

      • With the 2018 iPad, you're basically writing a tiny little bit away from where the "ink" appears. This video nicely illustrates the effect, albeit in a somewhat exaggerated way (https://youtu.be/-WmBRTu9dsg?t=2m5s). In practice, I don't notice the difference.
      • Apple Pencil makes a much louder noise when hitting the 2018 iPad display. I actually do find this noticeable, since I work in a very quiet room. I would try hitting your iPhone display with your nail and see how much it bothers you (the 2018 iPad with Pencil noise is a little less severe than that.)
    • ProMotion: iPad Pros have ProMotion displays, with up to 120Hz refresh rates. This is a HUGE improvement for me. Scrolling on the iPad Pro is unbelievably smooth. I watched some videos about this feature, then experienced it in person, and realized that no video can do this feature justice! You HAVE TO experience this yourself to believe it. Now, if you've never used a ProMotion display, you'll never know what you're missing out and it's ok! Since no one is complaining about scrolling on their iPhones, the 2018 iPad experience is good enough. The 120Hz refresh rate does make the Apple Pencil more responsive; if you look at slomo videos on Youtube, you can see the difference. In practice, I feel the differences are difficult to perceive.

    • Anti-Reflective Coating: iPad Pros display have very low reflectivity, while the 2018 iPads don't have the same anti-reflective coating. This can be a big deal if you use your iPad in an outdoor setting. I'm able to use my iPad Pro very comfortably on a sunny day in the park, but the 2018 iPad would be too reflective.

    • True Tone: iPad Pro displays support TrueTone and pick up the ambient lighting conditions. I personally love it; my room is usually lit with an incandescent light and the iPad Pro display gives a very warm look, making it more comfortable and natural to read. The 2018 iPad looks much colder by comparison, even when night shift is turned on. Not a deal breaker, just nicer with the iPad Pro.

    • Other Display Differences: iPads Pros displays are brighter (600 nits), which also helps in outdoor environments. Since I rarely use my iPads at max brightness, this is not a huge benefit to me. iPad Pros displays also support wide color gamut. I am pretty color sensitive, so when the two devices are placed side by side, the differences are stark to me. However, if I'm not looking at them side-by-side, I won't know the difference.

    • Processing Speed: I'll skip quoting boring specs, but iPad Pros obviously have better processors. However, both are super fast and in daily use, I don't feel one is faster than the other at all.

    • Apple Pencil: As discussed above, I personally do not perceive any differences. The writing experiences are superb on both devices. This shouldn't be surprising, as everyone praised the Apple Pencil on the first gen iPad Pros.

    • RAM: iPad Pros have 4GB of RAM, vs 2GB in the 2018 iPad. Personally, I have not run into any issues with either, but this guy (https://youtu.be/-WmBRTu9dsg?t=3m50s) managed to crash the 2018 iPad using Procreate; the iPad Pro handled the task perfectly. So if you work with large images and videos, you need more RAM! This is actually a factor worth seriously thinking about, if you want to be future proof. I feel the processors on both models are powerful enough for the next few years, but RAM may increasingly become a limiting factor – as iOS and its apps become larger and more powerful, they'll naturally consumer more RAM in the future.

    • Form Factor/Size/Weight: iPad Pro 10.5 is a little bigger, but actually weighs the same as the 2018 iPad because it has thinner bezels and is thinner. When you pick up both devices, the thinness of the 10.5-inch iPad Pro is immediately noticeable. The thin bezel of the iPad Pro 10.5 makes it slightly more modern looking; I also love its diamond cut chamfered edges. But the 2018 iPad looks just fine. (I recently found my old iPad 2 in a closet – now that's a dated look...)

    • Camera: iPad Pros basically has the same camera system as iPhone 7, which is pretty awesome. 2018 iPads have pretty poor quality cameras by comparison, but I don't know how many people actually use their iPads for taking pictures... So this shouldn't be a big deal.

    • Speakers: iPad Pros have four speakers, versus only two in the 2018 iPads. This makes a HUGE difference. For one thing, the iPad Pro speakers are very loud – I can feel my table vibrating when my iPad Pro is playing music at top volume. Further, you can hold an iPad Pro in any orientation and it sounds amazing. I watch TV in bed a lot and I'd hold my iPad on my chest. If I'm using the 2018 iPad, I have to make sure the speakers don't land on my chest. With the iPad Pro, it really doesn't matter how I hold it.

So which one should you get? The iPad Pro is better in every possible way, but all the extra features are all "nice-to-haves." If you're on a budget, the 2018 iPad experience is more than sufficient; everything else is just gravy. I personally kept the 10.5-inch iPad Pro because MicroCenter was selling them for a nice discount and I absolutely love it. But I don't think I would've regretted too much, had I kept the 2018 one. Hope this helps =)

    iPad Pro 10.5" 64GB or 256GB?

    Posted: 09 May 2018 05:38 AM PDT

Hello, I'm sure this has been asked a bit and I'm sorry if it has.

I'm looking to get an iPad Pro today and am wondering if I can get away with just the 64GB rather than shed out an extra £150 for the 256GB.

I'm a casual digital artist at home and would like to use the iPad when on the daily work commute. My trusty old work Bamboo died today too so I'd probably need to transfer work from my PC to the iPad every now and then. I wouldn't use the iPad for anything more than ProCreate art and maybe download Youtube for the odd bit of larger screen watching. I won't store videos and music on the device as I have my phone for that.

Do you guys think I can get by with just the 64GB? How easy is it to move ProCreate/PSD/JPEG files over from the iPad to my desktop PC and vice versa?

    Messenger/canvas bag

    Posted: 09 May 2018 09:36 AM PDT

Hi. I'm looking for a messenger bag like this. I want bags only on Amazon and below $25. I know it's a little cheap but I'm using a spare gift card. The iPad I'll be using is the 6th generation. Thanks.

    Best note taking/PDF app?

    Posted: 09 May 2018 08:16 AM PDT

I've been searching for a few days now and reading a bunch of reddit threads, tomsolid.com, 9to5mac, etc. but haven't found too clear of an answer yet. I would like to go as paperless as possible with my ipad pro/pencil but I'm not sure of the best way to do it.

    Features I would like include:

    • Being able to download a pdf or .doc from email, edit it in app, and send back
    • Being able to insert a pdf/ppt/.doc/etc. into the program (not as an attachment like evernote does) and annotate it there.
    • Ideally sync with macOS and Windows if possible (not a dealbreaker here)
    • Discrete pages (counter to onenote which has infinite left and right scroll).
    • Add on some other features that most of these apps already have (multiple pens, colors, etc.)

Is there any app that's particularly good at these? Between Notability, GoodNotes, Noteshelf 2, Nebo, Onenote, etc. I'm having a tough time deciding.

Upgrade iPad Mini (1st Gen) to iPad 6th Gen?

    Posted: 08 May 2018 04:45 PM PDT

Hello fellow Redditors! I'm on a dilemma whether I should get the new iPad 6th Gen which goes for $329 and add $99 for the Pencil as an upgrade for my current iPad Mini. I first bought my iPad Mini 1st gen back in 2012 (a little while after it released) as a device for casual browsing, watch/stream videos, reading some manga, reading lecture notes (using Adobe Reader or Keynote) and taking notes using OneNote. My iPad Mini still does hold up until today and I can still go through an entire typical day at uni (6-7 hrs) with around 20-25% battery to spare from fully charged. The only gripe I have is the iOS version capped at 9.3.5 and most apps on the App Store now requires a minimum of iOS 10 or 11, which kind of sucks (but I understand why). So should I jump on the wagon for the new 6th gen iPad with iPad pencil? Is the total cost worth it for what I'm doing (a heavy note taker, casual video streaming/watching and casual browsing)? I'm looking at around $428 without taxes yet. Thank you!

iPad Pro 9.7 vs iPad Pro 10.5 - Is there a noticeable difference in terms of portability?

    Posted: 08 May 2018 09:30 PM PDT

Just looking for some experiences and thoughts on the portability of these two iPad Pros.

I am really in love with the thinness and weight of the iPad Pro 9.7. My dad has one.

The 10.5 is definitely the much better iPad, even though it has slightly larger dimensions and weight.

Has anyone noticed any significant advantages in terms of portability in real-world usage?

I know the differences are going to be minute, but anyone who has owned both iPads, please feel free to share your thoughts and experiences.

Is there a way to download movies and TV shows onto my iPad so I can watch them when I don't have internet access?(nothing illegal though please)

    Posted: 08 May 2018 04:37 PM PDT

I went camping this weekend and I was going to bring my iPad but then I realized I wouldn't have any internet access at the campground so I wouldn't be able to do much with it.

Ipad pro 12.9 screen friction is high, pencil squeeks

    Posted: 08 May 2018 06:47 PM PDT

I just got a refurbished ipad pro 12.9 and have been enjoing the pencil but parts of the screen are much less slick than others giving a very inconsistent drawing experience. Sometimes the pencil will even squeek against the glass. Has anyone dealt with this issue?

Does anyone else find their letter keys wearing off on the Smart Keyboard?

    Posted: 08 May 2018 02:31 PM PDT

I'm on my second keyboard, because the first had the disconnect issue. Even on the first, the key letters wore off. Now on the replacement, three to four of them are wearing off again.

Is it just the way I type?

Charging the iPad while using Duet Display?

    Posted: 08 May 2018 11:09 PM PDT

Hi there, I'm annoyed that my iPad Pro does not charge at my work PC when I use it as a third monitor (using duet Display). Yes, yes, I know this is a first world problem i know... The problem is, that the tower pc I'm using isn't providing enough power to charge the iPad while using it as a display.

But I would like to know whether here is a solution to use the lightning port charge the ipad during use with a normal plug. Is there some kind of an lightning Y-Adapter ? Thanks for your suggestions!

I know there are a lot of "Help me choose an iPad" posts, but none align with my needs. So, I will do my own. Help Me Choose an iPad.

    Posted: 08 May 2018 09:50 PM PDT

I've been looking at iPads for a couple of weeks now. I just can't decide which model to choose. I really want this iPad to be an extension of my at-home Mac. For my needs, I plan to jot a few notes, lightly type documents, heavy movie-watching and television-watching, social media, reading, and browsing the web.

There are already a few things I've decided on: must have enough storage (32 GB and 64 GB won't suffice), must have a good screen, speakers don't matter to me, must be portable (this one is blatant—come on, it's an iPad). I honestly plan to have this iPad for at least two years, then I'll upgrade to the newest "X" iPad.

The models I'm considering are: 2018 iPad, iPad Pro 9.7", and iPad Pro 10.5". However, I am more reluctant on the 10.5" model because of the price. Oh, also, I will buy this iPad most likely in September (when college begins). I do have concerns for each model too:

    • 2018 iPad: the air gap and the display's quality worries me.
    • iPad Pro 9.7": the processor speed worries me (I know for sure that I'll upgrade to iOS 12. Right now, I have a 6s, and I am starting to notice the slow-down in iOS).
    • iPad Pro 10.5": the price worries me. Is this iPad worth the cost, if I'm going to upgrade within three years?

I hope you guys can help me. Thanks!

Update: Another reason of why I'm reluctant on buying the 10.5" iPad is because I already have a Mac at home. So, I wouldn't necessarily need to go all-out because of the dedicated computer at home?

Can someone please give me a straight answer for screen recording with in-app audio?

    Posted: 08 May 2018 07:50 PM PDT

I have physical proof that I could at one point, roughly 2 weeks ago, use screen recording on my iPad and it would record in-app audio. Now when I try it I am not getting any audio from it. I have spent several hours scouring the internet for an answer to this and keep coming up with the same non-answer:

"Long-press the screen record button and select microphone audio."

But here's the thing, I don't want microphone audio. That just sounds terrible when I'm trying to record in-app audio and not all of the ambient noise in my house. This is especially impossible if I have headphones in while I'm recording.

PLEASE someone give me an answer that explains why I am incapable of doing something that I have done before without any effort.
