Messages in iCloud is E2E encrypted, but Apple may still have access

    Posted: 30 May 2018 12:30 PM PDT

Apple recently updated their iCloud security overview article to clarify how Messages in iCloud encryption works. Here's the excerpt:

Messages in iCloud also uses end-to-end encryption. If you have iCloud Backup turned on, a copy of the key protecting your Messages is included in your backup. This ensures you can recover your Messages if you've lost access to iCloud Keychain and your trusted devices. When you turn off iCloud Backup, a new key is generated on your device to protect future messages and it is not stored by Apple.

Essentially, all your messages are encrypted by a key generated using your device's passcode and are inaccessible to Apple and third parties. BUT, if iCloud Backup is turned on, that key is included in the backup and can be accessed by Apple if served a warrant by law enforcement. It also appears that a copy of the key is stored in iCloud Keychain, which itself is secured by your device's passcode. To keep your message history unreadable to anyone but you, iCloud Backup must be disabled.

With Messages in iCloud disabed, all your messages are included in iCloud backups, so this is at least a bit more secure than that.

TL;DR: Messages in iCloud is completely secure as long as you turn off iCloud Backup.

Edit: Backups are also encrypted of course, but that encryption can be reversed by Apple since they hold the encryption keys. End-to-end encryption means only you hold the encryption keys.

Edit 2: Some people seem to think that Messages in iCloud has made messages more vulnerable. This is not the case. Your messages were just as exposed in your backups before iOS 11.4. Messages in iCloud is protected from law enforcement, iCloud Backup isn't and never was. Messages were always part of backups so they were always vulnerable if you had iCloud Backup turned on.

Personally I'd like to see two big features come to the web portion of iCloud

iCloud Keychain on authorized PC's. I'd like to be able to log into websites on my work computer automatically if needed. Or on my boot camp partition.

Apple Music web player just like Spotify.

What changes need to be made to Apple Music?

    Posted: 30 May 2018 02:56 PM PDT

With all the predictions for WWDC, I've seen many people say that Apple Music needs to be fixed. Most comments however, never elaborate as to what is actually broken.

As someone who hasn't really had any problems with the service, I'm curious as to what people think is wrong with it?

iPhone calendar event alert cancelling alarm?

    Posted: 30 May 2018 11:30 PM PDT

For example, I have an alarm set for 8:00am and an event on my calendar at 10:00am set to have an alert/reminder 2 hours before.

My alarm will start go off, maybe ring once, before the event notification sound will play and override my alarm (making it stop ringing).

Is there a way to disable event alerts from overriding or disabling alarms?

This is a weird bug that hasn't been fixed and google doesn't turn up anything.

I've been late on to work because of this. The only workaround I've found is to set my alarms to odd times (e.g., 7:58 instead of 8:00).

    Thanks!

How is "I'm Upset" by Drake not allowed in Canada anymore???

    Posted: 31 May 2018 02:40 AM PDT

    Hi there,

Sorry if this seems like I'm angry but I'm quite annoyed that apparently a drake song and Midnight City suddenly aren't available in Canada. Is there any reason for this or is there some setting that's messed up.

Basically in playlists it's completely greyed out, when I click show in Apple music it says it's not available in my region and then I can just search it in browse and listen to it there perfectly fine.

    Thanks for any help

Should I buy iCloud storage or physical storage?

    Posted: 30 May 2018 04:29 PM PDT

Hi, I'm 16 years old, and I've been a crazy Apple fanboy for longer than I can remember. Obviously I don't have a crazy job yet (I do have a low paying job however) and I was wondering if you think 50gb or 200gb of iCloud storage is worth the money. I know it's not much at all, but the only other bill I pay myself is Apple Music. I have a lot of photos and videos that I would like to keep but unfortunately I am in kinda trapped in a corner. When I went into high school I bought myself a MacBook Air to use as my school and home computer. The computer is amazing and all but the only problem is the storage capacity. I regretfully went with the 128gb option knowing I would need more but I simply couldn't afford more. I know it is possible to upgrade the storage inside of the computer to 240gb to 2tb for a few hundred bucks but I'm not even keeping this computer for much longer anyway (about 2 years or less) So my big question is do you think it's better to shell out the money for a permanent storage upgrade or pay a buck or 3 a month for similar storage.

    Thanks for the input!

Where is airplay 2 support for airport express?

    Posted: 30 May 2018 09:27 AM PDT

I know the airport line has been discontinued but I had read an article or two stating that the airport express would be getting an update to support airplay 2. There were also reports of early 11.4 betas showing airport expresses in the home app (suggesting airplay 2 support). Does anyone have any more info on this?

Got Bluetooth headphones and an iPhone? Can I get you to watch 20 seconds of a weird YouTube vid to see if your headphones make strange noises?

    Posted: 30 May 2018 07:21 AM PDT

tl;dr Vid link below, watch first 20 seconds, see if it pops, let me know what you're listening on please.

So, I'm trying to get to the bottom of a recording issue I've been having for some time with iOS 11.

My work involves a lot of voice recording and we often use handheld stereo recorders. Ever since iOS 11 was launched I've discovered that the Bluetooth headphones I have to hand, and any I've tried, can produce quite loud popping/crackling sounds on the right channel when there's audio mostly on the left channel, particularly in transitions from silence to sound.

Well with the headphone jack going, I need to buy a fistful of BT headphones and, if they exist, I'd like to get ones that aren't going to deafen my staff. If they don't exist I'd like Apple to fix whatever is causing it.

Anyway, I've found...err...this weirdness...that happens to reproduce the issue perfectly in the first 20 seconds every time. Make sure it's in 720p to hear it most prominently.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-88UmScFZO0

If you get what I'm getting, the first 10 seconds should produce shimmery artefacts and popping sounds on the right channel, 10 to 20 seconds should sound fairly normal...for a video of a woman poking an ear shaped microphone with sticks. This seems to occur on any iOS 11 device I try.

If you try this on a Mac (and I assume Windows or Android) it'll probably sound normal from the beginning.

Either way, could you please let me know what headphones, device and iOS version you're using and whether you hear the popping/crackling.

Edit: Thanks all for your input, greatly appreciated. I've now got replicability and quite a collection of devices displaying the issue and a set that don't.

    iPhone storage

    Posted: 30 May 2018 09:35 PM PDT

My iPhone 7 Plus 128gb iOS 11.3 crashes every time every time I try to check the storage. It'll get stuck "calculating" and then after I exit out of the settings i can't open any apps with them crashing a few times before everything goes back to normal. I've updated the software (been happening since before 11.3) and I've restored my phone and nothing. My iPad almost had the same problem. I delete an app that may be a little sketchy and it fixed it. Deleted the same app on my phone and it didn't fix the problem. There's nothing else that I can think of that is similar to that app. I can't find anything about someone with the same problem as me. It's not a big deal, my phone isn't close to being full (61 gb used (It'll tell me that much)) and I'm going to upgrade in a few months anyways. I just want to see if anybody had any input. Thanks.
