How do I set up dual boot with High Sierra?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 10:18 PM PDT

I have a MacBook Pro early 2011 dual boot Yosemite and Snow Leopard. I would like to set up another partition for High Sierra (I have an empty partition for this purpose). I would prefer for it to use HFS+. How might I do this without adversely affecting the existing partitions?

    Thanks

A harmless, but mildly annoying design inconsistency in High Sierra

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 12:15 PM PDT

So, remember how with the release of High Sierra and iOS 11 Apple has changed the App Store icon? You'd think it would replace the old "an A made out of school supplies" icon across the macOS, right? Well, for whatever reason all other "app-related" icons that I recall (/Applications folder, Xcode, generic app icon) still feature the old design..

This isn't really a big deal, but I noticed it a couple months ago and it's been bugging me since. <.<

Where is refresh rate in high sierra?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 12:53 PM PDT

I finally upgraded to high sierra on my 2016 touchbar macbook pro 15. The issue is I have a 4k display and a 1080 P display. The default mac tb3 to hdmi adapter won't do 4K at 60 hz so I had to buy a 3P one. In Sierra I could control the refresh rate in the display preferences but that is gone in High Sierra. Can someone show me how to control the rate? Thanks

    Help with hard drives!

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 10:47 PM PDT

So on my 2,1 Mac Pro I have two hard drives inside, I have OS X 10.11 on one of them (the smaller one because I'm stupid), but would like to know if it would be possible to either combine the two drives into one, or to move all of the data from the smaller one to the larger one. Thanks!

? Folder and Ø after macOS installation?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 10:51 AM PDT

    Hi everyone:

I helped my friend's SO swap out a dead HDD and put in a Samsung 830 series (MZ-7PC128D) SSD on a 2012 A1278 MBP, which was the exact same type I used on a salvaged 2011 A1286 MBP I used for about 8 months before I had a chance to upgrade to a 2015 A1398 MBP. I've reimaged macOS dozens of times at my last job (almost 2/3 of the 250 EUs used Macs), easy-peasy... or so I thought since Murphy's Law is kicking me in the head with this.

Anyway, here's the steps I've taken:

    • Put in a new, sealed SSD, and it'd complete the installation but won't load upon restart, and I tried everything until I got a hunch since it was hard to get a straight answer on what the error was...
    • Took it off, hooked it up to my PC and ran CrystalDiskInfo and returned a bad drive error, confirmed my theory using an old HDD I had laying around and it installed successfully, so I exchanged the SSD.
    • Got the new SSD, ran CDI to be sure and it was good, but this time won't detect the USB even after an SMC+PRAM reset for some reason, so I had to use IBR and installed 10.8, upgraded to 10.13, then went into App Store and got every single update so that it was on 10.13.3 before I returned the laptop to them.
    • The next morning, she claims that the ? folder popped up. I brought it back in and CDI still shows it's a good drive, Disk Utility doesn't show any errors, but the "Select startup disk" menu is blank, so I took the computer with me to try to reinstall macOS and do some extended testing, but she forgot her AC adapter and I only have a Gen2 MagSafe.
    • I tried doing both a USB 10.13 install and an IBR 10.8 install again, and the first reboot would be a blank screen for almost 3-5 minutes and eventually show the ? folder and Ø for a split second in between, which is both with the SSD and the aforementioned old HDD.

I'm thinking it's the logic board but the basic AHT passed, but trying extended AHT as we speak (EDIT: That passed too)... Any thoughts? Thanks!

How do you view passwords in Keychain Access for Wi-Fi networks that have been "share password"ed to my iPhone?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 12:10 PM PDT

iOS 11's new "share password" thing. The passwords sync to iCloud, but when you open them in Keychain Access with "show password", it just gives a seemingly hashed number. Anyone know what it's salted and hashed with? I don't like Apple playing nanny with how I access my passwords.

Is there any reason to fear continuing making Time Machine backups after iMac starts getting kernel panics at start up??

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 10:45 AM PDT

A few months ago my iMac started showing kernel panics at start up. When that happens, I have to hold the power button to power off, and then try to boot up again. Sometimes I get 4 or 5 kernel panics before a good start up, sometimes I only get one and the next try starts up fine.

Since this started, I haven't done any Time Machine backups because I have no idea if whatever caused this issue could be backed up. So I wanted to save my last 'good' backup before this issue started.

Is there any reason to fear making new backups? I don't want to make a back up and then if I ever need to use it, it will have the issue.

Macbook Air (mid 2012) won't wake after long standby

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 08:06 AM PDT

This occurs 100% of the time after a long sleep. It doesn't happen after short sleep.

Repro steps: 1. Open lid 2. Type password correctly Computer freezes. No mouse movement 3. Do Hard power button reset, computer fully boots, everything is great.

    MacOS High Sierra 10.13.4 Beta

I'm happy to wipe the machine and restore from backup if that will help. I've already reset NVRAM and SMC, and deleted the hibernate file. Disk Check shows no errors when run in single user mode. Hardware diagnostic (boot with 'D' key) shows no errors.
