UPDATE: Micro Center is advertising 2.9 GHz Touch Bar MBPs and putting 2.6 GHz in the box

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 04:41 PM PDT

UPDATE: A rep from Micro Center corporate contacted me after seeing the Reddit post. She shipped an order with the right specs to my local Micro Center for me to pick up at no additional cost.

Additionally, she said Micro Center reviewed the constructive feedback from /r/apple, and apologized that it had taken so long to correct this mistake. They are looking into changing a few of their procedures so this doesn't happen again, especially since customer service is a priority for them in the era of online retail.

My thanks to the individuals within company that took this seriously and are trying to improve the system!

Original post tl;dr: Website, receipt, and SKU all said 2.9 GHz on the MBP, only way to know it was 2.6 GHz was when opening the box. Originally Micro Center was only willing to refund me instead of providing the right laptop.

    Happy 42nd Birthday Apple

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 09:54 PM PDT

Apple Founder Steve Jobs thought it would be funny to found his company on April fools day. Here's to the biggest joke in history!

On this day lets reflect as always. What brought you to apple? Have you left at any point only to return? And of course what single product truly changed your life?

Looked at porn drunk last night & got a virus. Apple wants me to call. So embarrassed. What to do?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 11:51 AM PDT

The title pretty much explains it. I'm a young woman and I'm extremely embarrassed to call Apple about it. It's still stuck on what I was looking at. The tabs won't close. The rest of my phone is fine so far. Is there any way around calling them? Has this happened to anyone before? Help!!!!

New High Sierra 10.13.4 delivers on a feature request I submitted around 6 weeks ago.

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 03:06 PM PDT

I know I'm not the only one who submitted this but I just want to say how much I like Apple for this.

Around six weeks ago I asked the Apple support if there is a way to prevent Safari/keychain from automatically inserting usernames and passwords into login forms on websites. I knew, if there were multiple accounts for a website, you would have a dropdown list to choose which account you want to use and keychain would fill in the login data, but if there was only one account it would be automatically filled in when loading the website.

My concern there was, that scripts running in the background (disguised as ads for example) could harvest that data by "simulating" those login forms in the background.

You can imagine my delight when I read the update notes today for the macOS update.

Obviously I have no idea how many similar requests there were, probably a lot, but nevertheless I have to say that even during the exchange with the support staff I felt like my concern was taken seriously and now that it's actually implemented even more so.

    Fanboy babble over.

Edit: Apparently that was already implemented in a Safari Technology Preview on 26. January. Still, I'm glad it made an official release now. But also slightly embarrassed.

Any likes / dislikes? And do you regret updating? Just wanted to hear some of y'all opinions. Thanks

Would you rather give up your iPhone or MacBook for a week?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 12:34 AM PDT

Edit: Basically phone vs. laptop/desktop. If you had to rely on one or the other for an entire week. No replacements.

    Moisture/condensation under iPhone X camera

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 02:23 PM PDT

Hey, so I tried taking a picture today with my phone and they were coming out blurry. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that there was significant clouding beneath the camera lens. Phone hasn't been submerged in water ever, but has been exposed to splashes, but not recently. Water damage indicator in the SIM card tray doesn't show any damage either. Don't have Apple Care Plus and there aren't any Apple Stores around in my country either. How should I proceed? Photos: https://imgur.com/a/uRed7

The new ‘Reduce File Size’ in iWork apps is a great help for managing iCloud storage

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 01:53 AM PDT

    https://i.imgur.com/yT82I9c.jpg

I was bumping up against the 50GB limit on my iCloud account, but unwilling to cull classroom Keynote presentations in the 100's of MBs. I was also having problems printing a 120MB Numbers spreadsheet from the flaky network printer at work (a PDF version fared no better).

The 'Reduce File Size' option has cut some video-heavy Keynote presentations by half (mainly by reducing video quality (not a big deal through a projector), and discarding video outside of trims). And the photo-heavy spreadsheet went from 120MB to 300KB.

I got a couple of GB in iCloud back, which will keep the 200GB-iCloud wolf from the door for a good while – especially now new docs can be saved at a minimum size.

    Uses for a 2008 iMac.

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 12:57 PM PDT

Long story short, I have this Early 2008 iMac. It is the 20 inch one and has a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 Gbs of 800Mhz DDR2 RAM and ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT 128 MB graphics. I have updated it to the latest OS X version it will accept. It "beach balls" quite a bit and applications take some time to launch. I have been thinking of selling it, but if there is a better use I could get out of it, I would be happy. Currently I am using it as a SSH terminal and second browsing computer, but since it is a Mac running OS X, I feel I could get some better use out of it. I already have a Windows/ Linux PC with 16 GBs of RAM, GTX 1060, and a Ryzen 5 1600. I use it as my main PC, and I have no intention of making the Mac my main computer, so I am wondering if there is another purpose I could use it for. I have researched appropriate RAM and storage upgrades and I could easily upgrade the hard drive to an SSD and the RAM to 4 GBs for under $100, but I still don't know what I would use it for. I am also wondering if I could turn it into a Linux machine for dev work.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Is AdGuard Pro for iOS any good?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 09:14 AM PDT

I've been using the free AdGuard on my iOS devices for some time now and I really like it. But I'd like to buy the Premium version in order to block ads in apps. Anyone uses it? Is it any good?

Why is Siri so dumb about location use?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 06:09 AM PDT

Siri is laughably bad at geographic-based lookups.

A few examples, bearing in mind that I live in Huntsville, Alabama.

If I fire up Siri on my iPhone and say "Call Costco Optical", it offers to call a Costco in Jacksonville, Florida. If I type "costco optical huntsville" into Bing, it correctly decides I must mean the local Costco and gives me the little info box with a phone number, et al.

If I instead say "Directions to Fuji Sushi", I get offered directions to two restaurants in Chattanooga named "Fuji Steak & Sushi". I guess in fairness I should give Siri partial credit, as the place I'm actually looking for shows up as "Fuji Japanese Restaurant" when you search for "fuji sushi huntsville". (And this is better than Alexa: ask "directions to fuji sushi" in my kitchen and you'll get a helpful summary of travel info to Sakura, which is a 5-minute drive away).

I could give dozens more examples of this behavior while using CarPlay but some of that is legitimately due to misrecognition mondegreens caused by poor audio quality on my in-car BT. Much of it is a simple lack of awareness that, if I am in city A and making a query, I probably want results for city A, or at least neighboring cities, not something similar-sounding three states away.

Iphone 6S unresponsive / black screen of death?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 03:53 PM PDT

this morning my iPhone suddenly went blacked and unresponsive. I've tried the sleep/wake and home button technique. I've also tried charging it. But none of these methods worked. Has anyone ever experienced this before? UPDATE: so i was able to reset my iphone to its factory settings. But still, has the black screen and no noises? Should i get a battery replacement?

My son's iPod has lost its brains

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 08:25 PM PDT

I hope this is the right place.

He's got an iPod Touch, latest gen. Tonight while he was playing it, he was suddenly crashed out of his game and all of the apps we installed (except the most basic ones that come with the device) have simply vanished from the screen. All of them.

Going into device memory I can see that the apps are "still there", they're taking up 14GB of the 32GB available, they have names, etc., but I can't do anything with them from that menu, of course.

What's more, I had to reset his iCloud password which I did from my computer. Now, when trying to do anything with the iPod I get a notice that I have to sign in to iCloud. Of course I can't. Every time I try I get a notice that "Verification failed. There was an error connecting to the Apple ID server."

I cannot sign out, I cannot sign in. I am completely dead in the water. I've done the hard reboot.

    What's next?
