[Discussion] Cracking noise on IPhone 8?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 06:55 AM PDT

Just recently got an iPhone 8, fantastic phone, its been a couple of days since I got it. Whilst cleaning the screen above the front camera of the screen. If I were to push in on the screen I hear a faint popping/crack noise like if the screen is going back in place. Happens a bit more in warm conditions or when phone is warm. Is this normal? Any others hear it on their unit? Me being OCD?

Its a small noise but the OCD kicks in and is annoying.

Id like to hear stories of others and what they did.

    Underrated iPhone X feature

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 03:15 PM PDT

I love how smooth the bottom border of the phone feels when you go to swipe home. It's like butter thanks to the edge to edge display.

I realize this sounds mildly sensual

I am drunk. So bear with me. But you know I'm right.

IPhone 7+ refurbished or iPhone 8+

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 08:05 AM PDT

I had an iPhone 7 128GB (normal size) and I loved it, but I forgot it in my pants and put them on the washing machine... So I took the iPhone to service repair and they said it's beyond repair.

I live in Bolivia, South America so iPhones are really expensive over here. A friend is traveling to the US and I see on the Apple store that they are selling refurbished iPhone 7, and I'm interested in getting the plus size: for the camera, extra ram, battery and screen size (I had no problems with the regular iPhone 7 size BTW). I see that the 128GB model is $689, and I wonder if I should get it, or aim for the iPhone 8 plus 64GB which is $799 (the Red color looks sick! )

I wonder if it's worth the price difference, specially since I've heard that Apple refurbished products are very good. Or should I aim for a new phone? Please give me your insights and recommendations!

    5G in next iPhones?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 08:02 AM PDT

Anyone think Apple will go 5G for the next model iPhones, or will they wait until 2019?

Android phones will start getting 5G towards end of 2018.

3D Touch not working on Reddit app

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 07:58 AM PDT

I use the 3D Touch on the Reddit app to have a quick scan of a link instead of opening the link and going to twitter or wherever, but I noticed today it's stopped working. I have an iPhone 8 64gb on iOS 11.3.1. I'm not sure when it stopped working, but I did update iOS on Saturday and I don't think I've used reddit app since then. Not sure how this could make it stop working, just saying.

Everything else is working fine 3D Touch wise throughout the phone and in other apps.

Does anyone else have this problem or suggest a solution? I've reinstalled and rebooted the phone etc with no luck.

iPhone calendar list doesn’t show calendars made on mac

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 10:07 AM PDT

On iOS 11.3.1 and macOS 10.13.4. Added lots of events to the calendar app on Mac but none show up on iPhone. When I try to add a new calendar to iPhone it works because it shows up on the list on Mac but doesn't show up on the list on iPhone. Tried restarting, updating, setting sync to all events. On default calendar in settings the only options are gmail calendar and On My Phone calendar, iCloud or Mac calendars don't appear.

Phone keeps ringing even if I try to answer calls.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 09:00 AM PDT

iPhone 7. Up to date iOS. Tried restarting.

When someone calls. I answer and the call dialogue comes up but instead of connecting, it just keeps ringing and I can't hear their voice. Callers say it sounds like I'm not answering and just letting it ring through to vm. Any insights appreciated.

Can someone explain to me how this iPhone scam works?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 04:28 PM PDT

    Here's the run down:

I bought 2 iPhones; A 7 plus 128GB and an iPhone X 64GB (both with FaceTime) from a store in Meena market in Dubai. This was one of those stores that sells phones of any brand, so not Apple authorised.

Anyway, I paid AED 2,780 (~USD $750) for the 7 plus and AED 3830 (~USD 1050) for the X. The boxes were sealed, I opened them in the shop itself, checked both the phones and there were no red flags. Since I was in a hurry and there was no reason to suspect any funny business, I left the store poorer than I was when I walked in.

Once I reached my hotel, I slipped my sim into the 7 plus and turned it on. Setup went smoothly, until it started restoring from my iCloud backup. 2 minutes into the process the phone went into a reboot loop. As you'd imagine, I freaked the fuck out.

My first thought was to contact Apple and see if they can help me with this. Here's where the scam unravelled itself.

On telling them my phone's Serial number (from the box), I was told that my phone has been out of warranty for the last 85 days. I started panicking and immediately gave them the serial number for the X, again from the box, and lo; this phone was under warranty but had 323 days of coverage left.

    So here's the situation now:

I have an iPhone 7 Plus with no warranty and an iPhone X which had been first activated 40 days ago. But they look brand spanking new.

Next thing I did was check the box and accessories of the iPhone 7 Plus and here are the few things I noticed:

The box didn't feel like an original Apple box. I had to pull the lid away from the base as opposed to just gently lifting the lid like I was used to. The sticker on the bottom of the box that has all phone details was crooked; as if it had been attached by a human and not a machine. The iPhone X's box and accessories were all fine though.

One sleepless night later, I went to the shop where I purchased them from and confronted the shopkeeper; as expected he acted surprised at first, then denied selling me shady phones and this eventually turned to anger. At this point I asked him to log on to apple's website and check the coverage of the 7 plus.

This time he entered the IMEI number and not the serial number, and to my utter disbelief, the website said the phone was under coverage till April 26th, 2018. I asked him to check it through its serial number and he said "No no, you check IMEI not serial number. Serial number is always wrong"

I insisted, and just like the night before, it said my coverage has expired. He said "that's because all phones have the same serial number here in Dubai" Wait what? How is that even possible? So I asked him to show me another sealed iPhone 7 Plus; which he did. And guess what? My phone and this other phone had the same exact serial numbers on their boxes.

At this point luckily, my 7 Plus, which I hadn't turned on since the night before, decided it was the right time to turn back on. I checked its serial number from the about section and it turns out; the serial numbers on the box and on the device didn't match. I showed this to the seller and asked for an explanation. Silence.

The jig was up; he started conversing with his fellow shopkeeps in their native tongue, this went on for a good 2-3 minutes until finally he agreed to replace them both with brand new phones "with matching serial numbers on the box and device" I asked him to give me my money back instead, which he initially contested, but I was stern and threatened to go to the police if he didn't comply. He gave me a full refund, I went and bought both phones from the Apple store in Dubai mall for a couple hundred AED more, each.

Oh and I should also mention that my iCloud restore went smoothly on the new 7 plus, didn't get into a reboot loop. I feared that I might have a corrupt backup but that wasn't the case after all.

After all this my questions are these:

    1. How do these people get their hands on brand new or at least brand new looking iPhones with factory coverage? The box for the 7 plus definitely didn't feel like it was an original Apple box but the phone surely was, since it had the full 1 year coverage.

    2. Were these refurbished phones? If yes, why didn't they also have new boxes and accessories?

    3. Does Apple sell refurbished phones to small time phone dealers without original boxes and accessories? If so, why? Isn't that encouraging such scams?

    4. If the IMEI numbers on the box and device matched, why didn't the serial numbers?

    5. I found the Dubai consumer protection bureau's email address and gave them an account of what happened with pictures of the phone and box. Is there any other authority I can write to?

TL;DR - Phone shop in Dubai sold me a brand new sealed iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone X, on checking the warranty coverage online I discovered that the 7 plus was out of warranty and the X had 320 odd days of coverage left. Also realised that the serial numbers on the device and the box didn't match, but IMEI numbers did. After arguing with the seller, he offered to give me "new phones with proper matching of box and phone identification numbers" I declined and got a refund.
