    Windowed Full Screen?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2018 09:03 PM PDT

I'm not sure what else to call it but I am running windows on my desktop and when I watch Youtube and Twitch fullscreen on it, I can alt tab to a different window to chat on messenger or look something up. And the window would just be over lapping the full screen video. Is it possible to do that on a mac? Maybe a setting?

Samsung Galaxy S9 Emojis Appear as ?? on iPhone 7 Plus

    Posted: 09 Apr 2018 08:28 PM PDT

My mom recently upgraded to a Galaxy S9. I own an iPhone 7 Plus. Whenever she tries to send me emojis, I receive ?? instead of the actual emoji. She can receive my emojis, but I can't receive hers. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, is there a fix? I'm currently running iOS 11.3. Previously, my mom had a Galaxy S5, and we were both able to send/receive each other's emojis.

Apple ID Recovery-- Went from ready in 1 day to 13 days?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2018 10:06 PM PDT

    Hi All,

I've been attempting to recover an Apple ID for my mother, which was under my email address. However, I forgot the password and attempted to use Apple's account recovery process. Initially it told me that I needed to wait 24 hours for the account to be ready for recovery, then the instructions would be sent to my phone.

I waited the 24 hours and checked the progress again--only to see that it is now '13 days until ready for recovery'. Can anyone give me some advice or should I reach out to apple directly? Thanks.

How to see if I deeply scratched screen?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2018 09:38 PM PDT

I have the MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017) retina. I was wiping the screen and my fingernail accidently scratched the screen 2wice. I cant locate the scratches and am wondering if fingernails can cause only hairline scratches or deep scratches and how can you tell if you have a deep scratch? I dont see anything will full brightness as I type on this subreddit which has a white and gray background. Is there another type of background I should test this on?

    Text missing from macbook pro

    Posted: 09 Apr 2018 09:19 PM PDT

Could someone explain how this happened? I was typing in the notes app and suddently the text started glitching between the text and black and white. Also the search bar in chrome disappeared, and so did the text in the toolbar in the dock (or whatever the part with the names on top are called). Here's the pic, I put it on imgur. https://imgur.com/a/Ls3Yj

Edit: I use the computer for fairly light use (youtube, photoshopping) so any advice would be appreciated. Also, could I take it into an apple store?

    High Sierra partition problem

    Posted: 09 Apr 2018 09:13 PM PDT

Hey guys, I have been trying to partition my internal ssd to run windows but can't seem to figure it out. I run Bootcamp and able to get to the final step where the size of the partition is determined. Upon restart, when windows launches and it asks where I would like to install windows 10, it says I am not able to install onto the bootcamp partition (or anywhere else for that matter). Does anyone know how to fix this or get around it? I'd appreciate any help. Thanks in advance!

computer monitor stops working on Apple Mac Mini

    Posted: 09 Apr 2018 04:09 PM PDT

Hi people, I have a problem with my computer monitor on my Apple Mac Mini (late 2012). Occasionally when I turn my computer on, the monitor doesn't come on. Also a few times my monitor suddenly stopped working and said it didn't get a signal, so far always within a few minutes after turning it on. The reason why I suspect it might be the computer and not the monitor is sometimes, it starts working again if I push the on/off button on my Mac for a few seconds, which is something I as a layman wouldn't expect if it is the monitor or the cables. I have the latest software installed. Can anybody say why this would happen?

Mount a standard HFS disk image as read write?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2018 09:03 PM PDT

I was wondering if there was an easy way to mount non-plus HFS disk images as read write. I recently got started emulating old macOS versions and it'd be nice to easily share files between the vm and my regular machine.

iOS 11.3 Music/Audio Stuttering When Phone Locks

    Posted: 09 Apr 2018 09:00 PM PDT

I finally updated to iOS 11 a week ago after having a new battery installed in my iPhone 6S Plus. Everything's been working fine and dandy, BUT when I'm playing any kind audio (Spotify, Cesium, Music, etc.) and the phone locks, the audio playing will skip and stutter for a couple seconds and then go back to normal. This happens maybe...a dozen times a day, and it's getting irritating. I didn't have this problem with iOS 10 at any point, and everything else with iOS 11 works great, so... any ideas what's causing it?

No Profiles Are Currently Installed when trying to add a config profile

So I'm trying to install a config profile, where it asks do I want to install the app, and do I want to install the configuration profile for it. I hit Allow, and it takes me to settings, where it only says No Profiles Are Currently Installed. It doesn't give me the option to add a profile. What should I try?

Replacement iPhone 6s screen won't work on phone, but works on another phone (Bonus touchID question)

    Posted: 09 Apr 2018 07:15 PM PDT

Tried switching a friends 6s screen today, since she cracked hers. She bought one on amazon that was well reviewed. I got everything switched, but couldn't get the screen to turn on at all. Tried a restore from DFU, tried a hard restart (I think, since I couldn't see), tried power cycling by disconnecting the battery, discharging the static by holding the power down with the battery disconnected, reconnecting the screen, etc. All the while the phone is on and responding to iTunes.

Finally, I decided to take the screen off my personal 6s, and tried it on hers, and the replacement on mine. Frustratingly, both worked. I'd leave it as is and just switch the home buttons except her screen is white and mine is black. I decided to call it a night, so right now, mine has the replacement and she has my screen. Both work 100% (besides touch ID obviously).

Shes going to try to contact the manufacturer to see if they have any idea. I'm going to tackle it again in a couple days when we're both free. Does anyone have any idea why it wouldn't work on her phone but works on mine?

Also since they seem to have integrated the home button cable into the screen, is the original cable no longer required for touch ID to work? I know for the 6 you had to transfer the cable to the new screen as well.

Quick question. If the recipient of my iMessage has her phone turned off do the messages turn green and get delivered by SMS or do they stay blue and wait for them to turn their phone back on again?

Help, cannot boot MBP from external SSD via USB...

    Posted: 09 Apr 2018 04:08 PM PDT

    Hello,

In the past, I have used an early 2015-MBP to boot up my external SSD via USB. Now, I am on a 2017 MBP running High Sierra and I can no longer boot up the SSD.

I've tried two options; pressing "hold" during restart and selecting the SSD in the Startup Disk option. Both result in a circle with a slash through it. The ability to select the SSD is there in both cases but it won't boot.

Has something changed since I'm using a new computer? Is there anything I can do get this working. Your help is very much appreciated!

    macOS seemingly randomly crashing

    Posted: 09 Apr 2018 01:23 PM PDT

I'm using a 2014 MacBook Pro with Retina display.

The first time that it crashed was in the middle of an extremely heavy Cookie Clicker session in September or October 2015.

I ran Apple Diagnostics but the report didn't tell me anything actionable.

When it crashes, the screen becomes blank but remains lit and the keyboard's backlight remains lit. Any playing audio ceases and the keys and trackpad become unresponsive. I then either issue a hard halt by holding the power button down or the computer will turn itself off.

It'll even crash when the laptop is shut.

It crashes at inconsistent frequencies. The only pattern that I've recognized is that it is more likely to crash under heavy load. However, it still crashes under a light load as well. Initially, it only occurred once every two to four weeks, if I had to guess. At its peak frequency, it would crash after just five or so minutes of uptime.

This has happened on a wide array of versions of macOS. I currently have the latest version installed.

Once, it even crashed before I finished setting up my user account after installing a fresh copy of macOS onto it. So it's unrelated to third-party software.

I have modified the GPT and even created an entirely new GPT on multiple occasions. However, the fact that I can boot from and use the SSD as one normally would, I'm inclined to believe that that's irrelevant. I'll provide the current GPT upon request. For more information about this, see this thread.

Neither my friend (who has a 2015 MacBook Pro with Retina display) nor I could get either computer to crash after swapping SSDs for an entire day, after which we swapped SSDs back. We did this in the middle of the period in which I was experiencing the peak crash frequency.

I cannot reproduce the issue on Arch Linux at all. This suggests that the issue is with macOS. But the fact that nobody else seems to have this problem suggests otherwise.

In the logs, the only indication of a crash that I can find is the abrupt cessation of messages and the boot message indicating that the system was not shutdown properly. I will furnish the logs upon request.

    Backup software

    Posted: 09 Apr 2018 12:19 PM PDT

Hi. I have two external hardrives that I'd like to use as backups for my Mac book pro laptop. After moving all my files to the two drives, I'm going to delete them from my laptop. When I make new files, I'd like to keep them on my laptop, but have them added to the drives.

I'd like a piece of software that could do this automatically. Also, I've been doing this manually with one of the drives for a while, so there will be redundancies. Can the recommended software detect copies automatically and suggest deletions?

    Thanks.

orange checkmark lock screen + freeze

    Posted: 09 Apr 2018 04:01 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I'm running High Sierra (10.13.4) on a 2012 MacBook Pro.

When I try to wake my laptop from sleep, I see a lock screen with an orange checkmark beside my name.

The lock screen background is the background I use on my second monitor. I use FileVault encryption, so my lock screen is normally white.

When I enter my password to unlock, my computer freezes, forcing me to perform a hard reset.

This has been going on for about 30 hours.

Any idea what's wrong? Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Here's a photo of the lock screen - https://imgur.com/a/zMWD1

    Is an AirPort worth it?

Just bought an iPhone 8+ but looking for advice to switch to a different device

    Posted: 09 Apr 2018 11:30 AM PDT

Hey everyone, not sure where to ask this but I thought I would try here.

So in October I bought an 8+ with Verizon. I haven't upgraded my phone since they got rid of their upgrade policy so I'm not totally familiar with what my options are, but currently, I'm paying monthly for the 8+.

This is going to sound dumb, but if I use my phone too long my thumbs hurt a lot. I went from a 6 to the 8+ and the size difference is not worth it for me. I don't even use my phone particularly too much, but if its a heavy texting day my thumbs ache. (lol)

I would like to trade my 8+ in for maybe the X or a regular 8 but I'm not sure what my best options are for the value, I do not want to lose a ton of money on the 8+.

What would you guys recommend in terms of switching from an 8+ to the X or a regular 8 without losing significant money?

    Thanks!

I just bought a new SSD to replace the HDD in my 2008 iMac. I don't want to clone the old drive, I just want to cleanly install OS X El Capitan on the new drive and replace the old one with it. What is the best way to install the OS on the new drive?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2018 11:04 AM PDT

Seems like this should be easy to find online but I'm having trouble. I currently have the new SSD plugged in externally (using a USB to SATA connector), and when I plugged it in, a window popped up that says "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." with the option to Initialize. Should I initialize it here, or would it be better to do it under disk utility or something else? And do I need to initialize/format it before I actually install the OS?

This brings me to my main question: how do I actually get El Capitan on my new drive? I have no OS CD/DVD/thumb-drive or anything to load it from, but I've seen that it can be loaded straight from the old disk (or even the internet) on some machines? My plan is to somehow load it onto the SSD while it's plugged in externally, and then once it's on, actually open the iMac up and swap the drives. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Time for a new laptop but I'm really confused what to get.

    Posted: 09 Apr 2018 06:12 AM PDT

I have a 15" MBP 2012 that I've upgraded to the max, i7 2.3ghz, 16gb, 2tb hybrid hdd, 1050p screen (so not retina, but not shit). It's been perfect for me, but it's just a bit too bulky now a days as I'm travelling a lot more.

I would sell it but I dropped it about 4 years ago and it has a dent on the corner so I doubt anyone would want it, seems I can get about £500 for it based on others in similar condition but to be honest, I think it's worth more than that to me as a desktop so I can get a slightly less powerful smaller laptop, thinking 512gb of storage, which will be enough that I don't have to worry about it.

Thing is, none of the new laptops seem to really be what I want, the closest is the Air, which I could max out, for £1300ish, and would be pretty good.

I use a lot of external drives and things and I can't see that changing in the next 5 years, because my industry tends not to use cloud based storage. So the USB A port is a big advantage but I can get over that... but then the macbook is a pretty shitty deal too still. Sure its a bit smaller, and has a better screen but other than that its worse in every way, and its much more expensive, so it's just not a wise decision in my eyes.

The MBP is a better option than the macbook, but just so expensive that it's hard to justify when you spec it to 512gb and 8gb its base configuration only offers a slightly better processor and screen over the air, but is £300 more expensive.

So basically the only macbook that seems like its actually worth buying is the macbook air, which is mental because it's really old and not really what I had in mind when I started looking into getting a new laptop.

Anyone got any thoughts on this? Is the Air really the best option for me? Or should I just take the £300 hit and get a mbp because its prettier, does it offer anything more than that?
