    Help with verbose mode.

    Posted: 25 Mar 2018 09:41 PM PDT

Sometimes my macs screen stops working and I can only see it if I connect to an external monitor, but it just boots to the Apple logo loading screen and stops at 3/4 the way through.

Booting in safe mode is fine

Tried verbose mode today and here's the last thing it showed, before quickly turning to a black screen again.

    Any suggestions ?

Help with Rotating Desktop Background Photo

    Posted: 25 Mar 2018 10:27 PM PDT

Hi all! I have about 50 photos that I have favorited in the Photos app on my MacBook Pro (running 10.13.3). I would like them appear as my desktop background in random order.

When I go to the Desktop settings in System Preferences, I see an option to Change Picture Every (x) Minutes. I checked that box and navigated to the Favorites section of the Photos folder to select the source of the changing pictures, but only about 10 of the photos that I favorited appear.

Any ideas how to make all 50 photos appear in the System Preferences window? I confirmed that they appear in the Favorites section in the Photos app. I restarted my MacBook Pro, but that didn't help.

    Thanks!

Rolling back from High Sierra to Mavericks or Yosemite?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 12:59 AM PDT

I was reinstalling an old 2010 MacBook the other day, and something got me thinking.

What would be a difference for my 2014 MacBook Air if I went back to Mavericks or Yosemite from High Sierra. The thing's got 4gb of RAM. And I can't find the base values of consumption of the earlier or current versions.

Got me thinking that it might help this little guy work a little easier.

I also think I shouldn't have a problem with my software that I use. Switched to Firefox from Safari. NTFS Paragon is purchased, more than one version. Parralels (with Windows XP) and some VPN apps that have been out for years...

Also don't have an iPhone anymore, so I don't care about any of the Apple services.

So I was wondering what this wonderful community has to say about this? Or are there some of you that tried this?

I didn't notice my Mac become faster by the coming updates, nor slower. So I'm not really complaining. Just want to know if there are any advantages of switching?

    I'll re-post this to /r/osx

After installing my SSD into my iMac, I still see Macintosh HD when booting up.

    Posted: 25 Mar 2018 03:14 PM PDT

After installing my SSD and Boot Camp, I noticed that there's still an icon called "Macintosh HD" when I hold down Option during boot up. Selecting it will just result in a circle with a slash through it. My SSD is named "iMac SSD", but is there a way I can remove the Macintosh HD from the list of options during boot up? Another less tech-savvy user will also be using this computer, and I want to prevent any accidental selections.

EDIT: This is the output of diskutil list /dev/disk0 (internal, physical):
    #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
    0: GUID_partition_scheme *500.1 GB disk0
    1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB disk0s1
    2: Apple_HFS iMac SSD 300.0 GB disk0s2
    3: Apple_Boot Recovery HD 650.0 MB disk0s3
4: Microsoft Basic Data BOOTCAMP 199.2 GB disk0s4

    /dev/disk1 (internal):
    #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
    0: GUID_partition_scheme 28.0 GB disk1 1: EFI EFI 314.6 MB disk1s1 . 2: Apple_CoreStorage Macintosh HD 27.6 GB disk1s2
    3: Apple_Boot Boot OS X 134.2 MB disk1s3

Does macOS have “services” that you can prevent from starting like Windows does?

    Posted: 25 Mar 2018 07:08 AM PDT

I have a couple of peripherals that I don't use very often, probably once every few weeks - my Wacom Intuos tablet and my Shuttle Pro video editing wheel. Both of these devices have apps that launch at startup to control them. I like to keep my Menu Bar area clean of apps that aren't being used, as well as my systems' resource footprint overall, so I'd prefer that these apps don't launch at startup and I can launch them when I need them.

Also, neither of these apps have a "quit" option. So it's not like I can just quit them and then reboot when I want to use. And finally, neither of them appear in my startup preferences so I can't disable them from there.

On my Windows machines I can just set their associated service to manual startup, and then whenever I want to use those devices I simply start the service, and stop the service when I'm done. I can't figure out how to do something similar on macOS.

Mail contacts from WORK appear in the Mail app of my personal MacBook...

    Posted: 25 Mar 2018 04:38 AM PDT

    Hello guys,

I have two MacBooks running on High Sierra : one for work belonging to my company, and one other that is mine only for personal use.

The two MacBooks have different Apple IDs, the work one has one that I created specifically for it (That I use nowhere else), and I use my personal Apple ID on my personal iPhone & MacBook...Let's also mention that I use my personal Apple ID on the iTunes app of my work laptop to be able to enjoy my Apple Music subscription, but that's all.

The annoying thing is that when I open the Mail application of my personal laptop, when I enter for example in the send-to field "A", it will display me the list of some colleagues of mine with names starting with the letter "A"..It's very annoying and I don't know how the link between my work Mails & contacts and my personal laptop is done...It only happens in Mail, no work contacts appear in the Message or Contacts apps of my personal laptop...

Any ideas guys ? I have been looking in all settings but I haven't found the solution yet..

Windows rearrange with dial display wake

    Posted: 25 Mar 2018 10:34 AM PDT

I have an iMac retina with an external display hooked up via display port. Everything works perfectly except for one minor annoyance.

When you wake up the system, the iMac wakes first then the external display. All the desktop icons readjust to their correct position on the correct display but any windows that were open stay on the iMac display. It would be nice if the computer remembered the windows that were open on the external display and put them back when the display wakes up.

Edit: sorry about the typo in the title, OS is Sierra

    Macbook won't boot

    Posted: 25 Mar 2018 02:58 AM PDT

Hoping someone can help - tried upgrading a 2010 Macbook Pro to 16GB RAM + SSD and it failed to boot, since tried putting the original HDD back in to boot and still no luck.

The cable connecting the ssd to the motherboard has been replaced and I've tried starting in single user mode and verbose mode.

Verbose mode did give me a cpu warning when it wouldn't boot... Any ideas?
