Posted: 30 Jan 2018 07:58 PM PST I just purchased a brand new 15" MacBook Pro (the 512 GB model), used smartmontools to view the SSD health info, and this is what it shows: SMART/Health Information (NVMe Log 0x02, NSID 0x0) Critical Warning: 0x00 Temperature: 28 Celsius Available Spare: 100% Available Spare Threshold: 10% Percentage Used: 0% Data Units Read: 26,147,819 [13.3 TB] Data Units Written: 33,348,008 [17.0 TB] Host Read Commands: 37,553,063 Host Write Commands: 32,305,825 Controller Busy Time: 213 Power Cycles: 1,074 Power On Hours: 22 Unsafe Shutdowns: 29 Media and Data Integrity Errors: 0 Error Information Log Entries: 0 I've confirmed this info is indeed correct by reading / writing data, and power cycling the SSD, and it was accurately reflected by smartmontools. I check this info on every computer I get, and never have more than a few gigabytes of reads and writes, and no more than a couple of power cycles. I've also purchased many SSDs individually, and the SMART info is always zeroed out. The battery also had 4 power cycles on it out of the box (every Mac I've purchased prior to this has had just 1). I purchased the MacBook Pro from bhphotovideo. It was listed as brand new, and arrived in Apple retail packaging (i.e. I don't think it's a refurbished unit). Anybody have any similar experiences / any idea what's going on here? [link] [comments] |
Review of $250 CarPlay stereo (xpost from r/CarPlay) Posted: 30 Jan 2018 07:12 PM PST Ok. So after seeing it at Walmart for $250 I went back and bought the Dual Electronics one they had in stock. I've just installed it tonight so these are pretty preliminary observations. CarPlay itself works just like any other CarPlay implementation on other systems. The touch screen is very responsive - which is good because the only thing you control with the knob is the volume. Sound quality is what you would expect from an all-digital playback. Outside of CarPlay here are some of the pros: - Price. At $250 there isn't anything remotely close.
This isn't perfect, so here are some of the cons: - Screen quality for the LCD display is just ok. The JVC/Kenwood/etc screens are better so if you want to watch videos then you might think of this as a low-end Android tablet.
All in all I think this is a terrific value. I spend most of my time within CarPlay so the rest of the stuff isn't really important. I would love an OLED screen but I love the price. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jan 2018 10:12 AM PST For me, it's improved iCloud sharing, sharing iCloud Photo Library and iCloud Drive folders. OK, I guess that's technically two. So just shared iCloud Photo Library (sharing full library with a specific person in Family Sharing, typically spouse). [link] [comments] |

iMessage service down - unable to send or receive on Macs and iPads Posted: 30 Jan 2018 08:57 PM PST I have an iMac, MBP, and an iPad and I cannot send or receive iMessage from them. It works fine on my iPhone but nothing else. Thought there was an issue with my AppleID, so I signed out of my account and logged back in successfully. However, I just can't send and receive messages from my Mac and iPad. Same problem persists with my gf's MBP. Am I the only one experiencing this problem? [link] [comments] |

Music slider & time on lock screen not updating Posted: 30 Jan 2018 08:49 PM PST Hello, sorry if it's duplicate, couldn't find anything in a search. But I'm facing this issue, the music is playing, but the lock screen player is not showing & updating the current track status. Like how much of the song is complete/ how much mins is remaining. Is there anyone else with that bug around? It's so annoying. Been bothering me since last couple updates. I don't even know how to reproduce it. It's random. [link] [comments] |

What exactly does Apple mean by 10.14 having “Snow Leopard” treatments? Posted: 30 Jan 2018 11:56 PM PST Do they mean it will be more stable? Are they changing the UI to look more like snow leopard? I can't find any articles circulating this. [link] [comments] |
