Update to a newer version but not the latest?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 06:41 PM PST

I have a mid-2007 iMac that's on 10.7.5. The hardware is too outdated to run the latest MacOS, but I don't see any of the older versions available for situations like mine. Is there anywhere or any way I can install a later version but not the latest (e.g. 10.9)?

    1Password vs. Keychain

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 08:59 AM PST

From a broad sense, I'm not seeing the reason to purchase 1Password, when the keychain built in OS/iOS seems to do much of the same in terms of organizing passwords, generating original difficult passwords, etc. Any one have perspective on this or preferences? Thanks in advance.

Edit: thank you everyone for the response. Appreciate your help and I think keychain is sufficient for my needs. But I see the value in 1password.

    Siri Uses

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 07:52 PM PST

I love being in the apple ecosystem, I'm not the person to wander and find other apps to clutter my device. So, with that being the case case it is possible to use Siri to say "open new email" and like that a new window for email shows up on the screen where the app is open.(later we can have that open under the same desktop it was asked in.)

    What is the MTLCompilerService process?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 12:57 PM PST

It seems that every running app on my machine has a subprocess called MTLCompilerService. Does anyone know what this process is? I searched online but couldn't find any relevant information. Thanks! https://imgur.com/a/mDWHB

Best UI apps/modifications for High Sierra if SIP is turned off?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 02:35 PM PST

So i'm looking to customize my OS like back when SIP was not a thing, so far I only found Deskovery for wobbly window animations but that's it, do you guys know any cool UI modifcations like themes/animations or maybe some kind of launchers, maybe? If that's a thing like in Linux you know, thanks for your answers!

    iMessage Name Change

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 01:37 PM PST

I recently changed a contact's name, and this is reflected in the contacts app on my MacBook and iPhone, as well as the iMessenger on my phone, but not on my Mac. I've tried restarting the app and restarting my computer to no avail. Clicking the person's name will bring me to the correctly named contact. I'd rather not delete my conversation history with them. Any tips?

Boot camp: "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition"

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 12:44 PM PST

I'm unfamiliar with MacOS and I'm using my only available computer(my wife's Mac)to make make my usb bootable with windows 10 iso on it so I can reinstall windows on my pc. I'm getting this message when boot camp starts.

"The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition"

Although this message comes up I am still able to pic the iso file and boot camp starts to copy the window files. It seems to stop copying around halfway through. I was wondering if this has to do with the message that I'm getting.

What settings/changes do you implement to make spotlight faster?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 12:02 PM PST

Yes yes - spotlight sucks but I'm curious to see suggestions, I miss the speed of Alfred but I don't want the extra features/configuration/startup delay. I'm testing the experience of keeping as vanilla and as simple an install on Sierra, thanks.

Any virtual mixers for Mac OS?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 10:46 AM PST

I'm going to be doing some group broadcasting, teaching, and podcasting for my students. This is my first time gonna be doing that with a Mac since my PC couldn't work properly. I used a program called Voicemeeter Banana and I can't seem to find an alternative for Mac OS. I just wanted to mix my microphone--add more depth, throw some audio from a soundboard app to my listener(s). Any suggestions?

Switching login creds from list names to type names appears to remove root access?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 07:30 AM PST

I was in users and groups trying to fix some issues in a new user account I made with admin rights. For some reason I had to type my password in every time I wanted to move or delete a file. When I changed the settings to write uname and pword it wiped out my admin privileges. Couldn't make any new accounts or do anything through terminal. I kept pressing the check box to add admin privileges back to my account and it kept telling me I had to restart. So I restarted and have lost all admin privileges. So obviously I need to do a clean install but this is either a big bug or I got an interesting virus somehow.
