What is the most efficient way to find and remove iPhoto duplicates

    Posted: 12 Jan 2018 08:16 PM PST

I'm trying to help my mom get started using photos instead of iPhoto. To do this though her computer needs more room. I know for a fact in iPhoto there is at least 40-50gb of duplicates. This would free up enough room for photos to do its thing. Short of deleting lots of photos, even though they're backed up multiple places, what's the best way to find and remove these duplicates. Mid 2012 MacBook all up to date.

Edit: if it helps here is a list of apps tried:

    Duplicate manager pro.
    Photo sweeper.
    Duplicate photo cleaner

    Reverse partition

    Posted: 12 Jan 2018 08:29 PM PST

I had a partitioned HD in my mid 2012 MacBook pro to run windows on bootcamp. I recently upgraded to a SSD and bought a case to use my former HD as an external HD. I tried using disk utility to erase the partition and wipe the HD but the partition is still sort of there. It is a 500GB drive and it still shows that I have only 425GB of space available (I had 75GB partitioned for windows) I would like to recover the rest of the 75GB for use.

How to I specify block allocation size when I format a drive?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2018 02:36 PM PST

In windows, it's a drop down, but let's say I want to format an 8 TB backup drive of a 3x2 TB RAID 0 array with disk utility, how can I select either block allocation size or stripe size?

Ideally, I'd like a maximum >= 128 kb block allocation size for the 8 TB drive and a 64 kb stripe size for the RAID 0.

I'm wondering what the options are in both Disk Utility GUI and terminal diskutil commands.

Mac OS X High Sierra. All apps shutdown suddenly.

    Posted: 12 Jan 2018 09:03 PM PST

I have a 2016 MacBook Pro. Lately, I've been having a problem with all open apps just quitting. Strangely, if I have an iTerm shell open, it asks if I want to shut down and if I hit cancel it stays open. I have Alfred installed and it's like I just used the command "Quit All Apps". Everything just suddenly shuts down. I can reopen everything if I want to. The system itself doesn't crash. I've been looking through the logs and find a bunch of activity around the times of the crash, but most of it looks normal.

I have noticed Chrome updating in the background, but that might just be coincidence since I do a lot web development work, so it's open a lot. Anyone else run into this problem?

    Is it possible?

    tvOS 11.2.1 is unusable

    Posted: 12 Jan 2018 04:13 PM PST

A few weeks ago I updated my Apple TV (the model is the one prior to the current gen) to the newest version and now its nearly unusable. Programs crash constantly, I've tried Netflix, Prime Video, and CBC, they all crash repeatedly when I try to start streaming something. On top of that, on occasion (after a program has crashed a few times) my remote seems to stop working. It keeps re-connecting constantly and it seems as though the gestures are reversed (up goes down, left goes right, etc.)

    What I've tried:

    • Restarting multiple times

    • Updating (on latest version)

    • Different remote (both charged and paired correctly)

It sometimes just seems to crash while on the home screen, go black for a few seconds and return to the home screen.

Any tips on how to fix this before I just order an Amazon Fire Stick or Google Chromecast?

coconutBattery iPhone 6 reading vs. Apple Genius' battery diagnostic tool

    Posted: 12 Jan 2018 07:40 PM PST

Hey all! Not sure if any of you guys would know this, but figured it's worth a shot. My question is, how does Apple's battery diagnostic tool come up with a percentage of battery health? I ask because I brought a relative's nearly 3 year old iPhone 6 to Apple for a new battery after she experienced poor battery life for the past few months. coconutBattery showed the battery to be at 55.9% design capacity after 560 cycles (see https://imgur.com/a/9W1m3) but when we brought it to the store, the (very unpleasant) genius basically accused us of wasting her time because Apple's tool showed that the battery was at "83% health and totally fine." Just curious as to how Apple's tool comes up with this number.

Thanks in advance for the info!

    Weird flashing spots on iMac

    Posted: 12 Jan 2018 03:46 PM PST

    27" Mid 2011 iMac 12 GB 1333 MHz DDr3 AMD Radeon HD 6670M 512MB OSX 10.9.5

I have this weird issue with my iMac. I get these multi-colored spots flashing all around my screen. Sometimes it's not so bad, infact it will go away for weeks at a time. But, sometimes it gets really intense. I had my graphics card replaced a few years ago and this started happening (mildly) a few weeks later. I didn't bother taking it back because I need the computer at work and hate to be without it.

One interesting detail is that it won't start to do it until I click a user icon on the login screen. When the login screen is up it will be normal indefinitely. As soon as I click a user icon, the spots will start flashing. If I click the back arrow, the spots that are there will stop flashing then resume flashing when I click an icon again. I assume that something in the graphics card kicks in as soon as you go to log in. It also doesn't do it when you're in recovery mode.

I guess my biggest hope is that there's a bad connection on the graphics card rather than it being a bad card. Has anyone ever seen this issue before?

    Thanks

TBMBP - Wifi connects, Safari says I am Offline.

    Posted: 12 Jan 2018 07:03 PM PST

This is a bit of a weird one and it probably is something easy I haven't tried. My MacBook Pro connects to wifi just fine, however safari won't connect because my device is 'offline'. I can renew DHCP and that come back just fine, I get an assigned IP, and have even tried redoing the DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

My computer connects just fine when it is wired in, and it also works when wirelessly tethered to my phone.

    Has anyone else experienced this?

    iPad Stuck In Loop

    Posted: 12 Jan 2018 06:58 PM PST

Hello, My iPad Air was jailbroken and running IOS 10 I believe. I tried restoring to get rid of the Jailbreak and get IOS 11 but now it is stuck in a bootloop where it shows a constant loading bar with the Apple Logo until it dies. When I plug it, it just continues until it dies again and powers back on in a constant loop. When I try to put it in DFU mode or recovery, it just dies again. How can I fix this?

    Thanks!

iPhone 6+ constantly asking me to enter iCloud password for an email that isn't mine

    Posted: 12 Jan 2018 03:05 PM PST

edit/update: So I removed all of the songs that had this email attached to it, deleted them from my computer from all locations, and then synced my phone. There is no music at all on my phone and those songs aren't in my iTunes library anymore but it's still asking me to put in the password for his email.

I recently (in October) ordered a preowned iPhone 6+ from Boost mobile. It works just fine, except it constantly prompts me to enter the password for an email that I don't recognize. It's someone's email @aim.com that they must use for iCloud, but it's not even a little familiar to me.

It's extremely annoying because the only thing I can do is hit cancel. I've tried signing in and out of iCloud on my phone, signing in and out on iTunes, and making it so that none of my music is synced between the two (I was thinking maybe it was because I might have had a song on my phone that was purchased by someone else, I don't know). Nothing so far has worked.

HELP: [[-bash: sudo: command not found]]

    Posted: 12 Jan 2018 02:23 PM PST

I'm on a MacBookPro running 10.13.2, with 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB of memory (ask if you need more details)

I'm trying to disable the built-in keyboard, using a command that starts "sudo kextunload". I keep getting "-bash: sudo: command not found" (the 3 key is malfunctioning; either it doesn't work, or spontaneously spits out hundreds of 3's at a time.)

I'm using an app called KARABINER to try and disable the keyboard, but it's still spitting out a string of 3's sometimes?!

    Someone suggested i type

    su -

to see what happens, but then all i get is

-bash: su -: command not found

he shrugged and said, "sorry, that's all i know."

    What am I doing wrong?

FWIW, the full command I'm trying to execute is:

    sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBTopCase.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBTCKeyboard.kext/

    I Need Desperate Help

    Posted: 12 Jan 2018 05:29 PM PST

I updated my OS, and saw that I couldn't use Terminal (would quit before it finished opening), so I restarted my computer, and held Cmd+R, tried to reinstall the OS, and failed. Then, I checked my Macintosh HD disk in the Disk Utility, and it said it needed to be repaired. I tried to repair it and it told me Error Code 8, and that I needed to back up my files and erase the drive. Now my computer won't turn on unless I use the Cmd+R area. How do I back up my disk? I have a Thunderbolt cable and another Mac available. Is there another way to fix this?

Edit: It's an early 2011 MacBook Pro. To be clear, I have not successfully repaired the disk or backed it up yet. Anything helps. I'm desperate to get this thing working.

Wifi keeps disconnecting every time I lock and unlock my iPod while I am at school

    Posted: 12 Jan 2018 05:08 PM PST

When I try to use my iPod 6 at school I have to log in to a wifi. That seems normal. But having to every time I lock and unlock my iPod is very annoying! I've asked people at my school if it happens to them, and they say no. Is this a bug, or is it my iPod? My version is 11.2.1. This only happens at school, and not my house.

Is the MD760LL screen assembly compatible with the MBA mid2012?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2018 02:44 PM PST

Hi, i crashed my MacBook Air 13' mid2012 A1466 screen, and i've been looking for a replacement.

I found that the MD760LL (661-7475) screen display assembly (from 2014 MBA) is way cheaper than the MD231LL (the 2012 one), both being A1466.

Will the MD760LL (661-7475) screen display assembly work with my MacBook Air 13' mid2012 A1466? Is it compatible?

    Thanks!

Is there a keyboard shortcut for "cleaning up" items in a folder?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2018 08:35 AM PST

My desktop and folder system often goes out of wack over the course of the week because, naturally, things get downloaded and shifted around.

I typically use the "clean up" options that are available when you right click to organize everything. Having to right click and select which option to use for every folder however, (either clean up selection or clean up by...name, data, size, and etc.) is tedious.

Is there any way to bind this function to a keyboard shortcut? I don't mind using 3rd party programs.

    Thanks for the help!
