I'm no longer admin on my Macbook Pro - someone called root is. Any idea how I can revert this change?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 11:59 AM PST

I created a post earlier today, trying to explain the problem. On reccomandation from a user trying to help me out, I have decied to ask for help once again. The original thread can be found here. Shoutout to /u/mythicalmammoth for trying to help an idiot on his computer.

The problem is this: I wanted to change my user account name, and went into System Preferences -> Users and Groups, and rightclicked my account name in the top right corner of the window. From there, I changed my account name, and restarted the computer.

Now I can't do anything that requires admin access, because my user name is no longer the admin username. Somehow the computer changed my admin name, but not my user name, so now my user name is just set to "root", which I understand is some sort of basic-computer-lockdown-shit.

Any help is greatly appreciated, as I really would hate having to reboot the entire Macbook to factory settings.

    3D Touch Issues?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 06:59 PM PST

I've had an iPhone X since day one. About two weeks ago I started having 3D Touch issues where it'll randomly stop working for a period of time and then randomly come back. It's progressively gotten worse and I'd say it only works for about 60% of the day now. Restarts don't usually work, you kinda just have to wait it out until it decides to come back. Has anyone else had this issue?

Accidentally turned off iMessage, now it won’t let me turn it back on?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 12:59 PM PST

I've restarted the phone, signed in and out of iTunes, not sure what the problem is... whenever I try to toggle the iMessage setting back on it just says: "iMessage unavailable. Turn on cellular data or use WiFi to set up iMessage."

My cellular data is already on... please help.

Edit: I managed to fix it by putting my phone on airplane mode and connecting to a family member's personal hotspot instead. Apparently it just wasn't recognizing my cellular or something.

iMac display doesn't wake up after target display mode.

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 09:39 PM PST

I have an iMac that I use regularly as a second display for my work macbook air. Lately, once my macbook falls asleep, target display seems to turn off, but my iMac display does not turn back on. I know the computer is on since I can hear keyboard related sounds, but I end up having to do a hard reboot of the iMac to get the display back.

Does anybody know what is going on here?

So I'm an idiot and spilled soda on a new Macbook Pro...how do I fix my keys?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 05:49 PM PST

During a particularly frenzied all-night work session a couple months ago I stupidly knocked over a coca-cola onto my 15" Macbook Pro (the one with the touch bar). Having a deadline the next day, after sopping it up I gambled and turned it back on to continue working. It's still working fine. The problem is that a large number of my keys are now very sticky. I was in the Apple store for something unrelated today and asked about it. They said they would replace the keyboard because it's under warranty, but wouldn't if it was due to liquid damage. The same repair without warranty is about $500. They also warned me against trying to take the keys off to clean them myself.

    So basically...what should I do?

Should I try taking the keys off myself to clean? The technician mentioned they had a special tool, is this available anywhere? Should I take it to Apple (I have Applecare) or will they be able to tell right away the cause of the issue? Will this leave me with a $500 bill and my entire AppleCare voided?

How to Fix a Connector Pin?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 09:34 PM PST

I have a MacBook Pro 17" (mid-2009, Model A1297). I have successfully replaced the battery three times in the past.

Today, as I attempted to plug in a new battery, two of the thirteen pins in the battery connector on the main logic board got bent. Though I was extremely cautious and careful in trying to bend them back straight using tiny tweezers, they both broke off.

My options don't appear good. As I see it, I could buy a new logic board (which appear to be about $430+ on Amazon); or I could go to someplace like MicroCenter and let them fix it for a $ amount I can only imagine.

Are there any other viable options? For example, is it possible to de-solder the old battery connector off the logic board and solder on a new one (assuming one could find a replacement connector)?

    Please help with any ideas.

    Thanks

Which M.2 SSD Adapter do I use - Early 2014 Macbook Air.

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 09:19 PM PST

    Hey all!

Just trying to find a compatible M.2 adapter for the Early 2014 Macbook Air.

    MD760LL/B - A1466 - 2632

After looking - it doesn't seem like I can find one compatible with the 2632.

I did find this site - but doesn't seem like it's accurate?

    http://eshop.sintech.cn/ngff-m2-pcie-ssd-card-as-2013-2014-2015-macbook-ssd-p-1139.html

If someone can point me towards on - preferably on Amazon, that'd be great.

    MAYBE this one on Ebay?

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/M-key-M-2-SSD-Adapter-for-2013-2014-2015-MACBOOK-Air-A1465-A1466-Pro-A1398-A1502/112615200702?hash=item1a386397be:g:rjkAAOSw63FaN5CK

    Would still prefer Amazon though.

A lot of these say they don't support nVME M.2 - but that first URL mentions that nVME works. So..

    Thanks! :)

Website will load on iPhone and iPad but not Mac

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 03:10 PM PST

I moved a web domain a week ago but they only moved the DNS yesterday. It still won't load on my Mac. I have checked DNS propagation and it should have propagated here by now.

    • it does load on my iPad (using WiFi)
    • it does load on my iPhone (using WiFi)
    • it does not load on Safari, Firefox or Chrome on my Mac (using the same WiFi)

I can see the page if I load through a proxy on my Mac. I have flushed the DNS and rebooted multiple times but it hasn't helped.

I have also switched the DNS on my router to Google DNS (though this shouldn't be an issue since the iPad and iPhone are connecting through the router fine and finding the site.

    What is going on?

When I download a playlist from an iMac to an iPhone, it downloads the playlist twice.

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 03:08 PM PST

Furthermore, when I try to delete the unwanted duplicate, the other is also deleted.

Allow me to explain my specific situation a little further.

I imported three CDs into iTunes on my iMac. Two of these were parts 1 and 2 of an album. I added the two parts into one playlist and downloaded it onto my iPhone. For the second album, I made it into a playlist, so that I could add the album art, which I also did to the first playlist.

Now, in my Music app I see five playlists - two playlists with the album art (what I want) and three playlists (one per CD) without the album art (which I do not want). However, when I delete the unwanted playlists from my phone, the ones I want also get deleted.

Is this just a curse of playlists which I have to live with? Is there any way around it?

Apologies if I haven't been clear enough or haven't included enough details, please let me know if this is the case.

    Thanks in advance.

Error when trying to run internet recovery on MacBook Pro

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 08:46 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

I recently had my hard drive replaced. Like an idiot, I cheaped out and didn't have the shop set it up for me. Went home and realized I had to start my MacBook in recovery mode.

However when I attempt to run internet recovery, i log into my wifi and it connects for a second until I get an error screen where literally all it says it to go to apple.com/support and has the code "-3403F" and that's all I can do, other than shut it down again.

Looking for some advice to get it up and running again. Ideally it doesn't include phoning the shop again as I didn't have a great experience with them.

This is a 2010 MacBook Pro.

    Thanks in advance!

I have background app refresh off. Why are chrome and my work app using so much battery in the background?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 08:44 PM PST

Here's what I'm talking about. I use the top app for work, so I blurred it out in case someone wouldn't appreciate that. Anyway, I don't see why they would be using so much battery in the background. Chrome has used almost as much battery in the background as on the screen. What's going on?

I have an iPhone 7 on iOS 11.2.1.

The other day in very very hot weather my laptop screen cracked as I was watching Netflix. I went into the store and made an appointment for tomorrow but they told me I'll have to replace the entire screen for 700$. This seems excessive for something I didn't do!

I just received my Airpods today. Some questions.

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 08:31 PM PST

    1. Upon checking there are tiny dusts inside the case. Is this bnew? The plastic when opened was perfect same as when I unboxed my iphones and ipads.

    2. My airpods' firmware was latest. Thought it should be something like 3.5ish. How come it is updated already?

    3. I registered it on Apple website using my itunes account. I put purchased date Jan. 11, 2018. It gave me a warranty end date of Dec 29,2018. Why is this?

    Apple pay freezes my phone...

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 08:23 PM PST

Hey all, I just setup my apple pay, and I've been using it when the seller has the ability to accept it. However, every time I use it, I can only open my phone once using the home button and then it freezes on the home screen or whatever screen was running before I locked it last. I have to restart my phone every time I use apple pay. Does anyone have any advice, experience, or help with this?

For students, can the iPad replace a computer?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 09:39 AM PST

    Hey!

I'm considering buying an iPad with the keyboard accessory. It's very portable, and it seems like it's good for productivity: I like to sit down and focus on what I have to do, but sometimes my computer wants all the attention with unsolicited upgrades, broken drivers, virus scans and so on.

I'm in college. I browse the web and use the Office suite a lot. I also program (more like a hobby, not serious work). Do you guys think that an iPad is good for my use case? Did anyone replace a computer with an iPad?

    Thanks in advance.

Using a mid-2009 MacBook Pro after security updates are no longer provided?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 08:01 PM PST

Currently using a MacBook Pro. Everything runs fine, though I'll need to replace the battery soon.

I know that Apple will no longer have any security updates for the particular model that I'm using by this fall. How many more years can I safely get out of this laptop, given a lack of security updates from Apple?

Replaced failed drive on iMac 27" 2011 model - now fans are not reacting to temperature

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 02:58 PM PST

I had a failed Seagate 1TB drive on my 2011 iMac that has been close to failure and finally died a few weeks ago. I managed, via eBay, to procure a WD 1TB drive that had been extracted from a near identical iMac. Today I successfully replaced the drive but now, after around 5 mins of usage, the fans begin to operate near full capacity and the only way to slow them if through Macs Fan Control.

It's worth noting that I specifically chose to replace with another iMac drive to prevent the temperature sensor issue for replacing a HDD in a 2011 iMac. I get an accurate temperature reading for the drive in Mac Fan Control so can only assume the sensor is working but that the fans are not responding accordingly?

Has anybody else experienced this issue?

Brand new MBP cant play a video off of external drive

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 06:41 PM PST

I have a new 2017 MBP (i5/16gb/512gb SSD) and a 2tb external drive connected with videos and pictures on it. Using a HooToo hub powered with apple us c charger that came with laptop

On my old Mac mini, I am able to play video from the external drive through QuickTime with zero issues. Of course it would buffer in the beginning, it is a 7200rpm external drive and USB 2.0 on the Mac, but after a couple of seconds it was perfect.

Now with this laptop, QuickTime will crash if I try to play a video from my external drive. It also caused the entire drive to unmount. One time I was able to play part of a video but lots of buffering. Both computers are running the same version of macos btw

Anyone have any troubleshooting tips? I think it's either the hub or a software issue. I may pick up a usb c to USB a adapter to see if it's just too many things plugged into the hub at one time (HDMI, kvm switch, this external drive)

    Thanks!

Trying to install High Sierra from El Capitan, error while installing and now computer cannot boot.

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 02:53 PM PST

This is on my mother's Imac (2010). I did not set the computer up all those years ago, but I don't believe there's a backup. (hindsight is 20/20 yes obviously the computer should've been running time machine back ups).

This error is not uncommon and I've scoured the forums trying various fixes but have come up short. Apple support was no help at all.

High Sierra downloaded successfully but during install I got this error:

The path /System/Installation/Packages/OSInstall.mpkg appears to be missing or damaged.

Restarted several times to no avail. Cannot restart into safe mode. I can restart into recovery mode (command + R) and tried just reinstalling OS El Capitan but when it comes time to select the disk to install OS X to, nothing appears. Disk utility shows a mounted harddrive.

Anybody know how to solve this? Is there any way for me to backup the system as it is now? I have access to my macbook pro and created a usb boot drive, but I believe that would erase all her data, which is unacceptable. The data is more valuable than the computer to her.
