Posted: 01 Nov 2017 06:28 PM PDT While watching Mr.Mobile's hands-on video, I noticed that the settings panel for "FaceID and Passcode" has a fourth option, aside from the traditional three. The fourth option is Safari Autofill Now, I haven't seen this feature in action but one could imagine that the device will show a button below the keyboard (or use the key button above the keyboard) that will enter log in info that's saved in iCloud Keychain , and to authenticate, your face will be used. Current devices sort of do this with TouchID (it allows you to enter iCloud Keychain from the key button I referred to above), but FaceID could skip this step and just fill it in when it authenticates you. I guess we will find out on Friday how this exactly works. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Nov 2017 04:27 PM PDT Calling it now. Even tho FaceID probably works with like 99% of sunglasses anyways (correct me if I'm wrong), I have to admit it would make me feel more confident purchasing new sunglasses, especially online. [link] [comments] |
Got to play with the iPhone X a little today Posted: 01 Nov 2017 01:56 PM PDT https://imgur.com/gallery/cihMV So my friend is a store manager for T Mobile and brought me an iPhone X to play with today. My first impression, wow this thing is small. But the screen size absolutely makes up for it. The screen is incredibly clear and the phone is crazy fast. I was honestly impressed. Makes me even more excited to get one on Friday! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 Nov 2017 06:17 PM PDT are airpods truly worth it? i've been on the fence about buying them for some time now, i tend to work out a lot so i guess they would be good for that. and with college i listen to music on the go, i'm just not sure. in what scenarios do you guys enjoy your airpods the most? The iPhone X Has a New Ringtone Called 'Reflection' Posted: 01 Nov 2017 08:27 AM PDT |
Posted: 01 Nov 2017 04:20 PM PDT On September 11th I was supposed to get my replacement iPhone 7 Plus. I was waiting at the house all day and it never came so I checked the FedEx tracking number and it said it was delivered at noon AND signed by someone whose name was NOT on the package. So they delivered it to the wrong address AND let someone whose name wasn't on the package, sign for it and keep it. That person didn't do the right thing and decided to keep it instead of drop it off at my house. I called FedEx that same night and they said they would contact the driver to see what happened. When they called me back they said "The package could not be located" and to contact Apple. So I contacted Apple live chat and they said they would call FedEx and see what happened. When Apple called me they said "FedEx CONFIRMED that the package was delivered". Yes. The package was delivered but they keep ignoring that it was delivered to the wrong house and signed by the wrong person. So I kept trying to explain it to them over a few weeks and finally got in contact with a "Senior Advisor" and they told me that the last person to handle my case did not follow "protocol" and that they would launch another investigation and get back to me. This is the e-mail I received. https://i.imgur.com/2p7xMak.png Yes it was a month ago. I called the number and extension provided to get an update and my call was never answered. Then I get this e-mail 2 weeks later https://i.imgur.com/axNotY5.png I did advanced replacement, which means they send me a new iPhone and once I get it, I mail in my old one with the box that comes with the shipment. Apple is now CHARGING me the full price for an iPhone 7+ because I never sent my phone back in the box that I NEVER GOT. So 3 months later I'm out a broken iPhone 7+ (seen here https://i.imgur.com/IXae0Ge.png ), $940 seen here https://i.imgur.com/aHoa5zK.png , AND a replacement 7+ that I never got. [link] [comments] |
Exclusive iPhone X Ringtone "Reflection" Posted: 01 Nov 2017 10:19 AM PDT An hour or so ago I was browsing r/Apple when I saw people talking about an exclusive iPhone X ringtone, however I saw no copies floating around anywhere online, and I was curious as to what it sounded like, so I decided to pull up iPhone X's iOS 11.1 GM from here and rummage through the ringtones. It didn't take long since I already knew the name. You can all grab a copy of the ringtone here. It sounds so fresh, I love it. Edit: For those of you who want to set it as your ringtone (like I did) however aren't anywhere near a computer, there's a guide posted a while back on how to add custom ringtones using only Garageband for iOS. For those of you who are wondering how big 16:9 videos are on iPhone X Posted: 01 Nov 2017 01:05 PM PDT Alright so I'm going to get a little mathematical. We know how iPhone 6, 6s, 7, and 8 all carry a 16:9 display that measures at 4.7" diagonal. First, I'm going to find the angle θ of the diagonal, by trigonometry:
To find θ, we can find the inverse:
We can set x = 9, and y = 16. Plug them both in, and:
Now that we have our θ, now we just need to find the width x of iPhone X. To do so, I looked up the specs for iPhone X and found that the display is at a resolution of 1125x2436 pixels, at 458 pixels per inch. Since 1125 is the pixels in the x direction, to find x, we can just do some unit conversion to inches:
The second portion says one inch per every 458 pixels. From that, we find that:
Now that we have all the necessary information, to find the diagonal size that iPhone X displays 16:9 videos at, we can use the trigonometric equation:
The r value is the diagonal we're looking for, so simply rearrange everything like so:
Plug in all the numbers:
If you followed along correctly, you'll find that:
So to answer your questions, iPhone X displays 16:9 videos at 5.0" diagonal. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Nov 2017 07:17 PM PDT I came across this demo taken with the X I CANNOT WAIT to do some film making with this new phone. Edit: I'm well aware that the cinematography is not the same as the camera. I'm excited to have this capable of a camera in my pocket. Nobody thinks this is exactly what your videos will look like directly out of the phone without some clever editing. [link] [comments] |

Suggestion: FaceID shouldn't show notification banners when someone else is using your phone. Posted: 01 Nov 2017 10:45 PM PDT I like banners but always keep it off (via DND) because it is a privacy intrusion when personal messages can be read by other people using your phone while say:
If FaceID detects its me looking at the phone, it should show the banners. What do you guys think? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 Nov 2017 07:34 AM PDT It would be quite convenient if you could have Maps/Netflix/any Safari video in a small PiP window while browsing Reddit or Instagram on your iPhone. I hope Apple adds it in iOS 12, but I'm not holding my breath. [link] [comments] |
For those on the fence between the Apple leather and silicone cases... Posted: 01 Nov 2017 09:05 PM PDT Having now owned both the leather and silicone cases myself, I feel that I can help others choose what's going to be right for them. To do so, I'm going to compare them in 5 categories; style, grip, durability, protection, and feel. If you want to save yourself a bit of a read, just jump to the summary at the bottom for my overall thoughts. Style: This one depends a lot on your personal style. The current color options for the silicone cases are pretty muted, but sometimes Apple will add a fun color to the mix that really stands out. With the leather cases, the colors are always pretty muted. Keep in mind that the leather cases definitely will change color a bit, usually darkening over time. If you're someone who spends a lot of time in a formal setting, I would probably lean towards the leather case just to keep on point with your attire. I would also opt for the leather case if you like a more complex, textured look. If you just prefer a super simple case that maybe adds a bit of color to your iPhone, then the silicone might be more up your alley. I have to go with the leather case here. I don't think that the leather is ever particularly out of place in terms of style and in my opinion, it just seems to get better looking as it wears for at least the first 6 months. Grip: The silicone cases are very grippy. If you sweat a lot and run with your phone in your hand, the grippy silicone case will keep your phone from slipping out of your hand and skidding across the pavement. The problem with the silicone cases is that they really have a bit too much grip. I find it difficult to pull my phone out of my jeans pocket without nearly turning my pocket inside out. With a suit jacket, it's hard to slide the phone into a the jacket pocket without making it awkward. If your phone is almost never inside of a pocket, then probably not a big deal, but otherwise you might want to reconsider just because of this factor alone. The brand new leather cases actually aren't super grippy. They feel pretty slick actually. These things seem to just get better over time though. In my experience, it took a week or two until the leather case started to build up some grip. I'm not sure if that's because the leather pulled some moisture from the humidity in the air, or if it's because of the oil in my hands, but they definitely get better grip over time. Durability: Neither of these cases lasts forever. I had the leather case for my iPhone 6. It definitely lasted the 2 years that I used my iPhone 6, but some of the leather started to basically disappear from wear on the corners. I dropped the phone on pavement a couple times during those 2 years and each time a small chunk of leather would get torn or flake off, but after another couple weeks of wear in my pocket those missing chunks would sort of disappear and be hardly noticeable. The silicone case really has a longevity problem. It's only been almost a year since I got my silicone case for my iPhone 7 and each of the corners has worn down to the point that I can see the internal plastic of the case. The bottom corners are actually peeling off at this point. I hope that they fixed this with the new cases this year, but I wouldn't bet on it. The case stands up to falls on pavement pretty well. I haven't had any major damage done to the case by a drop on pavement. Again, I would give the leather the edge here. After a year it was still relatively unscathed and looked really good from the natural wear. Protection: Ehh... this is kind of a toss up. Neither of these cases will offer the kind of protection that you get from an otterbox. I would imagine they both perform relatively similar. The internal construction of these cases is a thin plastic, which is the same for both cases as far as I know. The silicone case might perform slightly better, but it's really not a thick enough silicone to absorb much more shock than the leather case. Feel: This is probably the most important category for anyone considering one of these two cases. I've really come to hate my silicone case, and most especially for it's feel alone. At first, it has a soft texture that kind of reminds you of the sport bands for the Watch. However, it has this cringy feel to it that you only notice after using it where it feels almost oily and gummy, and even though it has a tight grip, the phone tends to slide in my hand while I'm holding it from the sides watching a video or reading or an article. In other words, if I'm not actively moving my hand, the gross feeling of this case really becomes apparent. The leather case really doesn't have these problems. Like I mentioned before, it starts off feeling kind of slippery in the hand, but after a couple weeks of use, it should have a soft feel with more grip that doesn't slide in your hand such that you need to adjust the phone every few seconds. Definitely a win on the "feel" side for the leather case. Summary: Given the 5 categories I touched on, it's clear that the leather case either meets or exceeds what the silicone case put up. I originally purchased the silicone case for my iPhone 7 after using the leather case for 2 years on my iPhone 6 just to try something different, but I really have a passionate hate towards this case now. It feels gross, it picks up every piece of dust or crumb on the table, looks much worse than when I bought it, and really I have no idea why I haven't just gone naked with my jet black 7 at this point. If you're caught up on these two, I would highly recommend dropping the extra $10 for the leather case, but if you can afford to buy both, then you might as well give them both an in-depth try and take back the one you don't like. Hope this helped! [link] [comments] |
Control center calculator shouldn’t open the calculator app Posted: 01 Nov 2017 06:07 AM PDT It would be great if 3D touching on the calculator icon brought up a temporary calculator like with the Apple remote. Maybe keep it to just the 4 function, with a button to open the real app, but way too many times I've just needed to do a quick multiplication and tried to 3D Touch the icon as if it will open a temporary calculator. Apple CEO Tim Cook to Appear on NBC Nightly News Tonight Posted: 01 Nov 2017 01:09 PM PDT |
Posted: 02 Nov 2017 12:25 AM PDT A post earlier today got me thinking and doing some math on exactly how big videos would be on the new iPhone X compared to the more familiar 8 and 8+. After calculating out all the sizes, I decided a visual aid would be more helpful. I actually ended up doing it in Solidworks to make sure I was not messing my dimensions up in paint or something. I'm sure there was an easier way but that's life. Here are the numbers those came from: A 16:9 video will be: A 21:9 anamorphic widescreen video will be: So you can see that for 16:9 content, the X falls between the iPhone 8, and 8 plus (Being a little closer to the plus) For 21:9 content it spanks them all handily. You only lose 0.23 inches of vertical and no horizontal. You of course lose the notch and maybe a tiny bit of the corners from the iPhone X screen shape. In the image above I basically guesstimated the notch dimensions. If anyone has the actual drawings of its exact dimensions let me know. Until then this is close enough since I did the model over a scaled picture of the actual phone. Also, while the scale is correct throughout the image, both between the phones AND between the aspect ratios, the image obviously won't represent the exact size in real life since everyone's monitor is a different resolution. Yes I have too much time on my hands waiting for my new phone. [link] [comments] |
