Posted: 30 Nov 2017 03:40 PM PST I'm an Apple Consultant. That means I'm the guy who gets called out to your house on Thanksgiving when you accidentally delete all the photos and videos of your kids you've taken since they were born (true story). To be fair, I tend to see the worst case scenarios, but I've been doing this job officially for almost ten years and this is what I can tell you: 1) You will only find out your backup hasn't been working as soon as you try and restore something from it. People will tell you to try and restore a file from your backup periodically. Ain't nobody got time for that. Which leads to... 2) You should have more than one type of backup. Time Machine is one method, another could be SuperDuper, Carbon Copy Cloner, or Backblaze. I really love Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) because I've found it to be easy to use, easy to configure, and super reliable. 3) You should have a backup in more than one location. I've had clients who were hit by fire and flood. In both cases, the only thing that kept it from being a total loss was having a second off-site backup. 4) iCloud (and the cloud in general) is not a backup! If you don't have physical control over your data, then you could lose it at any time. I have some clients who are panicking because they've been using Crashplan as an on-line storage drive, and now they risk the possibility of losing all of their historical data because Crashplan won't support home users anymore. Hard drives are cheap. Setting up a backup takes hardly any time at all. If you're not the kind of guy who does a backup on a regular basis, invest in a Time Capsule or at least a cloud backup (preferably both). [link] [comments] |
iMac kicks out Mac OSX CD when trying to upgrade Posted: 30 Nov 2017 06:48 PM PST We recently purchased a new 2017 iMac to replace our dying 2008 iMac. After we transferred everything to the new iMac, I wiped the old iMac because we had planned on selling it. We ended up deciding to keep it but had no OS to run so I got in touch with Apple Support for them to send out an OS. As of last week, I installed OS X Mountain Lion using the disc they sent me and everything has been running smoothly so far. However, I was looking to upgrade to OS X Snow Leopard with the install CD we purchased a while back (we had used this to upgrade the computer before and it worked fine then) but I'm running into some issues. Following the instructions on the install CD box, I put in the disc and open up the disc on the desktop. I follow the on-screen instructions for the installation and it begins to install. After maybe 20 seconds or so, I can hear the CD drive boot down, followed by the computer ejecting the install disc. I've tried restarting the computer and booting it while holding "c" but it still ejects the disc. I'm not sure what's going wrong here but some help would be very appreciated! If you know what I can do to fix it, please let me know! [link] [comments] |
Why Does My "Show Desktop" Mouse Shortcut No Longer Work? Posted: 30 Nov 2017 09:45 PM PST "For years, I've assigned the expose/mission control command "Show Desktop" to the fourth button on my mouse. All of a sudden, quite recently, the command has stopped working. I know it's not the button because reassiging a different command to the same button works, and assigning "show desktop" to another button fails to succeed. It's not the mouse, because I've tried two other different mice. I've searched for answers to this, and the general conclusion is to delete the "com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist" file. I've done this, and the strange thing is that after restarting the computer the command starts to work again, but not for long. It stops working at a seemingly random time. I haven't figured out if anything triggers this. This is really frustrating because command works flawlessly with my workflow, especally while video editing, and it is starting to become a real pain. So, for the record: The trackpad gesture to "show desktop" works. The keyboard shorcut F11 to "show desktop" works. Reassigning "show desktop" to any other mouse button DOES NOT work. Other commands on the same mouse button DO work. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks. P" Source of this: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5889578?tstart=0 . . . This is the exact question that I have that another person put into words much clearer than I would have. I have to delete the "com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist" file every time if I use that solution. After I put my mac to sleep, I need to delete the plist and restart my mac and reassign button settings. I have a mid-2015 macbook pro, macOS High Sierra Version 10.13.1 Please help Edit: Format [link] [comments] |
Not getting all text notifications Posted: 30 Nov 2017 09:33 PM PST About 3 weeks before the new iPhones were released, I had to replace my (beloved) 6S. I got a 7. For the last month or so, I do not get all my text message notifications, mostly for non-iMessages, but occasionally for iMessages as well. 50% of the time, I get the appropriate notification, 50% there is none. I have tried toggle mute, and changing text sounds (general and specific), rebooting. I have iOS 11.1.2 (15B202), on Verizon. 14.5 gigabytes available storage. has anyone encountered this, or have any advice? Thank you in advance, this sub has been helpful to me in the past. Kernel Panic and repeated crashing on 2015 Macbook air after high sierra install Posted: 30 Nov 2017 05:41 PM PST So starting the other day, my mac started crashing on me for no discernible reason. The first time I had a bunch of tabs open in chrome, so I figured that might have been the issue, but earlier today it crashed while I was doing homework - nothing intense. I figured maybe if I install the next update to high sierra, it might fix itself. Thing is, after the update, or maybe during it(?) my computer crashed. Tried booting up again, but as soon as I log in, I get a quick flash of an error message, and then it just shuts off entirely. I've tried resetting NVRAM a couple similar hard-reset key combinations in an attempt to do the internet recovery (spinning globe icon appears) which I read about on the pinned comment on this youtube video here. The problem from here is that each time I get to the globe icon, the loading bar makes a tiny bit of progress and then my computer crashes again. I can't find anything that says what to do from here. Anyone have experience with this? Kinda need to get this thing up and running again asap since I have finals in a week. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Nov 2017 09:08 PM PST My phone goes to the apple logo screen(like when you turn it on after shutting it off) for a few seconds, then it goes to a black screen. It has been repeating this for ~30 minutes and I can't turn it on. I haven't backed it up in a while, so restoring it isn't an option. Any ideas on what to do? I have ios 11 btw [link] [comments] |
Can't transfer music from old iPhone to new iPhone Posted: 30 Nov 2017 05:15 PM PST So, I bought music on my old phone with a different apple ID. Now, I have a new phone, with a new ID, but I can't get the music that I bought on the other phone with the other ID onto my new phone. I have tried using the old ID on the new phone and downloading the music, then switching back to my new ID, but then I can never play the music. How can I fix this? And I can't just use the old ID, because I have new music on the new ID that would cause the same issue. Thank you for any help you can give! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Nov 2017 08:56 PM PST Spotlight finds songs that I search for but only when they are downloaded to the device. Is there any way around this? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Nov 2017 08:06 PM PST I bought an ACER CB281HK 4K monitor to connect to my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) and I'm having issues with the resolution of both the Retina and external display. When I check About this MAC it says the Built-in-Display is 15.4-inch (2880 x 1800) while the external is 30.5-inch (1920 x 1080) Display Menu shows the LCD at 1440 x 900 and the Acer at 3840 x 2160. I am using the HDMI cable that came with the monitor. [link] [comments] |
Mac and iPhone iCloud not working Posted: 30 Nov 2017 07:46 PM PST I updated to High Sierra 10.13 and ever since, my iMessages have not been sending or refreshing from my Mac. Everything works fine on my iPhone 6S Plus, but literally from my Mac nothing will send, Facetimes won't do anything (dialed my friend, her Facetime didn't get the notification). I don't know what's causing the issue (WiFi is working fine too). One interesting thing to note is that when I switched to tethering my MacBook, it started working again. So I don't really know what's up, does anyone know what's wrong? (I have tried signing in and out of iCloud on both devices, also tried restarting and all other basic troubleshooting) [link] [comments] |
Why on Earth does Safari always get stuck loading? Posted: 30 Nov 2017 07:43 PM PST This is a problem I've had for years. I've always used Safari because I have extensive bookmarks that sync to my phone, but I'm getting ready to switch to Chrome or something if I can't figure this out. It's gotten to the point where about 70% of the time or so on my Macbook, when I open Safari, it straight up won't load webpages. The loading bar get's stuck at maybe 1/15th, and stays there. I have to open and close Safari over and over again to get it to load Facebook. Sometimes I have to shut the computer down. This is Apple's operating system (and I have this problem on my work computer as well, so I know it's not just my personal computer). I expect more. Why the hell does it do this? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Nov 2017 07:19 PM PST The iPad mini 4 was pre owned. i bought it as a temporary upgrade from my iPad 2 32G i bought brand new back in early 2012, it started running into some slow down issues, but i still cannot afford to upgrade my old iPad 2 to a brand new iPad mini 4, so i just bought a pre owned one from a private seller. Owner said it was never opened before but i think he was just lying because there was some obvious signs that the iPad was opened before (serial number on the back housing is different than the ones in settings-general, and i think the housing was replaced before), although i tried not to think about it that much since i am just going to use it as a temporary iPad. So i paid the owner 250 dollars, and i took home the iPad. I set it up on my Apple ID and icloud, tested all the features and surprisingly all of them worked great. Touch id was perfectly fine and very fast and accurate, the stereo speakers, iOs 10 worked great on it, so i assumed it was a great deal (i bought it february so no iOS 11 yet, but i updated it on early october) Fast forward to today, it started running into some problems (i regret buying a used ipad ugghhh). it got stuck on bootloop so i connected to iTunes on my Win8.1 laptop, restored iPad through recovery mode and it says on the iPad could not activate. i used my iPhone 6 for the iOs 11 setup, pointed the camera into the circle thingy, same thing happens. i tried connecting to iTUNES again but now its asking for a SIM card even though its a wifi only model. Downloaded the ios 11.1.2 ipsw file for the iPad mini 4 WIFI only, still asks me to put sim card. i went to the iCloud website on my laptop and the iPad is recognized and it says "iPad mini 4". i checked the serial number on Apple' website, typed in S/N and it says "iPad Mini". Tried other serial checking websites and says iPad mini 1st gen WiFi + Cellular, 16gb Black, even though the ipad mini 4 i have is a gold wifi only, 16gb. Tried the SN on the back housing, since i mentioned before the SN on the back and settings is different, and its the correct one. "iPad mini 4 16gb wifi gold" it is. My ipad is still not activating though, it has been a few days now. is there still hope for this ipad to be fixed, or is it time to get a brand new one? I am currently interested on the 2017 iPad 9.7. [link] [comments] |
Restoring 2004 iPod Mini to factory settings? Posted: 30 Nov 2017 03:24 PM PST I recently found my old 8 gb iPod mini that I must have received over a decade ago. I write music reviews, and I would love to be able to use it to load up new albums I'm sent so I can free up space on my iPhone. However, the iPod is filled with all of the crap I used to listen to in the early 2000s. I would like to completely erase the device. Should be easy enough, right? Apparently not. The device is currently using 7.4 of its available 8 gb with 1,189 songs loaded onto it. Apparently, there is no way to manually reset the iPod without using iTunes. However, when I try to do so on iTunes, an error message reads that it cannot be synced because there isn't enough space available (whether that's on the iPod or the computer, I'm not sure-- picture is attached in link below). The songs show up, but they're grey, I'm unable to delete them, and there's no way to free up any space on my device. I called Apple Support and was on the phone for nearly half an hour with a complete idiot. He was convinced I have an iPod nano (I don't), kept telling me to hold down the top button (there is no top button; there's just a lock switch on this model), and was very obviously just Googling for answers. Altogether just a useless, useless person. From what I've researched, there should be a way to reset the device with the "Summary" option on iTunes, but that doesn't show up for some reason (my options for the device are included in the link below). Basically: Is there any way for me to erase the contents on this iPod? I've tried other computers that might have more space and they're pulling the same shit. Please, please help me. I would really like get this resolved so I can use this device. [link] [comments] |

View an online image's file size (not pixel dimensions) before downloading? Posted: 30 Nov 2017 06:36 PM PST Is this possible? I'm aware of using Inspect Element to get dimensions but wonder if it's possible to see the actual file size (e.g. 2.3MB) without downloading the image? I'm on Sierra 10.12.6, late 2011 MBP. please identify this fsck error Posted: 30 Nov 2017 05:35 PM PST I'm trying to recover some files for a friend. Using the ol' freezer trick I was able to get a LOT of data off the drive, but sadly it won't mount anymore. It appears on the USB 3 bus (it's in a SATA reader) but Disk Utility doesn't see it. Well, the GUI one, terminal sees it fine. I tried fsck and get this back: Executing fsck_hfs (version hfs-366.70.3). volumeType is 0 0000: 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 |................| . . . 01b0: 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 00fe |................| 01c0: ffff eefe ffff 0100 0000 af6d 7074 0000 |...........mpt..| 01d0: 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 |................| . . . 01f0: 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 55aa |..............U.| Any ideas? iTunes performance on high-end devices Posted: 30 Nov 2017 01:47 PM PST So, does anyone else with a 2016/17 MacBook Pro have absolutely terrible performance in iTunes? Especially when expanding albums -- the animation is frozen/blocky and not at all fluid like I expect Apple would like it to be. This is on a 2016 MBP with the upgraded CPU and GPU, so I'm not sure why I would be experiencing performance issues. [link] [comments] |
I've been getting this error since I got my new mac? Posted: 30 Nov 2017 01:45 PM PST Hello! I got a new Macbook Pro near the end of September. Since then, every now and then when I'm watching a video (on multiple sites - Youtube, Vimeo, etc), a black screen with a pause symbol will appear and flash on the screen once or twice a second. The only thing that can get rid of this symbol is refreshing the page. Does anyone know what's up? [link] [comments] |
