Visualizing the Size Difference between the 8/8+/X Posted: 30 Sep 2017 01:48 PM PDT I've seen a lot of discussion about the screen real estate versus one hand/two hand use of the new phones. I'm a very visual person, and so it helps me to visualize what exactly that difference looks like in a simple way, and so I just put together a quick chart that helped me that I wanted to share with this community as well in case anyone might find it helpful. You'll find comparisons for every possible combination of two phones out of those three models, both for overall phone and for the screen. It's interesting to see how close the X screen really comes to the 8+ screen in size. [link] [comments] |

Since most people spend >70% on the browser, I just wanna take a moment to appreciate Safari Posted: 30 Sep 2017 12:41 PM PDT I just upgraded to Safari 11 and wanted to run some benchmarks vs the latest version of Chrome (61.0.3163.100). Safari smokes it in everything. Besides just being fast, there is a lot of intuitive stuff in Safari. Three finger tapping on a link opens a temporary window to preview it which is great for browsing reddit/forums. Swiping back on a newly opened tab closes it. Hitting the URL bar opens a list of your favourite sites. Aesthetically pleasing. Good on battery life. I think it may be safe to say that Safari is the fastest way to browse the web and that should matter to a lot of people considering we're all on the browser most of the time. [link] [comments] |

I’d just like to take a minute to give a shoutout to the iPod classic. Posted: 30 Sep 2017 05:45 PM PDT I got 2 5th generation 80GB iPod classics on launch nearly 10 years ago, both are beat up now, with dings on the corners and scratches galore. But they both still work like new. With 70+ gigs on both of them they lag a little sometimes but they still hold a charge and traveled thousands of miles with me and my family. Just giving Apple and the iPod line a shout-out for being a damn well crafted product that's had some outstanding longevity that I feel was well beyond it's intended lifespan. [link] [comments] |
A visual comparison of the display content areas on the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X Posted: 30 Sep 2017 01:28 PM PDT I made this image in iOS Simulator to compare the screen real estate between the 8, 8 Plus and X screen sizes. Despite the reduced width of the X compared to the Plus, it is able to display marginally more content on screen than the Plus thanks to the taller screen. In comparison, the regular 8 size looks tiny. Additionally, seeing the comparison has helped me appreciate the perceptual advantages of the edge to edge design — it really does 'open up' the application and feel so much more cohesive. EDIT: Here are keyboards, widgets screen and the video experience (on YouTube) on the X. EDIT 2: And landscape mode examples. [link] [comments] |

Apple nailed it with the W1 and AirPods - anecdotal observation Posted: 30 Sep 2017 01:58 AM PDT Yesterday while I was sat on a train I saw someone I recognised (we both commute the same way) sat across the aisle from me. He has wireless earbuds that are the same if not very similar to the Bragi Headphones range, i.e. totally wire-free. Trust me when I say this guy was not the type of person to be buying cheap knock-offs. We're waiting for the train to leave, and I hear his phone playing some music or video. He looks flustered. He takes the Bragi earpieces out, looks at them, frowns, puts them in the case (sidenote: what a huge case compared to the AirPods!) and takes them back out again, but he just can't seem to get them working. He tries one only, then the other only, and seems to be holding down buttons on them at times. At this moment I take out my AirPods, flip the lid, put them in my ears, and away I go, resuming the music I was listening to many hours earlier. Moments later, as we're on the move, I glance over to him again. He's reading a newspaper with wired EarPods in. I guess he gave up. [link] [comments] |
Is anyone's Twitter app notifications on Apple Watch giving a blank icon when they pop up? Posted: 30 Sep 2017 12:23 PM PDT Whenever my Twitter app gives me pop up notifications, it now gives a blank icon when they pop up instead of the Twitter icon. Anyway to fix this? [link] [comments] |
Anyone else getting WiFi constantly disconnected with the new iOS update? Posted: 30 Sep 2017 06:11 PM PDT Every hour I am looking at my phone and the wireless network prompt pops up and i notice that I'm disconnected from my WiFi. This never happens. Is the apple pen too noisy for taking notes in a lecture? Other styluses i had have this issue. Posted: 01 Oct 2017 01:03 AM PDT I'm thinking about upgrading my ipad to an ipod pro. Only because i would like to use the apple pen for taking notes. This is mainly because as far as i can tell, it doesn't make any noise when using. I have an addonit snap and all reviews i could find for other styluses seems to be very noisy. Anyone had this issue? Can you use the apple pen on a cafe and the library without people getting mad? Would love your inputs. [link] [comments] |
I made "SwiftBoard - An iOS Keyboard" | A fully customizable alternate input keyboard extension! Posted: 30 Sep 2017 10:38 AM PDT Hello! Today I am here to introduce SwiftBoard for the public release!
SwiftBoard is an iOS keyboard extension built from the ground up to provide speed, stability and customization. SwitBoard provides every setting and customization option you would expect from a keyboard and much more.
Some of the features SwiftBoard prides itself on
Themes
Privacy Your privacy our top concern with SwiftBoard. Unlike other keyboards, SwiftBoard sends ZERO information to external servers. Every single thing you do or type with SwiftBoard remains on device, making SwiftBoard one of the safest iOS keyboards for your privacy.
Pricing SwiftBoard is available now for free on the App Store. SwiftBoard Pro is available as in app purchase for $1.99, this purchase lets you modify every single theme and setting. For example, although alternate input is enabled on the keyboard for free, you can't customize it without SwiftBoard Pro. Note: Without Pro you can still change the options that are available on the stock iOS keyboard.
Closing Remarks I have poured hundreds of hours into SwiftBoard and I hope that you enjoy using SwiftBoard as much as I have enjoyed creating it for you. Let me know if you have any suggested features or fixes and I will be sure to take a look! If you download and enjoy SwiftBoard PLEASE leave a good rating, a positive review or purchase pro it helps a lot!

Posted: 30 Sep 2017 10:56 AM PDT I can't see how Apple, being the huge company they are, could oversee the severe performance issues that they've left on older devices with this update. In my case, keyboard lag is totally a software issue, and I'm pretty sure many other bugs and general slowness could be avoided too. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Oct 2017 01:05 AM PDT I posted a couple of days ago that I experienced issues with iOS 11 on my iPhone 6. However, I got the tip to factory reset the phone - and to my suprise, the phone works flawlessly now! I take all my complaints back and recommend everyone who experiences issues with iOS 11 to do a complete factory reset! [link] [comments] |
Please, somebody help me make sense of the new dictation in iOS 11. Posted: 30 Sep 2017 02:28 PM PDT Am I the only one having a lot of trouble adapting to the new dictation in iOS 11? I used to be able to seamlessly start dictating in the middle of typing a sentence (and viceversa) by quickly juggling between the mic key, the language key and ANY key on the keyboard. I could simply hit the delete key for a quick correction, then hit the mic key again to have dictation automatically restart after creating a space after the last word or punctuation (if it wasn't already there). Anything but a full stop would be followed by uncapitalized text. Now whenever I hit the mic key the keyboard disappears to leave space to… sound feedback that was already there but now takes more space? For any correction I first have to tap the new keyboard button, which adds a single but very annoying step when you constantly have to move between typing and dictationg. Even waiting for the dictation to stop doesn't bring the keyboard back. And there's one more thing: now whenever I restart dictation after typing, or simply switch language mid-dictation, it alwaysCapitalizes,Even after commas. And doesn't automaticallyCreate a space between words or after punctuation like before, forcing you to pay close attention to where your very tiny cursor is at any given moment. I remember clearly (easy: It was 1 week ago…) when typing and dictation used to work seamlessly together. This and the keyboard button thing really break the flow! Sorry about the rant, but, while there have always been iOS changes that I found questionable, in this case I am not sure where the UI overhaul ends and the bugs start. I also haven't seen many complaints about this so there's still hope there is a new, smarter way to type and dictate that I simply haven't figured out yet. In which case I hope some of you guys can help me! [link] [comments] |
