    iPhone Upgrade Program/Preorder Questions Mega-thread

    Posted: 18 Oct 2017 11:55 AM PDT

    Hey /r/apple!

With less than X days for the iPhone X (See what I did there? I will get out the door once I'm done with this post.), there has been an increase of questions about the iPhone X, buying questions, and etcetera that you guys want answered in preparation for next week.

Please use this mega-thread to ask any questions about the pre-order process, the iPhone Upgrade Program, and anything else you would like to know before the big day.

Any questions that could be asked here will be removed and users will be directed to this thread.

Here is some quick info about the iPhone Upgrade Program (referred to as IUP henceforth):

    • The bank Apple uses for the IUP is Citizens One (US). Barclays in the UK.

    • Here is a table for the prices of the current iPhones (US Price).

    iPhone 8 iPhone 8 Plus iPhone X
    $34.50/month (64GB) $39.50/month (64GB) $49.91/month (64GB)
    $40.75/month (256GB) $45.75/month (256GB) $56.16/month (256GB)
    • AppleCare+ is included in the program

    • You can use IUP online for Sprint, Verizon and AT&T. T-Mobile users have to go to an Apple Store to get on the IUP. UK users don't need to specify their carriers.

    • You're eligible to upgrade to a new iPhone once you've made 12 payments.

    • The program is available only in the United States, United Kingdom and China

iOS 11 is the buggiest i have ever seen any of my iphones

    Posted: 18 Oct 2017 04:36 AM PDT

I'm curious as to how often you guys experience these bugs because they are honestly infuriating and remind me of having an android.

First annoying bug which happens way too often, when i answer a phone call, i cannot head the other person and they can not hear me. When this bug starts happening, it doesn't fix until i reset my phone. another part of this bug is whenever i try to make a phone call, it will not ring. and when i try to adjust the volume on the phone call the volume slider does not show up. very annoying especially since i can't just try making the phone call again, i have to restart

another very annoying bug is, half the time, more often than not actually, the music won't show up on the lock screen, preventing me from changing the volume anywhere outside of the actual app playing the media, wether it be the podcast app, soundcloud, spotify, etc. this one sometimes fixes without me resetting my phone but i usually have to reset for this to fix

the last most universal bug is my phone will freeze up like crazy so many times through out the day, for a couple minutes at a time and seemingly randomly. very annoying.

how common are all three of these issues for anyone else? the freezing one i guess i can kind of forgive but the other two drive me absolutely crazy, especially considering i have an iphone 7 plus

    true tone is really cool!

i saw the demo when i opened up my ipad pro and kinda thought "eh, seems just like a weirder night shift." but after a day of using it in different lighting conditions, i gotta say - i notice it more and can actually see a difference! it really does make the screen colors seem more consistent across different levels of light. well done apple!

iOS 11 Animations "feel" very slow

    Posted: 18 Oct 2017 09:17 PM PDT

    The Problem

Just updated to iOS 11 moments ago and immediately I noticed was how slow the animations felt when opening apps, switching apps and even the weird refocus it has to do whenever you reach the home screen.

This feeling reminds me of the iOS 7 or 8 jailbreak era where I'd jailbreak just to "speed up" the animations.

    The Solution many will "recommend"

Many will just say "why not turn on reduce motion"? Well this makes the iPhone feel absolutely horrible, it's like everything you do becomes a slideshow.

    Opinion:

Of course as with any new iOS I am feeling like my iPhone is getting slower but I hope Apple does resolve this in the near future as downgrading is probably impossible.

[Rant] Honestly iOS 11 and High Sierra are the most buggy release with the least amount of new features in Apple's history

    Posted: 18 Oct 2017 07:26 PM PDT

I can't help but think this is a deliberate move on Apples part to move users to upgrade. Even my 2016 pro 15 fully upgraded is riddled with problems and a 50% slower restart time

Why Apple should make Mac chips: Windows 10 ARM laptops will have multi-day battery life

It would be cool if the iphone X faceID technology could be used to help 3D scan things.

    Posted: 18 Oct 2017 08:22 PM PDT

I recently saw this article (http://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/anglesey-man-designs-sons-bionic-12670585) about a Dad who used an Xbox Kinect to scan his sons arm to accurately 3D print a prosthetic arm. With the iPhone X using similar technology for face detection, it would be so cool for people to be able to use their phone for similar things.

What is the iPhone X's effective resolution?

    Posted: 18 Oct 2017 10:25 PM PDT

The iPhone X uses the same Diamond PenTile technology as the S8, and the diamond layout requires a higher PPI in order to match the same resolution as a traditional RGB stripe (something like green being 1.5x more than the red and blue pixels). Was wondering what the actual resolution when compared to RGB.

Is there a particular reason why iPhone and iPad are still on USB 2.0?

    Posted: 18 Oct 2017 02:23 PM PDT

Is there some technical limitation for upgrade "Lightening" cables to USB 3.x?

Is it even worth questioning at this point now that we have wireless charging?

Will we see the demise of the porthole altogether in the next 1-2 years?

I spy with my little eye... iPhone X's dot projector in action

    Posted: 18 Oct 2017 09:44 AM PDT

Look at the purple/pink blinking emanating from the right side of the notch. It operates on a wavelength invisible to the human eye, but it looks like the camera captured it.

    First instance: 0:10 - 0:18 What's happening: Animojis

Second instance: 0:28 - 0:35 What's happening: Portrait Mode on front camera being used

Third instance: 0:38 - 0:41 What's happening: Face ID verification. The infrared camera on the left side of the notch also blinks momentarily.

    Fourth instance: 0:42 - 0:45 What's happening: Animojis

Fifth instance: 0:58 - 1:02 What's happening: I have no idea, but both the infrared camera and the dot projector blink right before the screen switches off.

And there's more blinking towards the end of the video when Face ID tries to verify the guy's face to unlock the phone, but fails because his face isn't registered.

    Posted: 19 Oct 2017 01:16 AM PDT

Am I the only one who is sick of having the same old ringtones to choose from? Why would Apple not include new ringtones to choose from? All I want are some simple, basic, bleeps and bloops to choose from. Why would they not include this?

Anyone know why Apple Music still hasn’t caught up to Spotify in playlists and such? I like Apple Music but I also love Spotify for finding new bands. Their playlists just seem so much better.

Apple mail apps vs. non-Apple mail apps

    Posted: 18 Oct 2017 01:43 PM PDT

I would dearly love to settle on both Apple's mail clients in both iOS and macOS, I really would, but: (a.) the whole pissing contest with GMail push is a show-stopper for me; (b.) I don't plan to undo 12 years' worth of giving out my Gmail address to people and companies; and (c.) I'm not going through any of the methods I've seen regarding forwarding Gmail to my iCloud account or something like that.

I wish Apple would simply adopt the method used by Airmail, Edison Email, Spark, etc., and let its servers hold the mail and push it to its clients. (I have often heard it said Apple should just do like Microsoft did with Accompli, now Outlook for iOS, and buy one of the better third-party clients. Right now, that would be Edison Email if it had threading for anything other than Gmail, and Edison told me via a reply to a bug report that it's TBD when that'll happen.) After all, I trust Apple's servers to hold my iCloud files; so I'd trust Apple's servers to hold my Gmail for push purposes. I understand Apple's position on this re mail privacy and all that, but I don't grasp the difference between holding one's files and holding one's mail. Maybe somebody can ELI5.

EDIT: As correctly pointed out below, I was wrong about how those third-party clients do it. They use your credentials.
