We spent a year asking for M1 iPads to do more

    Posted: 13 Jun 2022 03:00 PM PDT

I'm grumpy like the rest of you. Surely Apple could've designed Stage Manager for iPadOS to run in a limited capacity on pre-M1 iPads, even if you are limited to 2 apps at once, no external display support, etc. My 2017 Pro can have 3 full apps up at once with split screen and slide over (not counting Quicknote and PiP).

That all said…it is funny to look back to see how for the last year, people have been absolutely clamoring for M1 iPads to do more. I collected some screen shots here: https://imgur.com/a/vSPSEDl

"It is so stupid to put the M1 in an iPad when there is no benefit!"

Well Apple finally added a benefit. Crap.

(Free codes below) Heart Tempo; measure a heart beat or a rhythm in an instant!

    Posted: 12 Jun 2022 08:59 PM PDT

Hi r/Apple! I'm the developer of Heart Tempo; a new, beautiful, and simple way to get your heart rate, the tempo from that song, or the rhythm from anything else instantly.

Heart Tempo has a beautiful and intuitive design, presenting you with the app in all its elegance with no difficulty to use. Simply select your measurement style, press the button to begin, and tap out the beat in the big box in the centre of the screen until the app prompts you with the result.

There are three modes within the app, - heart rate, music beat, and other - each tuned for that specific category. For example, with the heart rate style, you can add your measurement directly to the Apple Health app with a single tap. There is also a history panel, where your past beat measurements appear right there for you to refer back to later.

Last time I posted here, I collected some feedback and added some refinements and bug fixes in a new 1.0.1 update to improve your experience on the app.

Thanks for checking out Heart Tempo! There are 10 free codes in the comments. If you missed them, please consider supporting Heart Tempo and my other apps by grabbing it from the App Store for a low price of $0.99USD!

I'm very happy to hear any feedback or comments you may have for Heart Tempo! Feel free to leave it a review on the App Store, or leave your feedback here in the comments!

Home screen folders: am I missing something?

    Posted: 12 Jun 2022 05:35 PM PDT

After all these years the process of grouping apps into folders and reordering app position still seems so fiddly. I actually wonder if there are shortcuts or hacks I am unaware of. It would be great if you could click an app and it would drop down a menu of which screen and/or folder. to move it to. As it is tons of apps get unintentionally relocated moving another one around.

We created a Wallpapers app with AR Ready Canvas prints. Giving away 90 1 Year Promo Codes.

    Posted: 12 Jun 2022 08:39 AM PDT

    App Download Link

Giving away 90 Promo Codes for 1 year Premium.

We've been working with AR recently so we merged a project and created a cool wallpapers app mainly filled with art we love.

All of the wallpapers were built from scratch and we decided to bring them to life with AR, using high resolution canvas prints Here are a few video demos tinyworlds.app/ar

    https://youtu.be/_P29SArJpAM

The AR tracking works super well even in low light and harsh lightning conditions as shown in the video, if the right image is used.

With the AR Glasses, it would look super cool to have your house art come to life on demand. In our office now we have about 16 canvases already, testing and hanging our wallpapers of choice.

Feedback would be appreciated. More collections are incoming so would like to hear what you want to see. iOS 16 friendly content should also be made ready.

Also let's talk about Live Wallpapers/Live Photo wallpapers being removed from iOS 16? All these wallpapers are animated but as of iOS 16 they will only be able to be viewed with AR or in the Photos app.

Edit: All codes have been claimed. You can contact us through the app or Insta page and we'll eventually get to all as we generate more codes, thank you everyone!

It’s been a little over a year Apple announced Siri on third party devices. What device got support ?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2022 12:32 PM PDT

1 Device according to all results from Google: Ecobee Thermostat…

It's probably a "failure" because it requires you to have a HomePod mini, and then there is no point for manufacturers to add the feature to an Audio system for example. Like what's the point if you already have a HomePod mini.

fix for #images imessage extension crashing your phone

    Posted: 12 Jun 2022 07:59 PM PDT

TLDR: turn off the "check for sensitive photos"

recently my imessage app has been freezing not allowing me to do any inputs on the screen and it completely stop responding. up until recently the only "fix" there was for this was to restart my phone, and that only got the app to respond but wouldn't load any of the gifs i had received. the fix i found confuses me in how it works. the sensitive image search in messages for some reason blocks all incoming gifs and freaks out crashing the app. i don't know if this is something to do with the development of this feature or not but i wanted to get this solution out seeing as there is no other solution out there (that i have found) that works.

location of setting (thanks to u/AppleNeird2022)

Check for Sensitive Photos is only for child devices in Family Sharing and can only be enabled or disabled from the guardian or parent's device controlling Screen Time on their child's device.

    Sideloading Discussion

    Posted: 13 Jun 2022 01:20 AM PDT

I have some thoughts on the approaching DMA (Digital Markets Act) in the EU, as it pertains to Apple's stance on side loading. I'd humbly ask that you keep this in mind before reading my argument:

We're on Reddit—our views on (and passion for) technology do not represent the customers Apple builds products for. At its best, Apple makes technology disappear. Us tech enthusiasts spend our days fixating on it. You can see the disconnect.

    So, side loading.

The App Store has brought many innovations, but for this argument, the most important one is the non-technical aspects of iPhone security it enables. Because of the human App Review, Apple can enforce non-technical policies. Some of these have been the most impactful privacy and security measures of the last decade. Privacy Nutrition Labels and App Tracking Transparency exist only because Apple mandates their existence through App Review.

And these policies are stunning in their effectiveness. As you know, Facebook is having a tough few quarters thanks to these (see here). There's even times companies have tried to sneak by, only to quickly get caught by Apple.

Upcoming legislation will change the situation. The Digital Markets Act, if passed, will force Apple to allow users to install apps from outside of the App Store. At first, this doesn't sound so bad. But let's play through what will happen next:

    1. Apple adds a switch in Settings to "Allow Untrusted Software on Your iPhone". Tapping it brings up a big scary popup, as you'd expect. For now, let's say this level of discouragement is defined as legal by the EU.
    2. At this point, most users won't sideload—they won't even know what it means. Some of us will, I'm sure many to download old video game emulators. It's mostly contained to the demographic of people who read The Verge.
    3. Then stuff starts to change. It might not happen on day one, but eventually, a big social media app will pull its app off the App Store, and go sideloading only. Maybe at first, they'll stop updating the App Store version, keeping the hot new feature as a web exclusive. But either way Facebook isn't going to sacrifice that $10 billion, and this is their only opening to salvage.
    4. Now people from Step 2 are confused. They just bought a new iPhone and... where's Facebook? What happened to TikTok? They do a Google search and see a nicely designed step by step guide on the Facebook website, carefully explaining where to tap, how far to scroll, which toggle to switch on.
    5. Over time, the number of people who have sidesloading enabled grows and grows. And as that group grows, scammers won't hesitate to start spending all their resources on tricking these newly "freed" phones—after all, study after study shows that iPhone users spend the most on digital content, which also means they have the most to lose on scams.

So now look what's happened. We've just doomed billions of people to a world we just escaped from: the PC—full of scam popups, ransomware, constant data vulnerability. We've gone backwards.

A common refrain to this tends to be: "Apple allows sideloading on the Mac, in fact, they always have. How can this be so bad on iPhone?" While both Mac and iPhone are computers made by Apple, they're different in almost every other regard. There's somewhere around 150 million Macs in use today. There's more than 1.6 billion iOS devices in use. The Mac stays tucked in your bag or sits on your desk—while iPhone is in your pocket, everywhere you go, usually connected to Apple Watch, meaning your phone has some of the most private data imaginable. Your health. This is on top of the apps we use on our phone, that don't even exist for Mac. Things like banking, mental health, our most private photos. For many of us it's unthinkable, but for most, it's not uncommon to have only an iPhone for a computer. The scale and personalized nature of iPhone make it completely incomparable to the Mac.

Another dissent: "Well, Apple has super advanced security systems—like sandboxing! What can this malware really do?" While they're not wrong, they're also not thinking about the right kind of malware. Remember the kinds of data that we keep on our phones. The theft of that stuff can be life destroying. And for every zero-day exploit, sideloading now offers itself as a distribution system with one less shell of security, ready for the arming.

Philosophically, is sideloading nice? I can understand the appeal. But I hope that these details helped to show the other side of the story. It's easy to get caught up in the tech world, and see it as the only world. But it's good to remember why we all do what we do—to make life easier for the people who don't care about technology, anymore than we care about the mechanics of deep sea oil drilling (unless that's your thing).

Lastly, I'd like to leave you with this. The reason Apple does what they do. Their North Star really is in making the best products for people. Everyone talks about "Apple Tax" or their crazy Pro Stand pricing, but in reality, Apple isn't primarily driven by costs. They operate under the same philosophy today as they did when Steve was in charge, which is: make great products and the money follows. They oppose sideloading because they see it as making their product worse. Maybe you disagree with them, but the motivations are pure.

    Apple needs to drop Paybright.

    Posted: 13 Jun 2022 10:16 AM PDT

From a company that cares so much about user experience but ends up going with a company like Paybright is beyond me.

Trying to buy a phone from apple.ca and trying to use Paybright has been a complete nightmare.

    My experience.

    Try to buy phone.

    Get message

we have detected a security risk and are not able to proceed with your transaction.

Get my mom, dad, sister and wife to try and they all get this message.

So i call Paybright and they said someone will get back to me with in 2 days to unlock my account. Five days go by and no one gets back to me so i call them back and get the same message i have to wait 2 more days.

Finally someone gets back to me by email. They want me to send a picture of my drivers license to them to prove who i am.

So i scan my drivers license and send them the pictures. Two days go by and i get an email saying i cant scan them and to take a picture of it with my phone.

So i take a picture with my phone and send it to them. Three days go by and now they want me to send them government documents with my name and address on them so they can prove who i am.(FUCK NO)

I really wish there was a way to complain to apple about the service i have been getting with there 3rd party.

Track your Gaming Backlog with my app, Cartridge

    Posted: 12 Jun 2022 07:57 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

As Summer Game Fest kicks off and everyone catches up on what PS5 and Xbox has to offer, I wanted to post again about my video game backlog app, Cartridge.

I posted here almost two years ago when I first released this app, but I've been incrementally updating the app with more quality of life features.

Cartridge is meant to help manage your gaming backlog. I see it as a todo-list app where you add, manage, and delete games as you finish them.

A lot of users also like to use it to track their collection (like myself!), and for that, I support things like game ratings and custom lists to help those who want to "collect" within the app.

The app is FREE with a ONE-TIME IAP to unlock "Premium". As a user and developer, I don't believe every app needs to be a subscription, so I want to be able to offer this subscription-free :).

There hasn't been a lot of adoption yet, so I want to share this here :) for those who have been looking for something like this.

I'm open to feedback and feature requests, so if anyone has anything they think can be added, let me know! Just a couple pre-answers to some of the more common requests:

    1. Unfortunately I can't implement PSN/Xbox tracking since Sony/Microsoft don't have APIs to get that data. I'm aware of third party APIs but I'd rather not rely on those since I can't vouch for the privacy and security of your data there, and it's not always certain if/when Sony or Microsoft could take them down.

    2. Im working on a grid view and a stats page! The latter is especially a bit difficult because it needs a library to do that, but I'm hoping to offer them soon.

    3. I know it's a bit expensive for a one-time purchase, but like I said above, while most apps nowadays go for subscriptions, I'm personally against every app needing a sub. That said, I'd still like to get Cartridge to a point where I can justify continuing its development by making me some money, so I price it higher with the idea in mind that I'll never do subscriptions, and that I'd like to at least make some coffee money with it :).

Genius Bar - Integrated Current Check

    Posted: 12 Jun 2022 09:58 AM PDT

Thought this might be an interesting discussion point and wanted to see if others had found similar experiences at the Genius Bar.

I'm personally not an Apple product user, but my sister loves them. She has an iPhone XS, which after a more alcohol infused night out, found itself with a hefty puncture on the bottom right of the screen (despite having a screen protector and a case, it was a very bad smash!).

The phone wouldn't turn on, so we booked an appointment at the genius bar to see what they could do. Apple promptly got us booked in for the next day.

The first thing the technician did upon arrival was run what he called an "Integrated Current Check". I have no idea what this is, as it appears to be a name for a tool that only Apple use, but in the technicians words, it "works out if the device is functioning".

Result from the test? Dead phone. Completely bricked - you can imagine the pain felt by my sister who is terrible at making backups.

The technician said that they couldn't repair the phone, because there was no guarantee upon opening it up that they would be able to fix it. The logic here puzzled me - the phone was apparently dead and we had nothing to lose by opening it up. But, Apple's policy is that if the repair cannot be guaranteed, they will not proceed with repair (perhaps to inflate successful repair statistics?). So despite my suggesting "what if it's just the screen", they can't proceed, because something more complex might have been wrong internally. We were quoted £519 for a new phone. The technician, who was actually extremely friendly, suggested we look elsewhere before returning to Apple for repair/replacement.

So we went to our local Curry's store. After a bit of deliberation and some really interesting talk about the phone internals, and how the puncture was no where near the logic board, the Curry's technician plugged the phone in to try and give it some charge for 10 minutes.

In blissful contrast to the Apple store, the Curry's technician asked me to call my sisters phone. Incredible - it started to ring. The phone had been working all this time, the screen was just completely bust. Curry's couldn't do the repair, so we took it to another 3rd party store where it was fixed for £60 - the colour is slightly off, but much MUCH cheaper than a new device.

SO, if you're still with me, and I hope you are, what was with the Integrated Current Check? It reported a dead device, yet the phone was clearly working. I really hate the idea that Apple would run an official looking check to convince people they need a new device (e-waste implications here are phenomenal), but I wouldn't put it past them.

Anyone else had this experience or similar? Would love to hear from you!

Decided to not buy the MacBook Air M2 . . .

    Posted: 13 Jun 2022 06:10 PM PDT

I had my mind set on buying an MacBook Air M2, but after watching the launch, I didn't really feel like I needed it. I have a 2015 MacBookPro. I have an iPad Pro M1, do I really need an another laptop? I decided to make a change, and instead I purchased the Apple Magic Keyboard for my iPad Pro M1. Honestly I don't regret it at all now. It does 95% of what I want it to do, and when I want to do some C Coding or such, I have the old MBP for that. The keyboard really makes the iPad Pro feel like a laptop, and it is tiny! I think I see the world is changing once again, honestly the lines between laptop and iPad are really starting to blur, and iOS16 w/ Ventura (which I can't load) will really make them even more the same. I would not be surprised if one day the Air and the iPad lines merged. Especially with the USB support in iOS16.

The truth be told, overall the price is about the same as the MacBook Air. The M1 iPad is NOT cheap and neither is the keyboard. If I didn't have either, I might have gone MB Air M2 over iPad Pro M1, but since I already had the iPad, this was a great upgrade and really can wait longer to buy a new laptop.

Lightning versus USB-C: Pros and cons for the iPhone

    Posted: 13 Jun 2022 01:08 PM PDT

We have launched a new iOS app after 3 years called meCordi

    Posted: 12 Jun 2022 07:37 AM PDT

I know, meCordi is an odd name for an app.

99 Promocode for yearly subscriptions available to claim

The initial idea was to create an Audio Recorder that allows you to also add your notes and pictures to the timeline and when you playback the audio, the related pictures and notes appear at the exact moment. Something like slideshow with audio in the background.

For example, considering you are recording your classroom, you usually need to take notes, take some pictures from the whiteboard, etc.

The problem is, when you are trying to listen back to the classroom recordings later, you usually don't have access to those supportive notes and pictures. Now assume you could have all of them in one place as an integrated file format called meCordi.

meCordi allows you to record your meetings, classrooms, audio books, podcasts, webinars, etc. as a single file that include audio and all related notes, comments, and pictures. When you playback the meCordi file, it will show you the related whiteboard picture, technical drawings, picture of your own handwritten notes, music score etc. in sync with your audio files.

You can add notes and pictures while you are recording or simply add some placeholder bookmarks to replace them with related pictures or notes later. You can also edit meCordi files later.

meCordi is a great way to share your webinars and audio books. It is an integrated single file format that you can send through WhatsApp or share it in your blog page.

It also offers some unique features. For example you can specify who is talking now while you are recording. Then we can search all of your mecordi files for that person. You can even limit playback for specific persons. For example, assuming you are recording an interview and you need to listen again and transcript your interview, you can ask meCordi to only play your guest audio and jump over your own parts!

Another interesting feature is about how we handle audio segments and selections and their attributes. You can easily jump between different segments of each audio (based on bookmarks, attribute, speaker, etc.) and apply some quick changes to that segment.

For example you can make a segment silent, or change its playback speed (for boring parts or make some slow-talking people go much faster) or discard it (we will jump over discarded parts). And all of these changes are non-destructive and you can undo them until you decide to make your changes permanent by infusing all changes.

Another feature that makes meCordi files unique is how we handle compression and quality of contents.

All of us have seen huge video recordings of webinars or lectures, but most of these sessions are nothing but a set of Powerpoint slides and an audio file. The point is, if you try to compress the video file, you will make graphics and texts almost non-readable.

What we did in meCordi file format is that you can decide which part could be compressed (for example audio file and most of included non-graphic pictures) and which part should not be compressed (for example screenshots of slides, whiteboard, music scores, etc.). This way we would have a very reasonable file size with the highest graphical quality possible.

I hope our new app finds a way in your personal and professional life and thanks to the great community here for accepting self-promo posts like this.

I would appreciate any input and feedback. Give us a little support to find our way through this competitive environment.

You can try it for free here. For now we only have iOS version. Free version can play meCordi files and also it is a complete standard audio recorder.

We are giving away 99 promo codes for our first adopters, click on above link and claim your promo code and don't forget to rate and add your reviews to app store. Thanks again.

I think I know why only iPhone 8 and above are supported for iOS 16

    Posted: 13 Jun 2022 07:53 AM PDT

The new redesigned Lock Screen features, alongside new fonts and widgets, a depth effect and other filters such as Studio which are very similar to the Portrait Styles available on iPhone. I think that the reason why only iPhones 8 or newer are supported is because of the lack of algorithms which come with Portrait Styles in iPhones 7 and 6s.

VOLUME CONSIDERATIONS: Macbook 12" versus 2022 MBA

    Posted: 12 Jun 2022 11:12 AM PDT

TL;DR: The Macbook 12" is 36% smaller and 25% lighter than the latest M2 MBA, making the difference between the 12" and Air lines significantly bigger than the difference between the Air and Pro lines. If the "Air" line's existence is justified because of smaller size and weight vs Pros, then the much smaller and lighter 12" line should at least be considered.

I have been in love with the 12" MacBook since it came out. Size and portability are my NUMBER ONE priority because of my lifestyle and usage which favors portability over performance. I am also the type of person who buys the new thing every year, even if I don't need the new features - so my favorite device being discontinued has left me itching. Of course I like that there are rumors for next year maybe, but for now all we have for sure is the MBA next month.

I looked at the MBA refresh over the last couple years and could never convince myself to go for it. Looking online I would always be tempted, but then I'd take my 12" into the shop and compare them and the fact is the MBA is still chunky compared to it. This in-person versus online difference is what made me want to look at the volume.

    M2 MacBook Air 2022: Volume = 8.46×11.97×.44 = 44.557128 inches3

    Macbook 12": Volume = 7.74×11.04×.33 = 28.198368 inches3

That means the MacBook 12" is actually taking up around 36% less space in your bag. That's really quite a lot, and more than the raw numbers might lead you to believe. When you see 11.97 inches versus 11.04, you think "Oh, that's not much more space". But if I tell you it's 36% larger, you'd definitely think it's in a different size classification. Let's compare the next smallest Apple makes which is the new 13" pro and the 2022 M2 Air:

    13" M2 MacBook Pro Volume = 8.36×11.97×.61 = 61.042212 inches3

As you can see this means the "Pro" lineup and the "Air" lineup are MUCH closer in volume, but Apple feels it justifies a whole product line and the "Air" title..... So surely the 12" MacBook, which is far MORE compact than the Air is to the Pro also deserves consideration. Many people say when people ask for a new 12" that "the Air isn't much larger just get that".... Well I can easily say to people wanting the Air that "The difference between the Air and Pro is even smaller, so just get a Pro".

For context the MacBook 12" is actually much closer to the volume of a NAKED iPad Pro 12.9.

    iPad Pro 12.9 Volume = 8.46×11.04×.25 = 23.3496 inches3

Add in the magic keyboard case and the MacBook 12" is smaller in volume AND over 1lb lighter. Isn't that nuts?

Now there are LOTS of other factors when choosing a laptop. Sound quality, screen quality, performance, battery life, etc. But most all of these could be addressed with an M2 12" (as rumored). So if size is a reasonable justification for product lines to exist, the 12" should be reintroduced. If size isn't enough, then the Air line should be discontinued because there is no other advantage compared to Pro line.
