Posted: 03 Apr 2022 04:34 AM PDT Hi all, I just updated to 12.3.1 on a 16 inch M1 Max. I've noticed when logging in now it takes quiter a bit longer to get into the OS. For example before the upset I'd type my password and press Return and it would be straight in. Now after every reboot I enter the password and I get a slow progress bar under my username and it can sometimes take 10-20 seconds to get into the OS. I've repaired disk permissions and reset NVRAM via terminal in the recovery options but it still persists. This is clean install so no conflicting software either. Does anyone know how to resolve this? While it's not a huge issue it's a bit of an annoyance. [link] [comments]
"Shortcuts and tricks for power users" thread Posted: 02 Apr 2022 02:28 PM PDT What are your daily hacks to do stuff faster? Post whatever comes to your mind, what's obvious to you may not be known to others. I'll start: - When a website doesn't have fancy Drag and Drop support but only has a "Browse.." button to select a file, you can drag a file from finder onto that very button. The browser kinda adds Drag and Drop in that way so you don't have to navigate to your file in the "Browse.." menu. - I set up a keyboard shortcut to open any file in my preferred text editor which is very useful for files that don't have an extension linked - in Spotlight, use CMD+enter to open a file's location in finder instead of opening the actual file (Coming from this comment) https://www.reddit.com/r/MacOS/comments/tugceh/discovered\keyboard_shortcut_for_superfast_folder/i353xjy/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) [link] [comments]
Shared Files Not Asking To Save Changes Posted: 03 Apr 2022 06:53 AM PDT So I have a shared file and a shared folder. Odd thing, when a file or folder is shared, the contents doesn't follow the setting on "General: Ask to keep changes when closing documents". When you make a change a close the document, changes are automatically saved. Which is odd, and to be honest, stupid. Is there any workaround to this? I use file sharing to work with my team. We are a small team so we can get by with these basic tools. But it can become problematic if someone makes an unwanted entry and changes are automatically saved. Great that there's revert to-previous versions, but this isn't convenient. I tried Apple Support through chat and they basically gave me a run around about unrelated stuff, restarting, and even suggested reinstalling MacOS...which in the end the person I was chatting to admitted, that he doesn't know about this. Installing apps using homebrew --casc vs "regular" install Posted: 03 Apr 2022 03:07 AM PDT Which is the preferred way to install apps? I like homebrew, as it reminds me using package manager on linux (I do not have enough experience to compare them), however I am curious whether there are any downsides of using homebrew isntead of "regular" installation by moving app to apps folder. Best/easiest method to DL and save video/audio -->easy clipping and cataloging across the board Posted: 03 Apr 2022 04:34 AM PDT Last relevant post I could find was 2yrs ago in this sub, hope this is cool/the appropriate sub, please correct/direct me if not. Need the lowdown on DLing stuff these days..I don't mind paying a few bucks if it's worth it, but basically I am looking to save videos as files on my Mac from various sites, must work with safari, must have a simple clipping function. Also I would like to save clips from spotify/audible if possible (or if it's a separate app/site/etc), it's not a dealbreaker if not also on mobile, but would be nice..in general: wanting to streamline the process as much as possible. Please and thank you :) [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Apr 2022 08:55 AM PDT I am on my second macBook but have never turned FileVault on, on any of them. Not sure why but a feeling that there are consequences. For example, I worry that it will slow down the performance. For example, it makes recovery in the event of a rebuild more complicated For example, what impact does it have on backed-up files (to NAS eg)? Any comments / experiences very much welcomed. Is it possible to run W10 on a M1 MacBook (Parallels)? Posted: 03 Apr 2022 08:19 AM PDT I've been running into a lot of issues with Parallels 17 and Windows. For starters, I am only able to install W11, but it asks for an activation key and it doesn't want to accept my W10 one. I tried to find a way to get W10, but the Windows Preview Edition only has W11. I tried UUP W10 ARM64 (10.0.21390.2025), but it wouldn't install and I got an error. So far I'm finding mix results on how to proceed with this. Does anyone have any other ideas? [link] [comments]

Should I erase my Macbook pro to solve this issue, or continue using it in safe mode? Posted: 03 Apr 2022 08:11 AM PDT I have a MacBook Pro (2015, 15 inch, bought in 2018, currently running Monterey) and a few days ago it's started freezing and becoming totally unresponsive shortly after I log in (more detail in my post history) I've tried basically everything short of taking it in for repairs and nothing has worked. I tried to reinstall macOS, both Monterey and the version it originally came with, and both got stuck and didn't progress. I also made a bootable installer to try to install Big Sur, in case Monterey was causing problems, but I can't use that unless I wipe my hard drive first. I don't have any super important files that I absolutely cannot lose, mainly just old homework assignments. However, I don't want to wait hours to erase everything and set it up again, only to risk that not even solving the issue. It does boot into safe mode and works fine there, so I've just been using that for now, but I'm not sure if it's ok to use it long term. I'm also a college student, so I can't go a while without my laptop nor do I have tons of money to have it repaired. Should I just take the risk and wipe everything, or keep using it in safe mode for now? [link] [comments]
Using a bootable installer file to install Big Sur over Mojave Posted: 03 Apr 2022 07:49 AM PDT Instead of doing a clean install, I'd like to use my bootable installer to upgrade my iMac from Mojave to Big Sur. I prefer not doing a clean install on this machine and I'm asking just to be sure I'm not creating a bigger problem. Can I just copy "Install macOS Big Sur.app" from the USB to my hard drive applications folder and run it from there? I've used the bootable installer previously for two clean installs but for this machine, I'm hoping to just install Big Sur over the top of Mojave. Thanks. [link] [comments]

Posted: 03 Apr 2022 06:07 AM PDT I am not sure if this is a mac issue or IOS, but i have 2 contacts (including myself) that continue to get overwritten every few hours. Whether i edit them on the mac, or on phone, or on iCloud.com. after editing, they are correct on all devices, but an hour or 2 later, they are back before the edit. (no contact picture, info missing etc) Am wondering what my contacts could be connected to that would update that info, and how i would find out my GUESS is that it is due to linked contacts, but i cant see anything linked in the contacts app. I disabled the gmail contacts syncing on all devices to test [link] [comments]
A few questions about upgrading and booting from an external drive Posted: 03 Apr 2022 02:09 AM PDT Hi, I'm trying to upgrade and made a complete clone of my desktop computer using Carbon Copy Cloner. Not sure why I used that instead of Time Machine, except it was recommended long ago and I got used to using it, bought it, and have never tried time machine. Anyway, I tried booting from it on my laptop, and it didn't recognize the drive, I held opt+R while it was booting up, it took me to a screen with 4 options to choose hard drives but I didn't see my clone as an option, except in one menu which was to reinstall or something, and it talked briefly about erasing things so I didn't do that and instead restarted again into the normal HD. Restoring from a time machine backup was one of the options I remember. I want to upgrade from 10.9 to 10.11 or possibly 10.12 or higher, I found the old install file via the apple legacy downloads page but I want to have a way to go back in case I don't like the upgrade. I am only upgrading because the internet is forcing me to by disabling pages and functions that used to work, even though the rest of the computer runs fine. And I want to try some newer software. Upgrading will break some of my older programs and workflows, but I'm biting the bullet now...AS long as there's a way back. I was under the impression that I could plug in my cloned hard drive and boot directly from that and it'd be just like as I'm using it now, it wouldn't have an installation or overwriting process, all my program's licenses would still work, and I could change from 10.9 to 10.12 and back and forth just by plugging in the old drive whenever and restarting. It'd be like using an emulator of the old system. Did I understand that right? Would that happen with a time machine backup as well? How come the clone that I made with CCC that I backed up on a USB LaCie rugged doesn't seem to work? I checked it in disk utility as well and under the info, it shows "bootable: no" I partitioned it as a GUID when I got it, there are 3 folders on there, my BACKUP folder, and 2 other small folders outside that. Is the fact that its in a folder or has other folders outside it preventing it from being a boot drive? Thanks [link] [comments]
Adware I can’t get rid of, help needed Posted: 03 Apr 2022 05:51 AM PDT Hi, some how accidentally downloaded adware on my MacBook Air, safari stays open and pop up ads every 30 minutes along with search engine changing to bing/yahoo, I've tried malware bytes, ccleaner and a bunch of other trusted cleaners but nothing is working. When using the search bar it comes up with belsasmetot? Can't find anything related to it. Any advice?? [link] [comments]
How to delete files on an ext4 disk? Posted: 03 Apr 2022 01:06 AM PDT I am running a macOS 12 Macbook M1 and I would like to be able to delete files on my old external disk. But currently I can only copy files from there to my Macbook, not deleting or creating folders there. How to be able to do that? Is there any program that could do that? [link] [comments]
Migrating from iTunes to the Music app Posted: 02 Apr 2022 11:42 PM PDT I have recently upgraded from Mojave to Monterrey and in the process from iTunes to the Music app. I didn't have any issue migrating my library to the new app (holding Alt while opening to select the old library file). However, it seems like the app cannot link to the files listed, almost all of them (except if bought on the iTunes Store) have an exclamation mark next to them. Not a big deal, I don't remember doing that but it looks like I had iTunes set up to read the files from another folder than the iTunes Media one. I still have that folder, I haven't gone through the whole thing but it looks like all the files are there, so it would just be a matter of linking it back to the Music app. I currently have in my user's original Music folder: 1 iTunes folder, 1 Musique folder (the one with the actual files), 1 Music folder (for the app) and 1 Audio Music Apps (no idea what this one is). When I add a new song to the Music app, I would like to keep all the files in the same location where the other ones already are, rather than being spread between Musique (old files) and Music or iTunes Media (new files). It is my understanding that if I go to Preferences > Files and change Musique as the multimedia folder, any new song will from now on be added to that folder. But how about linking what's already in the library to that same folder since that's where the actual files are? Would File > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate files do that? Since the Musique folder is now the reference one? Or would it create duplicates of everything since Consolidate create copies? Or do I have to put all of my files back into the iTunes Media folder that is currently read by the app and then choose Musique as my multimedia folder, consolidate to move it all there and erase the content from iTunes Media to avoid having the files twice? I'm a bit confused… Also, once I've completed the whole process and my Music app setup is all good, can I trash the whole iTunes folder and what's left in it? Additionally, when I browsed the new computer, I noticed there was already a library file in the Music > Music folder, before I even opened the app for the first time. After opening and importing my iTunes library, it is now gone, but inside the Music (app) folder, I now have Music Library.musiclibrary, dating from the day I opened the app and that hasn't been modified since then, and another Music folder with another Music Library.musiclibrary inside (this one showing the last time I opened the app). I'm guessing this means this is the file currently in use. Should I erase the other library file that hasn't been updated? [link] [comments]
Any free alternatives to the Finder? Posted: 03 Apr 2022 02:03 AM PDT After years of using it, I still can't get used to it. Just not intuitive at all for me and very cumbersome to use. Looking for an alternative, please. There's no reason to downvote; it's just not my cup of tea. Looking for a GUI like a Linux or Windows file explorer. I like the tree view. It's easier for me to navigate and copy/move files. [link] [comments] |
