    Stop selecting annotations in preview/markup

    Posted: 30 Apr 2022 02:47 AM PDT

Hello, I'm trying to annotate pdfs natively using preview and markup on my M1 Macbook Air. I am facing a problem were when I attempt to draw a line close to another line, it just selects and moves that one instead of drawing a new one. Is there a way to disable this? Thanks

    CleanMyMac is worth money?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2022 06:30 AM PDT

I was searching for an all-in-one app for my new MacBook Pro 14 and seems CleanMyMac is the only solution with all maintenance tool and antivirus. It's worth the money? They also send me a 30% as a student for the one-time purchase.

    Photo Management

    Posted: 30 Apr 2022 06:12 AM PDT

I'm looking for some help here, I've recently in the last year moved over to Apple devices and now I'm converting from Google Photos to iCloud for my photo management but I'm starting to run out of space on my MacBook Air and therefore need some advice on best practice or tips.

Last summer I got a MacBook Air (m1 base model) and at the time there was a lead time of 4 weeks for the base model with more storage or more RAM, I decided to go with standard spec and I thought I'd never need any more than 256Gb space as most, if not all, of my data is in the cloud with Google.

A few months later I sold my Pixel 5 and got an iPhone 13 Pro, I've recently added more devices so I think I'm totally in the Apple ecosystem now.

I was using Google Photos to back up my pics/videos on my iPhone up until recently and I decided I need to move over finally, for cost reasons and take advantage of the Apple ecosystem, I've been paying £8 pm for Google Photos 2Tb cloud storage and £20 pm for Apple One the last 8 months.

I made a plan and started (a long tedious process) downloading my photos/videos from Google Photos to my MacBook and added them to the Photos app to upload to iCloud. It took some time to plan but I've managed to move the last 3 years of stuff over and I'm using a spreadsheet to mark each month to keep track of things, I had some issues on the way where I didn't realise deleting photos from Google Photos app on my phone deleted them from iCloud, luckily I found this out early on and restored these from iCloud and now use Google Photos via the web to delete and not delete on iCloud.

Now I'm happy with what I'm doing, I'm under 200Gb of data on Google meaning I've been able to reduce my plan to 200Gb at a cost of £2, yes it may only be a fiver but with the cost of living increasing it all adds up, my iCloud plan gives me 200Gb which I may have to increase slightly once all stuff moved over, however, I've come across a sticking point.

I've still got 5 years' worth of data to move over, around 100Gb, but my MacBook only has 55Gb left now due to the Photos app increasing to about 100Gb, I've got the option enabled in the app to not download full-size images/videos but I'm not sure how good and how quick it works.

Does anyone have an idea or tips for this as I plan to do another year's worth soon and I'm going to get stuck due to lack of space, I have thought about uploading the data through iCloud but I'm not sure how good it is at bulk uploading and suspect I'll have some issues, as with the Photos app it syncs overnight and is normally done the next day.

    Thanks in advance.

Window Manager based on spatial position?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2022 06:09 AM PDT

Is there a program that allows me to find select windows based on where they are relative to my active window via keyboard?

For example: "switch to window right of current"

Is it valid (or advisable) to have "!" or "#" in a Mac filename - any issues that might arise ?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2022 06:06 AM PDT

I'm writing an app that saves a filename the user enters. I am allowing alpha-numeric characters, spaces and the exclamation mark and the # hash symbol.

Are there any potential issues with having # or ! in a filename on a Mac ?

    macOS vs windows speed

    Posted: 30 Apr 2022 12:26 AM PDT

Hi, I have an M1 MacBook Air with 16GB ram and 1TB of storage, as well as a Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 with the i7 11th gen, 16GB storage and 512GB ram. I heard a lot of hype about how fast M1 is and all, and I even saw myself how crazy the single core score was (1700). Meanwhile, the surface laptop 4 only has a single core score of around 1400. Apple was showing off their instant on features as well as instant opening applications, so I expected it to be a jump over my Microsoft surface laptop 4. However, I just tried opening the lids of both laptops from sleep, and they turned on at the same time. Even applications like Chrome, which is optimised for M1 now, opened faster on the surface laptop. Even word opened in 3 seconds on the surface laptop while it took roughly 7 bounces for the M1 MacBook Air to open word.

My question is: where can I see the real speed difference between Intel and M1, and also why is instant open applications and instant on considered a feature of M1 when windows does it as well?

P.S. this is a genuine question. I really would like to know what is going on.

*help needed* Dell D6000 Docking Station Blue Yeti not recognized

    Posted: 30 Apr 2022 03:42 AM PDT

    Hello Guys,

I am struggeling fixing my sound problem.. For over a year I got a MacBook Air M1 (2020) with Montery installed atm. For my Displays and Power Supply I am using a Dell D6000 with Display Link. If I plug in my microphone (Blue Yeti) via USB, most times it doesn't work (it doesn't show up under my sound devices), but sometimes it works without any issues. When the blue yeti is plugged in via an usb-c to usb-a adapter it works perfectly.

Does someone knows that problem and got a fix?

    Cheers

    mission control randomly stops working?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2022 09:43 PM PDT

Randomly f3 and 3-finger swipe up will either stop working completely or will switch to activating spotlight.

It happened once before and I went into karabiner and reset it and all was fine.

Happened again today, but instead of activating spotlight it did nothing. I rebooted and all was well.

Any clue what is causing this?

New mac studio max, everything updated, using karabiner for two simple other things (right cmd + wasd = arrows and eject launches terminal)

Automating copying photos from one Apple Photos library into a different one

    Posted: 29 Apr 2022 08:01 PM PDT

I've spent awhile searching Reddit but haven't seen an answer, so here goes: Is there any tool to automate synchronizing two Apple Photos libraries that are on separate Apple IDs?

My wife and I have a family iCloud account with plenty of storage, but we want our collective photos to be in a single library (hers). I've read about PowerPhotos as an app that can merge libraries, but I'm looking for something I could do every 6 months or so and that doesn't require me to have both libraries loaded onto a single computer. We have no interest in using the same iCloud account. It looks like osxphotos is a Python app that might simplify the steps I currently use, but I don't have that level of sophistication.

To clarify, my dream is an app or script I can run every 3 months or so that would copy all my photos from XXXX-XX-XX into her iCloud Photos.

My workaround has been to either:

    a) log in to my wife's iCloud account via a browser on my computer, and to export and upload my photos into her account, OR

    b) log into my iCloud account on her computer and download my photos to her computer, then import into her Photos library.

Is there a better way? I'm happy to pay for software that does this for me.

Move Time Machine backup to different network location?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2022 02:28 AM PDT

Is it possible to make a Time Machine backup to a disk on Server A, then move that disk to Server B and have Time Machine continue the backup?

I have about 10TB on my Mac. I want to back it up using TM. My plan is to do the initial backup locally then move the backup disk to my parents' home, hanging off a RPi that VPNs into my home network. I'd rather avoid the initial 10TB going across the public internet - it would be kind-of slow!

Apple Magic Keyboard and mouse or Logitech my keys

    Posted: 30 Apr 2022 01:36 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I don't know what to do. I am using my MacBook Air sometimes on my monitor with a windows keyboard and mouse. Now I thought to buy a Apple Magic Keyboard + Magic Mouse 2. i would pay 75 Euro for both (used but almost new). I could also buy a MX Keys Logitech, which has windows and max os keys in one (80 Euro) without a mouse.

Now I don't know what to do, I'm using for my work a HP keyboard with windows and private I have a MacBook Air where the keyboard of windows is really annoying and also the mouse.

What should I buy ? If I buy the Apple accessories I need to switch from Magic Keyboard and mouse to windows keyboard and mouse for the work .

Is there a terminal incantation or something that gives me the thinker menu bars on the new MacBook Pros

    Posted: 29 Apr 2022 05:23 PM PDT

Is there anything that allows me to flip the Menu Bar?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2022 10:57 PM PDT

For context, I'm left handed and as such have my main display on the left. This presents a problem when the secondary display is used as MacOS still tries to put all the notifications on the right. I'd like for the notification centre to be on the left and the settings for an application to be on the right. I know some languages do this by default, but I haven't been able to find out how to do this and keep the system language in English.

How to find the application MacOS is verifying

How to find the application MacOS is verifying

I cannot figure out what MacOS keeps verifying, it just says "Verifying "aescn.dylib"...". I know how to get rid of the verifying window, but it worries me MacOS is verifying something I didn't install. Does this mean I potentially downloaded malware at some point?
