Megathread: Apple announces partnership with AMD, will close Apple Silicon division

Today Apple held a round table discussion where they announced a new long term partnership with AMD for all their CPU and GPU needs. The plan is to transition all Apple products, over time, to AMD's x86 platform and move away from ARM-based silicon. Some key quotes from the discussion:

    Tim Cook:

Good morning! Thank you all for being here. We here at Apple always try to think a little differently about how to move our products and our platforms forward for the next generation of users.

The best way to start this discussion is by talking about Apple TV+. Our customers have been blown away by programming such as Ted Lasso and The Morning Show. We also just celebrated digital streaming's first Best Picture Oscar with CODA. We realized that now that TV+ is available on a broad array of platforms, it didn't make sense anymore to spend so many resources on differentiating our platform with custom silicon. So today we are announcing a move to AMD for all our silicon needs and we will be transitioning away from custom silicon over the next 2 years.

    Craig Federighi:

Here on the software team we have over 15 years of experience developing macOS for x86 platforms, and we were able to dive into that treasure trove of knowledge to start to build the future of the platform, based on modularity and interoperability. It will allow us to return to beloved user features such as Boot Camp for Windows use. Plus, those Linux guys just wouldn't leave us alone, so this should make them really happy too.

    John Ternus:

The Mac has a storied history with x86 and we're so happy to be bringing it back. We know you all love tower designs, and thick laptop designs with large batteries. We heard your reviews of the M1 Ultra loud and clear, and though it is far more efficient than our competitors' designs, it cannot compete with their top of line performance. We think the next story for the Mac is how we can reach far into the past, to move into the future.

    Phil Schiller:

We really realized that performance per watt was not the only metric to shoot for, and that we had to look at a more holistic design of our products. This is really going to allow us to make some great advancements in future products. Just imagine the increased thickness of the iPhone to accommodate the larger battery and cooling system. We can fit the best camera ever into that kind of enclosure.

    Kevin Lynch

The advancements don't just stop at iPhone. Imagine an AMD processor in your watch, or even inside your AirPods. We have always focused on health features for the watch, and we will be able to do so much more with this new partnership. For example, we know heat is a very calming and relaxing experience. Now, as the watch detects increased heart rate, it will heat up to operate the CPU and sensor circuitry to monitor you. You get a natural experience of deep warming on your wrist as a reminder to breathe and be calm. You also have a weight band strapped to your wrist at all times, so even when you're out running, you're getting an upper body workout too.

This partnership will also revolutionize Apple Stores by helping with our environmental goals. As we replace Apple Silicon products with those containing Ryzen and Threadripper CPUs, as well as AMD GPUs, our utilization of the store heating systems will go down dramatically. This is a great net gain for the environment.

Johny Srouji was not available to comment but was seen walking around Apple Park mumbling various obscenities.

Finally, to close out the meeting, Phil Schiller was asked, "considering how many people love your custom Apple Silicon designs, how could you possibly consider making a move like this?"

Schiller got a slight grin on his face, a twinkle in his eye, and gently answered, "courage."

Edit: Whelp April Fools Day r/Apple. For those in the comments saying mods should get a job, I jammed this stupid post out on the subway on the way to doing hospital palliative care all day, so thanks for really brightening my morning (and for the suicide alert) before I spend all day with dying patients and angry family members.

Anyway hope it at least gave some people a smile.
