Why does Apple choose to keep write caching on for removable media? aka Why make us eject USB drives Posted: 16 Mar 2022 07:48 AM PDT Write caching enhances performance by copying first to memory quickly, and then writing to the drive as it can based on what else the system is doing. Windows systems use write caching but disable it for removable media like USB drives. You can just yank USB sticks without risk of corruption. MacOS systems always use write caching, even for removable media, which is why you have to "Eject" drives before removing. That step forces the system to flush the cache and finish any jobs writing to the USB drive that weren't complete before. My question is, why does Apple force the use of write caching for removable media given the user unfriendly inconvenience of having to eject first? Is the performance benefit that big? Couldn't Apple let it be a power user feature to enable write caching for select USB drives? Just like how Apple favored natural scrolling over reverse scrolling, I'd think Apple would favor natural USB drive yanking without extra software steps. [link] [comments]

MacOS 12.3 + 2018 macmini + C49RG9x Display - Won't show in native 5120 × 1440 Since update Posted: 16 Mar 2022 12:05 AM PDT Hi All. I have a 2018 Mac mini that is connected via usb-c to display port on a Samsung C49RG9x (native resolution is 5120 × 1440 ). No eGPU is connected as I know that's an issue. Pre 12.3, I had it connected this way and the Mac mini was fine. Now it won't register the C49RG9x as a monitor unless I turn on PBP which would split the resolution to two 2560 x 1440. Does anyone know a work around for this? Or is anyone else experiencing this as well? [link] [comments]

Time Machine now completely useless…?! When did this happen???!? Posted: 16 Mar 2022 08:28 AM PDT I updated to Mac OS 12.3 yesterday and it broke some software I use for audio recording and producing music Me being an educated and prepared tech nerd (or so I thought), I quickly booted into recovery mode and attempted to restore from a 12.2.1 (which has no issues) Time Machine backup …At which point I was given this error message "You must use migration assistant to transfer data from this backup" "Reinstall Mac OS if necessary and then use Migration Assistant" My jaw is on the fucking floor at the moment. When exactly did this happen, you have to reinstall MacOS every time you want to restore the system from a damned Time Machine backup? …And how exactly am I supposed to reinstall 12.2.1? I'm going to have to hunt down an installer somehow, and then put it on a usb stick and boot from that, right? This is absolutely insane. Can someone recommend a backup software where I can quickly undo software updates that might break things? I'm going to be at this all day long now, maybe even today AND tomorrow. FUCK! Mid 2015 MBP, Big Sur vs Monterey Posted: 16 Mar 2022 08:18 AM PDT I recently got my hands on a mid 2015 MBP, 16GBRAM and 2.2GHz i7 model. It is eligible for Monterey but I was wondering if it would be worth it to upgrade considering it is such an old system. I am primarily worried about impacts to performance and battery life. Intel MacBook Pro, can't find macOS 12.3 upgrade Posted: 16 Mar 2022 08:14 AM PDT I am trying to update to the new macOS to take advantage of Universal Control but it won't show the new update in the Software Update app. Is there any way to force it? Currently on 12.2.1 [link] [comments]
Posted: 16 Mar 2022 08:02 AM PDT Hi everyone, I have a 4K LG monitor (27UL500-W) and when I connect it to any of my Macs using HDMI, macOS outputs a limited color range (16-235) signal meant for TVs instead of the full (0-255) RGB signal meant for monitors. When using DisplayPort, the color output is correct, but I cannot use DisplayPort on my MacBook because I use DisplayPort for my desktop Mac, so I need to somehow get macOS to output the correct color signal over HDMI. My monitor only has one DisplayPort input which I cannot share. I have tried all sorts of fixes for RGB color output hoping that it would fix the HDMI color range issue, however, none of them seem to work properly anymore in macOS 12 Monterey. Any suggestions would be appreciated! [link] [comments]
Quick way to reduce video quality in iCloud Photo Library Posted: 16 Mar 2022 02:03 AM PDT So after putting it off for a long while, I've finally got round to going through old photos and videos in my iCloud Photo Library. I have SO many (100's) videos in 4K and 1080p that really don't need to be, I'd rather them be in 720p and save the storage space on; my MacBook Air, iCloud drive and time machine backups. My current, very slow workflow is; On my Mac, go to the high res video in photos app, "edit in QuickTime", then in QuickTime, export as 720p to the desktop. Drag the 720p version into the library, wait for it to upload to iCloud, delete the original high res version in photos, delete exported video on desktop and finally delete from deleted and empty trash. I've been doing it one by one, as the photos upload to iCloud process goes into a fit and failed a few times when I did it in bulk. Is there a process I'm missing that's there in the photos app to make this any quicker? Or any other method? Thank you 🙏🏽 [link] [comments]

MacOS 12.3. Anybody else suddenly having trouble with Teams? Posted: 16 Mar 2022 07:29 AM PDT I have a base-model 14" 2022 MBP. Today I tried to join a Teams meeting for the first time since upgrading to 12.3. The Teams app was unresponsive. I downloaded and reinstalled the latest version from MS with no improvement. I could get in with Safari so I had to quickly install Edge to get into the meeting. [link] [comments]

12.3 - Safe to update? Did they fix the memory leak issues? Posted: 16 Mar 2022 05:36 AM PDT I usually wait months to update because my mac is mission critical but I think it's time to leave Big Sure at this point in favor of security. Downloaded the update yesterday but read about memory leaks in the beta. Can anyone confirm or deny whether those have been fixed now? [link] [comments]
Ubuntu with Parallels on M1 Chip - identical to the Intel / AMD64 version? Posted: 16 Mar 2022 05:24 AM PDT For my job, I require macOS and Ubuntu together. No problem so far on Intel chips, I run Ubuntu VMs with Parallels on Intel Macs. For this particular reason, I'm hesitant to make the jump to M1. I saw a few YT videos showing Ubuntu running on M1 with Parallels, however they don't go into any details. My questions: - is the arm64 version of Ubuntu identical to the amd64 version in terms of availability of apps (snap, flathub and debian?) - will PPAs still work or is every developer required to make an extra arm64 version of their app (I'm afraid that the latter will be the case) [link] [comments]

Macbook Air M1 problems with remote calls Posted: 16 Mar 2022 05:17 AM PDT Got this brand new Macbook Air one month ago and now problems with remote calls started. My internet speed is good and other devices connected to the same WiFi does not experience anything similar. Also downloading or uploading works fine, it's just remote calls that gets very slow and laggy. I looked into logs of my router and noticed that there are a lot of DNS requests coming from this Macbook. It reaches up to 5 requests per second. Does anyone know what could be causing this Macbook to spam DNS requests? [link] [comments]
Notes app not completely closing after pressing 'x' Posted: 16 Mar 2022 12:57 AM PDT Right so I have macOS Monterey version 12.2.1 Before when I would close my notes app by pressing 'x', the app would completely close/quit, but now I have to do the whole "Quit completely" if I want it to close. Is there a way to make it so that it will always close completely after pressing 'x' without any addons? Or have I been blind the whole time and the notes app has never completely closed after pressing 'x' lol? [link] [comments]
