PSA: Fixing Universal Control if it doesn't work for you Posted: 15 Mar 2022 05:03 PM PDT After upgrading to macOS 12.3 and iPadOS 15.4, one of my Macs refused to work with Universal Control. I did a lot of digging and figured out everything I could about when it does and doesn't work.
If after all that it still doesn't work for you, check your router's network firewall settings. I expect Universal Control will not work on public or hotel WiFi networks that restrict communication between devices on the LAN for security reasons. Other issues you may encounter: Scrolling direction differs between your connected devices These settings should be set the same way on your devices. Set them both either on or off, as you prefer.
If these are different, then you will have a confusing time switching scroll directions as you move between devices. Cannot use Universal Control while using the iPad as Personal Hotspot The Personal Hotspot feature disables WiFi on the iPad while any device is tethered to it, so Universal Control does not work. Both devices must be on the same WiFi network. Universal Control can Interfere with Sidecar If you frequently use Sidecar to use your iPad as an extra display, I recommend disabling the "Push through the edge of a display..." option. If you are using Sidecar, then accidentally push against the edge of that display, Universal Control will take over and disconnect the Sidecar display. [link] [comments]

I hope iOS 16 has interactive widgets. Posted: 15 Mar 2022 11:11 AM PDT Like the title says, I really hope iOS 16 has interactive widgets. I have my music, weather, and note widgets on my home screen. It would be such a HUGE QOL feature to be able to quickly tap the widget to change the song (I know I can swipe from the top and do that I'm control center), or scroll through my locations next few hours to view the weather, or have a quick note function for the notes widget. I'm really pleased with this current version of iOS, but a few quality of life tweaks would really be great. What are some that you'd like to see implemented? [link] [comments]
So when I search for "Twitter" in the App Store... I get the following results. Posted: 15 Mar 2022 09:25 PM PDT Here are my search results, in order, for the keyword "Twitter" in the App Store. Bolded apps are at least somewhat relevant to Twitter. The rest are completely irrelevant. What hurts the most is that apps like Tweetbot or Twitterific are at #22 and #54.
Ok, I think you get my point. The results just keep going and it's really painful to read. 35 apps are bolded. So that's about 35% accuracy, and I'm being generous here, because a lot of these apps are complete rubbish. There's a couple of things Apple could do to address the 1.5 million apps currently in the App Store:
Yes, it would be a lot of work, and a lot of people to hire, even if only as contractors. But this is literally one of those problems that if you throw enough manpower at it, you would immediately improve the App Store by 50%. And if, afterwards, you throw some engineering and design power at this problem, you could implement processes to make sure future apps that are submitted are vetted correctly. What I'm saying is: this is a solvable problem. The solution is actually doable. This problem is vast, yes, but it can be done. It's not enough to say "There's 1.5 million apps, so obviously you can't human curate them all". Actually we can. We can human curate them, and even if we human curate them crudely, it would still be better. We don't have to give up the algorithms doing the work for us (Google seems to manage pretty well with algorithms, at least with their search engine) but if some human curation is necessary to bring the App Store into order, then so be it. What Apple product have you bought that wished you never did? Posted: 15 Mar 2022 02:17 AM PDT It's rare we buy Apple products that we hate. Macs, iPhones, AirPods, accessories. I still use my 4th gen TC to back up the three Macs in the house and if you could fell in love with an accessory then the leather iPhone cases is where my heart is. Then there are things I dislike but I learn to live with, like sharp edges on devices. And then there is the very rare occasion I hate something so much that I wish I never bought. For me that would be the Smart Folio case for the iPad Air. Moving from the old leather folio cases that offered all round protection to the Smart Folio felt like a tremendous downgrade. Posted: 15 Mar 2022 02:02 AM PDT Using it now for the first time and it works like magic, actually typing this post on my ipad mini from my macbook pro's keyboard and touchpad, it's insane how natural it also feels and instantly pairs up without any lag or annoying popups and permission requests. Didn't dive into it's functionality but enjoying the simple macbook mini experience shall i say? I had my doubts about picking the ipad mini over an air or pro due to losing the magic keyboard and smart connection pins, but this is a perfect alternative, if anyone has cool tricks in universal control please share them in a comment, would love to know how far this can go. Do we know how many thunderbolt 4 buses are on Mac Studio? Posted: 15 Mar 2022 06:45 PM PDT Very surprised I can't seem to find any info on this yet. We know the Mac Studio comes with 4 or 6 Thunderbolt 4 ports, but has Apple release the specs yet on how many buses are on he Mac Studio? One of the things I love about my M1 Max MacBook Pro is how - despite just having three T4 ports - each port has a dedicated bus. I hope it's the same for the Mac Studio. But I have doubts since they also added 10G Ethernet, USB ports, etc. [link] [comments]
