Weekly /r/iOSGaming Discussion - What have you been playing lately and what do you recommend?

    Posted: 13 Mar 2022 05:00 PM PDT

Please use this thread to discuss whatever iOS games you've been playing lately. They don't have to be new games, they can be old games and they do not have to be iOS original titles!

As long as it's an iOS game it belongs in here. Make sure to put the name(s) of the game(s) in bold to make it easier for people skimming the thread to see what you're talking about, and if you'd like to make it really convenient turn the game name into a hyperlink that sends people directly to the App Store!

To keep track of the thread, the comments are sorted by "new" by default.

Premium portrait RPG with near-endless grinding and progression?

    Posted: 15 Mar 2022 11:19 AM PDT

The Disgaea series has this amazing grind system where you can level your characters AND equipment essentially forever. I want something like that on iOS where I can grow and grow, but also have some sort of use for that power—maybe randomly generated levels or bosses, something like that.

Premium and portrait are essential too. I'm looking for something I can just open whenever and grind for a couple minutes, within the looming fear that servers will shut down one day.

I know this is very specific, so any suggestions are appreciated 😁

I spent 10 hours playing Tesla vs Lovecraft, here are my thoughts (x-post r/androidgaming)

    Posted: 15 Mar 2022 11:01 AM PDT

There is also a totally optional video review

The game is a top-down twin-stick shooter, which feels a lot like an older game called Crimsonland. This is no surprise, as it was actually made by the same studio.

Probably the worst thing about this game are the controls. It's a standard twin-stick shooter - you use your left thumb to move and your right thumb to aim and shoot. There is auto-aim which is super handy when playing on mobile and having a limited screen estate. You also have a button that allows you to teleport a short distance, which you will use all the time when playing the more difficult levels. So far so good. Killing monsters gives you experience and every time you level up you get to choose a passive ability that makes you stronger. However, the UI just stops working from time to time. Every time you level up, your moving and shooting controls stop working, unless you lift your fingers off the screen and put them down again. Which sucks, in a game that is all about constantly moving around and shooting things. I've died dozens of times because of that particular bug, and I can tell you, it's infuriating. If I didn't love the genre so much, I would probably have stopped playing this game after 2 or 3 hours. On top of that, sometimes your teleport button doesn't work, which pretty much means certain death, since you always use it to avoid a bunch of damage.

With that in mind, when the controls actually work, the main gameplay loop is a lot of fun. Gunning down tons of enemies feels really satisfying, which is made even better by the amazing graphics.

In terms of weapons and enemy variety, it's ok, it could've been better, but it feels fine. You also have quite a lot of passive abilities to choose from when you level up. On top of all that you sometimes pick up active abilities that allow you to cast powerful spells and destroy whole armies at once. The problem here is not really the lack of choice, but the lack of consistency. Obviously, you expect to have a couple of weapons that are completely overpowered. I consider that to be a great addition to any monster shooter, and this game does this perfectly. However, most of the weapons are just useless. And most of the passive abilities are useless as well. And because everything is random, you don't get to decide what weapons or passives you get, and some runs are just doomed. Once you get to the later levels, passing a level is a lot more luck than skill - unless you get the right combination of weapon and passives, you have to run around the map for a very long time, hoping that something useful pops up. Which is not that fun.

The game is structured in levels, with three difficulties, almost like a new game plus kind of thing. After you beat the game for the first time you unlock the next difficulty, where you play the same levels but the enemies are stronger, with the addition of giant bloodthirsty tentacles coming out of the ground in the last difficulty. I'm fine with that - after all, I play the game to kill monsters, and I don't really care if I have to do it on the same levels over and over again.

There is a permanent progression system of sorts, which allows you to upgrade stuff like health, damage, better chance to find good weapons, and so on. However, here once again the main problem is inconsistency. In order to buy upgrades, you need crystals. In the later levels, you sometimes find crystals while fighting the monsters, but before that, your only way to get crystals is by finishing levels at max HP. You can take damage while fighting as long as you heal up before you finish the level. This doesn't really work that well, because you can progress far in the campaign without ever finishing a level on full health. It's super easy to get hit once, and replaying levels just to get those crystals feel boring. I would much rather get a smaller reward after finishing a level. Even if you do finish a level on full health the reward is not that big and the prices of the upgrades are super high. I have almost finished the game and I have managed to buy only 10-15% of the upgrades, so there is something really wrong here.

One really cool thing that the game does in this area is increase the damage against different enemy types when you kill a certain amount of enemies of that type. This means that if you are stuck on a level, and you keep trying, eventually you will be strong enough to mow down the monsters, even if you don't get any crystals. Another thing that makes the main gameplay loop a bit different is the Tesla Mech - a giant robot equipped with machine guns, which you can summon by collecting parts that appear at random places on the level. It helps you a lot, and playing with the Mech is just so satisfying it's amazing.

I think the game was made for PC and then ported for mobile devices. This would explain the crappy controls. It would also explain the graphics. This game looks amazing for a mobile game. I can't remember the last time I played something that shiny on my phone. I tested it on a Pixel 5, so I'm not too sure how it performs on older devices, but it did pretty well on my phone, especially given the number of things happening on screen at the same time, with loads of lighting effects and projectiles. It's just a gorgeous game.

The sounds are great as well. Shooting things sounds good, things dying sounds good, explosions sound good. And there is even a special hard rock soundtrack that plays when you deploy the Tesla Mech, which fits perfectly with the fact that you are a giant machine made for destruction.

That's pretty much it. It's an above-average game, that is pretty close to being amazing. I would recommend you check it out if you are already paying for the Google Play pass. However, because of the bugs, I definitely don't think it's worth paying the full price. I checked the Apple Store and the comments there were similar - people experiencing problems with controls and the game crashing. I think those are all results of a not very well done port.

Does anyone have any chill recommendations for iOS games?

    Posted: 15 Mar 2022 06:00 AM PDT

I'm specifically looking for something that isn't just idle, but just a chill experience. Something you can play while listening to something else. I'm not looking for a specific genere necessarily, but if it requires a lot of thinking, I might be less likely to check it out (like card games heh)

Why don’t I like my favorite PC games on iPad?

    Posted: 15 Mar 2022 04:17 PM PDT

Tropico, Civ, and Xcom are probably my three favorite all-time series on PC. I've tried multiple times to enjoy these on iPad, but I just can't seem to get into any of them.

I THINK it's screen size? Or maybe the touch controls?

I really want to enjoy playing these on iPad. Anyone got ideas on how I can lean to love these games?

    Recommendations?

    Posted: 15 Mar 2022 02:54 PM PDT

I'm looking for something lightweight and pocketable for GeForce Now.

On my downtime at work I've been playing Sifu (highly recommended) on GFN with my Kishi but it's a bit too bulky to have on the sales floor. I can get by with the touch controls but it takes the joy out of the game because of the amount of hand shifting between the on-screen trigger and face buttons.

The absolute minimum I need to solve my problems are triggers so I can use more than just my 2 thumbs to press buttons. My only concern with what I've found on Amazon is the length. The on-screen trigger buttons are a bit lower and more spread out than the shoot buttons on CODM or PUBG

I'm looking for triggers, paddles, attachments, anything I can mostly leave attached to my 12 Pro Max when I slip it into my (larger) jacket pocket.

Dark Nemesis: Multiverse MMORPG Launches March 15

What's your opinion about the app stores fee?

    Posted: 15 Mar 2022 05:41 AM PDT

Hey everyone! Lately, there's been a lot of talking around those 15 to 30% fees that app stores claim from devs. I can't say I truly care about it, but my friend, with whom I work on a reader app, says that we should figure out a way to avoid paying those fees. It seems that he forgot that the app we're working on was meant to be free of charge, if we ever finish it.

Anyways, given that we're still learning and that the app is far from being an MVP, I told him that it's too early to consider this kind of issue and that it's better to focus on the dev process for now. He gave me a speech about how companies like Google and Apple take our money for nothing.

I told him he should forget about it because we still need to practice until we join the devs circle and earn the right to resent app stores' policies. And frankly, having an app like ours that crashes more times than actually works, we're the ones who should pay Google and Apple for accepting it. He didn't get the joke and blamed me for not being woke and not resisting the capitalist plot. Considering his obsession with various conspiracy theories, the argument mainly because of Google and Apple, we started to learn code would only make things worse. I preferred to end the conversation and focus on the UI.

I thought that the conversation was over. But a few days later, he returned with a payment solution for apps he'd previously found online. He insists on using the provided API as an alternative to IAP. I assured him that we'd do that as soon as the app worked.

Personally, I don't have an opinion about this subject yet, but I'm curious what people here think about paying a cut of their future profits to app stores. Will you comply with it, or you'll search for ways out?

Where from and how can I use a web emulator to play Super Mario 64?

That is the only game I need in my life. I never beat the game before my N64 broke down as a kid, I always really loved that game and miss it. I would love to be able to use my xbox controller and not have to use touch controls to play

Will the new iPad Air be a huge step up for gaming?

    Posted: 14 Mar 2022 09:53 AM PDT

I bought the 2020 iPad Air last night, and I was told it's the latest model. After getting home and finding that the new one is due out Friday, I'm wondering if I should return this one and get the new one. I just sold a 12.9" iPad Pro because it was too big for gaming without a controller.

If I'm going to be gaming and using FaceTime primarily, would the new Air be worth the $50-$100 more?

Update: I decided to pay the difference and get the 11" Pro with the M1. It's still in the box until my case arrives tomorrow. Thanks to everyone who corrected the info I had about the A15, and for all your suggestions!
