Dock apps with custom icons randomly revert to originals Posted: 25 Feb 2022 02:18 AM PST I will usually choose my own app icons to either older versions or tweak them myself to integrate better with the design language of all other icons in my pc. When it comes to the apps in the dock, their icons will regress to the ones intended by the developer OR the default folder icon seemingly randomly (not sure if connected to app updates). My only solution so far is instead of locking the apps themselves on the dock, to lock their shortcuts, which ofcourse comes with the disturbing drawback of the shortcut icon ontop of the icon. Does anyone know of a proper way to prevent this annoying automatic app icon reset or a way to remove the shortcut indication from shortcut icons? [link] [comments]

Posted: 24 Feb 2022 06:40 AM PST In case of a stolen macbook, how safe the password protected notes in the Notes app would be? I imagine a malevolent attacker with the macbook in his hands could remove and copy the hard disk and make it run on another machine (assuming the hd is not encrypted), and thus use a newly input general password to also change the password to the Notes app, now being able to access the password protected notes. Is this correct? Or are the notes safe anyway? Or are there some other ways notes could be attacked? [link] [comments]

Can't Upgrade to Catalina - only get "preview" Posted: 24 Feb 2022 03:58 PM PST My late 2012 iMac is capable of upgrading to Catalina (per Apple HW requirements) and it is currently running High Sierra. In the past I used the apple.com link to the download and install older OSs. Catalina is the newest OS this iMac can handle and I need an upgrade for various reasons (Primarily because Photos will not synch with my more modern Mac products....a different thread). When I use the following App Store link provided by apple.com it only gives me a 'Preview' with screen shots and description/updates/etc. No "Open" button. The same link gives me an "Open" button on this machine I am using (MBP late '13 Big Sur). Any ideas??? Very frustrating. Need to synch photos from that older iMac. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/macos-catalina/id1466841314?mt=12 [link] [comments]
Searching hidden files in finder search Posted: 24 Feb 2022 03:55 PM PST Hello. I'm very new to the MacOS world. Doing a search in Finder's search-bar does not seem to include all files in MacOS Monterey's file system. Hidden folders/files seem to be ignored. I know you can shift+command+dot and manually look through. Is there an option to enable this or possibly an app? I'm adjusting to the fact that Mac apps don't clean up after themselves when you uninstall them (move to trash from applications folder). [link] [comments]
Is there a way to virtualize the new Chromium OS Flex or Chromium OS? Posted: 24 Feb 2022 07:35 PM PST Is there a way to virtualize the new OS or the existing Chromium OS? I'm looking to test web apps as they would operate on a Chromebook. Chromium OS looks like the closest I can get to do that without an actual Chromebook. [link] [comments]

how do I vnc into a mac mini after reboot? Posted: 24 Feb 2022 07:12 PM PST I'm in the process of setting up a mac mini as a server. I recently had a power outage and discovered that I could not remotely access it. I'm assuming that it's because I need to log in before I can run a vnc/anything really. Is there some fort of work around for this? [link] [comments]

Posted: 24 Feb 2022 12:37 PM PST Hello all - need some help. MIL is coming to visit and will be staying in our guestroom/my office. She likes to watch TV at night and I was just going to boot my mac to target display mode and use an apple tv but I am realizing now that the M1's are no longer capable of that. I could add a guest user account and use netflix in browser but there isn't a good way to use a remote or remotely control unless using a mouse and keyboard. She could also airplay to it but that would be a bit complicated and challenging trying to stream from her phone. Does anyone have input for using an M1 iMac as a TV? [link] [comments]

Archive folder for Messages and recovering old conversations Posted: 24 Feb 2022 01:53 PM PST So I just found out that apparently all or many of my past conversations that I have closed/deleted in iMessage actually live on as these little files in the "archive" folder. Attachments from those seem to be gone, but the conversations themselves are present although apparently saved by session in a multitude of tiny files. Is there any way to recover those conversations in the Messages app or at least automatically stitch those bits together? [link] [comments]
what is wrong with my dads macbook Posted: 24 Feb 2022 05:09 PM PST it is a 2015 a1502 macbook pro. this thing is like unusablly slow it's even worse than my 2009 macbook pro which was pretty bad. the battery condition is listed as "normal" and it has an ssd + fresh OS install so idk what the problem could be? disable inline attachments in Mail application Posted: 24 Feb 2022 03:44 AM PST by default, the Mail displays pdf, img attachments inline with the text in the email message. However, I do prefer to disable inline image attachment and would like to see the attachments as icons only. I do not see any option of disabling inline pdf/image attachments in preferences. Also try the recommended command : defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing -bool yes but it didint help. Any idea ? [link] [comments]
Can no longer access desktop files??? Posted: 24 Feb 2022 12:35 PM PST I made the mistake of updating my 2019 MacBook to Monterey and now 70% of the files in one of my desktop folders won't open. They're mostly pdf, png, and mov files. Is there a fix for this or should I update to 12.2.1 Monterey? [link] [comments]

What is the "Originals" folder? And how are photos saved Posted: 24 Feb 2022 04:05 PM PST Hello, OK, I'm really bad when it comes to computers and things that relate to it at all so sorry if it takes a bit of explaining for me to understand of if this is a really simple question. Anyways, I noticed recently that photos and videos download (from Google photos or the mail app. I have a Samsung phone and I'm not sure how else to transfer photos between my phone and mac besides emailing it to myself or using Google photos) don't immediately get saved to the photos app. I need to save it to somewhere like desktop or a folder first, then drag and drop it into the photos app myself which then leads to the problem of having photos scattered all over the place and in different files. I can't delete these photos that are on my desktop or in other files without the photos app telling me the "original file is missing" yet I have photos that I saved years ago that weren't first downloaded onto the desktop. The photos I downloaded a while ago seem to all be stored in a file titled "Originals" with different names and organised in numbers and letters. Photos and videos in the originals file don't clutter my desktop or other places but I can't seem to save new ones to this "Originals" file, so now my macbook Pro is starting to get a little messy. I've also noticed when I'm in the photos app and I use "Get Info" on photos that aren't saved to Originals, it gives me the option to "Show Referenced File in Finder" When I delete the photo off the desktop after just saving it to the photos app, then try opening the photo in the app, I get a massage that says " Missing File Photos with unavailable original files can not be opened the original photo (photo name here) is either offline or cannot me found. Click "Find Original" to reconnect" What is the difference between photos and videos saved in desktop compared to older photos and videos saved in the "Originals" folder? How do I keep my photos and videos from cluttering up my desktop or other files? Why can't I just save it directly to the photos app? I'm sorry it it's hard to understand the problem I'm trying to describe, I don't know all the proper terms to explain it normally. [link] [comments]
Connect to AirDisk in iOS Files Posted: 24 Feb 2022 04:02 PM PST I have a hard drive connected to an AirPort Extreme. I can access on my Mac, but I don't know how to enter its info into Files.app on iOS to access the shared drive from there. I have it on a static IP. [link] [comments] |
