Receiving my first MacOS laptop from work soon. How to smoothly transition from Ubuntu?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 03:52 AM PST

    Hey

I've been using Ubuntu or Debian-based distros for the last 3 years. I've never used MacOS before, and I'm going to get one from my work soon.

What is the important stuff to know for the transition to be the smoothest and to avoid gotchas? For instance, I know brew is the package manager. What else?

    Any alternative to Wallpaper Engine?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 06:32 AM PST

As far as I know, Wallpaper Engine doesn't work for macOS yet.

I would like to use an animated wallpaper but I can't find any free alternative software to achieve this. Could someone help me find something good and powerful enough to allow me to use dynamic medias such as a .webm or .mp4 file?

I heard of Dynamic Wallpaper Engine but it's paid and doesn't seem as good as Wallpaper Engine.

This is strange as up until now I didn't face any issue. My Mac was running on high Sierra until now . It's giving me the same problem with my older HD. I really need to sort this out ASAP as my work will get stalled. Any help please 🙏

Discord with Bluetooth headphones causes the sound to mess up periodically

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 04:00 AM PST

    Hello!

So I have a bit of a problem on my MacBook, running Monterey 12.2, in which whenever I am in a Discord call, or any voice communication application, the sound completely messes up for a few seconds causing me not to understand a single word the person I am talking to is saying. This only happens when I am connected to my Bluetooth headphones.

It starts by making a weird little beep noise and then proceeds to turn the person I am talking to into Godzilla with this low rumbling kind of sound. It goes on for a second or two and then reverts to normal. This gets repeated once every minute to 5 minutes making it incredibly frustrating trying to do any work when talking to someone.

One thing I noticed was that whenever this happens, macOS tries to open the Music application by itself, every, single, time. I installed an app called NoTunes which prevents the Music app from being able to open at all.

Now when it does this it sometimes opens the Spotify app instead or unpauses Spotify on my PC if I have it open and paused.

It's incredibly annoying... Does anyone know how to handle this or at least share a similar experience?

    160. In Finder , if we select a file using mouse and hit <enter> we can directly rename the file
    161. In Finder also hit <cmd>+<t> to open a new tab
    162. A Finder window if we double lick on the horizontal/vertical edge of that window it will snap to the edge of desktop in that direction , if we hold <option> and double click on right side of window that will snap both right and left side to desktop edges (it will be stretched horizontally) and vice a versa for vertical , if we hold <option> and and double click on corner of a windows it will snapped in every direction to the desktop
    163. If we hold down <option> and click any item from  menu from upper left side things will happen without a dialog (by holding <option> and clicking on system information will directly open the info rather than small dialog which it inherently opens)
    164. For any application , if we use Help menu search option we can find any associated available command for that application and also it's hierarchal structure in the menu
    165. In Finder menu -> edit -> show clipboard will show clipboard contents
    166. In system preferences -> accessibility -> zoom we can have keyboard shortcut , there are also a lot of features there[under Display more options and in audio also and also Siri we can type to Siri]
    167. In system preferences -> keyboard -> Text we can have text replacements macros that are useful
    168. In System preferences -> displays , we can change the orientation and places of multiple displays as we want but we can see that one display has a menu bar at top (in the preview there) , we can also drag that menu bar and move to other screen to make it main screen
    169. In the dock , on launchpad icon we hold <ctrl> and click that will pop up a menu of apps and we can launch them directly without actually opening launchpad
    170. IF we configure all spotlight settings in system preferences , we can do basic math , advanced math, math functions, unit conversion, curency conversion, weather ,sports results ,stocks ,flights , location ,wikipedia
    171. Once we search in spotlight we can see there are some searches in a section and there are other searched items in another section we can hit <cmd>+<arrow> to jump to next section of search items
    172. We can drag and attach a folder in the dock and by right clicking we can decide how it will respond to a normal click
    173. While writing text we can hit <delete> key to delete but if we want to delete in opposite direction then hit <function>+<delete>
    174. We can select text by holding <shift> and using arrows , we can select in terms of words(quickly select) by holding down <shift>+<option> and arrow keys
    175. While searching for anything in any text after search if we have highlighted multiple text searches then to go to next searched item hit <cmd>+<g> and to go to previous searches item <cmd>+<shift>+<g>
    176. In the compose mail window , we can drag and drop image as an attachment , but on the right side you can choose the resolution of the image using three options (large, medium ,small) so we can decide if we want to compress an image while sending if it is too large
    177. If we have multiple Desktops then we can switch to them using <ctrl>+<right/left>
    178. If we we open open preferences of any file by right clicking on it and make <stationary pad> then when we open that file again the system will always create a copy of that file and open so the edits won't happen to the original file
    179. We can enable alternate mouse control from system preferences so if our mouse dies due to some reason we can move the mouse pointer on screen using keyboard keys
    180. Hit <ctrl>+<up> to open mission control

Somebody know what ~/Library/Feedback\ Assistant is?

Hello, I've found that the given path contains a dump of my documents folder. It's not an alias or something it's an old state. I used the Feedback Manager before, but I never uploaded my whole documents folder. I also have no Drafts in Feedback Manager saved.

Seeking ways to open a .TIB file on macOS

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 06:26 AM PST

A few years ago when I still used a pc that was about to crash on me a company made backups of the 2 harddrives. Now years and the jump to the Mac mini m1 later I still have those files.

Is there any way to open them and view/ extract the content? I've stumbled upon Acronnis Cyber Protect Home Office (formally Acronis True Image). And if im not mistaken that is how the tip files once where made.

changing the resolution without changing the size

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 05:00 AM PST

I want to know if it is possible to change the resolution of my Mac without changing the size of everything, I would rather be able to use my 2560 by 1600 display but beyond 1050 everything starts getting tiny. I have a 2017 13 MacBook Pro if that helps.

Is this normal after a software update?!

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 05:00 AM PST

M1 Pro. I saw a software update for 12.2.1. I installed it and it told me to restart my computer to complete the update. I boot into a COMPLETELY NEW LOOKING OS. The lock screen had the default background (it did still show my account name, however).

When I logged in, it was now asking me to select my theme (light/dark), stuff like "do you want to share analytics with apple", "do you want to sync storage with iCloud", etc. with a completely new background. I was convinced my OS had completely been reinstalled!

I freaked out, because I was already on version 12 prior to this - this did NOT seem typical for a small sub-version update. I held the Touch ID button, then it rebooted and I had my OS back (saw my same lock screen, logged in just fine).

No idea why this happened. Is this normal?

How to do full iPhone backups to Mac/External SSD?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2022 08:09 PM PST

I am a little confused here. All the time, I used the finder to back up my iDevices. But I heard of some apps for backups, like iMazing. Why should I use a 3rd party app to backup my iDevices to mac? Mac already provides a solution, so what is the advantage of apps like iMazing?

And what's the best backup solution available in your opinion?

How to make iCloud Drive files visible on desktop?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 04:32 AM PST

I noticed that whenever I add a file to iCloud drive, it disappears from the desktop, not sure why this is. Can a file be on both iCloud drive and visible on the desktop at the same time? I would love to be able to quickly access my iCloud files on the desktop, surely there is a way ...

How to modify the default icons of file types that an app opens but are missing from the Resources folder?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 04:10 AM PST

The most common online advice on customizing various file type icons of an app is via the Finder\Context Menu\Show Packages Content\Resources folder. Some apps are readily modifiable because their designated icons are easy to locate. But how do you customize apps without any visible .icns files (except the AppIcon.icns), meaning there are only a bunch of files but not sure which ones can be edited to change the generic icons used by the app.

    Title.

    MBP-Mid2012, 500GB HDD, 4GB RAM, 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5, Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB.

Main use is academic, PDF viewing, Word, PPT, Excel, Web Browsing and researching.

    Apple keyboard battery level discrepancy

I have newly charged GP 2700 batteries in my Apple keyboard, but the level shown in control center is 71%. However, in the system preferences of keyboard battery is shown 100%,

Why is this happening? Is there a "cure"?

P.S. I'm on the latest Monterey with M1.
