    Onyx Developer needs some help

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 12:18 PM PST

If you've ever used the Mac utility Onyx the developer could use your help.

This is being shared from another forum:

We talk often about the great system utility Onyx. Today when I went to the site I saw this plea...

The development of my applications is not discontinued.
Unfortunately, I do not have my Intel-based iMac anymore.
I would like to buy a new Mac M1 (MacBook Air or Pro), but I am unemployed and cannot buy on credit.
If you want to help me to purchase a new Mac M1 so that I can continue development, click the Donate button

I urge you to help him/her out, as I did. This tool has been around since the earliest days of OSX. It would be a shame to see it go away. If you've never donated to them before (or it's been a long time), and you use their utility, I'd say you owe it to them.

    https://www.titanium-software.fr/en/onyx.html

They also provide the cool utility called Deeper, that lets you tweak hidden system settings.

How can i find the files that are actually taking up the space? Is there an app I can use?

Is there a picture-in-picture mode for Facetime on MacOS like there is on iOS and iPadOS?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2022 12:12 AM PST

I really like Zoom's feature of minimizing the call to a small rectangle so that I can see the speaker and move the little window around on my Macbook screen. I noticed that Apple adopted this feature too on iPadOS and iOS with Facetime. I am wondering if there is something similar for macOS that I may be missing out on. I have tried the "Always On Top" feature but sometimes the window can be too big that it blocks out too much of my screen. Thanks in advance!

Pop up asking for "Local Items" keychain

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 10:17 PM PST

Just updated to 12.2.1 and when logging in after the reboot I got prompting by Adobe_CCXProcess asking to use the "Local Items" keychain (I do have CC installed). Did some quick googling and apparently this happens after macOS updates all the time?? I just wondering if anyone could explain the reason for the pop-up and was it okay that I gave my password to it?

Is there a way to mitigate WindowServer memory leak in scaled resolutions?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 01:21 PM PST

Is there a way to mitigate WindowServer memory leak in scaled resolutions?

Hello there, I'm using M1 Macbook Air(8 GB base model) with macOS Monterey 12.2 installed. Since the laptop has arrived, I'm having problems with WindowServer process leaking memory. And no, it's not caused by Chrome, or cursor thing. It's caused because I'm using a scaled display resolution(particularly, the more space option). If I use the default screen resolution, the memory leak does not happen.

    https://preview.redd.it/kc9icgiqo2h81.png?width=1560&format=png&auto=webp&s=ff5ed83d63ce0d056d3827d6b1b721b5d7a596b6

However, that's not a feasible option for me, I just want having more screen real estate. And yes, I know I can restart WindowServer process and get that leaked memory area freed. Is there a way to mitigate this problem without restarting anything?

Also, I've done some reading and notice the problem exists for a loooong while, I think since macOS Mojave. How Apple can't fix this problem for years?

Is there any data on which browser has the best performance for macOS?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 04:22 AM PST

I know there are a number of topics open with browser questions and which browser to use. I have all the more visible browsers installed - i.e. Edge, Chrome, Vivaldi, Opera, Brave, Firefox - and I am currently using Firefox.

    - Vivaldi and Opera are good, but that lck of Airdrop function is bad for me; also, Vivaldi still didn't develop an iOS app;

    - Opera wants to push users to use its internal system for sharing links, notes, etc. I also have Orion browser installed bot on Mac and iPhone but it is still in dev state.

Of all I have read so far, opinions differ on which browser reflects best on the battery. Safari, yes, it is light, but if I start working something heavier, I find it at the moment is not the best choice. Better is on iOS.

I read articles on browsers and see recommendations but didn't find data on performance on macOS.

How Can I Get My M1 Mac to Allow My SSD To Be Recognized By This App?

I'm trying to set up the fingerprint scanner, and despite the computer recognizing the device itself, unfortunately, the application for set up does not...Any help would bet appreciated!

Sound Output and Microphone access issues, Monterey 12.1, M1 Pro 14in

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 07:46 PM PST

Hi all, first time Mac user, picked up this machine last month.

I've been having audio issues non-stop during my regular use, I usually plug in some headphones through 3.5mm jack and use a USB microphone for calls (plugged in through a dock).

    • Issue : Sounds in other apps are lowered in volume during calls (Whatsapp, Zoom, Teams, Skype, whatever).

Is this a "feature"? Is there any way to turn this off, Windows allows this option. I have to turn up the volume to hear other apps and this makes the caller volume really loud and I have to change the volume manually each time.

    • Issue: External microphone "not available" during Whatsapp desktop app calls.

Before I initiate a call, the microphone in use indicator is off.

Initiating the call, the indicator turns on (as expected) but in app my external microphone is "unavailable"

In addition to this, I have quit some other messengers that seemingly don't have any calls ongoing but they remind me "quitting the app will end the call" but nothing is going on!

Is there a way to tell which apps specifically are using the microphone? I've installed Oversight but this does not help too much.

    • Issue: 3.5mm headphone output not working after wake from sleep

I've found this other thread on the topic, but in my case unplugging and plugging back in the headphones into the jack does not resolve the problem. I have to restart the machine to get any sound output through the headphones.

This renders sleep completely unusable. I work with my mac at a workstation so my peripherals are usually plugged into the computer. Having to restart every time I sleep the computer just to get headphone sound is inexcusable.

Mac OS wizards, I call to you for help!

Restore Data from 2015 MBP to M1 MBP

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 07:19 PM PST

I have a 2015 MacbookPro running El Capitan and was planning to migrate to the new 16 inch M1 MacbookPro.

    1) Will I be able to restore all my files from my current Time Machine backup onto the new MBP without needing to change the operating system on the new MBP? I just want the files. Apps and app data isn't important.

    2) Would it be better to just copy the "User" folder from my current MBP onto a hard drive and then transfer all the relevant files/folders onto the new MBP?

Just wondering if there are going to be compatibility issues while transferring data since I plan on formatting my current MBP.

Why does Safari squish the aspect ratio when watching some fullscreen stuff?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 06:53 PM PST

Safari will try and make the black bars shorter and end up squishing it and making it look off. Tested in chrome and it was fine. Tested in Edge and it also had this same issue.

MBA M1 memory mostly under pressure with normal load

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 12:51 PM PST

I've got 2020 MBA 8GB variant. I'm a developer and build web apps on node. The issue I'm facing that my laptop memory is always under pressure. I've around 45-50 tabs open on my browser. I'm running VSCode and a node instance.

    Activity Monitor: Screenshot-2022-02-11-at-12-01-16-AM.png (639×535) (ibb.co)

That's the only major load on the system, as you can see in the screenshot the memory pressure is mostly red. I've seen another M1 MBP with 8 GB ram which is running heavier softwares but memory pressure is rarely red.

I'm concerned that something is wrong with my system. Any help would be appreciated.

M1 Air Monterey (12.1) not detecting sound output and input devices

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 10:23 AM PST

M1 Air Monterey (12.1) not detecting sound output and input devices

Must not be a hardware issue because connected audio devices still work (both external headphones and the mac's speakers) and can still record audio but only from some third-party apps like FB Messenger.

Already tried plugging and unplugging the headphones but nothing happens. Regular restarting fixes it but still randomly goes back like this. Because of this issue, some apps don't get any input (mic) devices to point to so I can't get any audio in. Has anyone else experienced this? How'd you fix it? I can't keep restarting the computer every time this happens.

    No mic found for dictate

    No sound output devices found

    No sound output devices found

    AudioMidi interface

Sound Output Preferences on menu bar still works

    Time Machine Best Practice

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 08:50 AM PST

I'm looking for guidance on best practices for using TM to back up multiple Macs.

2 x M1 MBA (2020) (one Monterey, one Big Sur)
    1 x M1 Mini (Late 2020) (Big Sur)

All three machines are 512/8 models, nothing special and not especially full, since I'm pretty anal about keeping space use to a minimum.

I have a plethora of USB drives I can devote to this exercise. My thought was to take an old 1.5TB drive and partition it three ways, one for each machine, hang it on the Mini, and point the MBAs to it for network use. The Mini is on 24x7.

The 1.5TB drive is a USB2 unit, and is proving sufficient just for the Mini, giving me backups for many months. I understand I'll have to wipe the drive and redo the backup on the Mini, but this doesn't bother me.

    Questions:

    • Will this work this way at all, or am I kissing up the wrong tree? If I am, can someone point me to a better approach?
    • Is partitioning the drive in this way even necessary, or can I just make it one partition for the three machines to share?
    • I assume that TM on the MBAs can cope with being disconnected when on the go, yes?
    • Larger drives are available. Should I use one of those instead?

    Thanks for your thoughts!

is it safe to force quit disk utility while formatting an ssd?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 03:19 PM PST

So i was trying to format this 4TB ssd into a MS DOS (FAT) format without knowing what it was. After trying a few times and getting an error i decided to lower the speed in the security settings (i seriously dont know why. ig i panicked). So now, after i googled what an MS DOS format is and realizing i made a mistake, i dont want to wait like 10 hours only to get an error. It has been loading for three hours now and it's at like 15%. Is it safe for me to force quit or should i just wait? i really dont want to ruin my ssd

1 Apple ID shared by two user accounts

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 11:18 AM PST

Hi there, I had a question that I can't seem to find the answer to... I have a MacBook and wanted to have 1 personal account and 1 other for work purposes.

On this work account I wanted to link it to my Apple ID so I could use Messages. However, I don't want my Mac to have two full copies of my Messages (and other iCloud data) fully downloaded wasting space for both user accounts, as my hard drive is only 250GB. I know you can toggle certain iCloud features but I would like Messages enabled for sure.

If you have an iCloud account shared by two users accounts on a Mac, does it download all imessages and photos twice? Or is it 'smart' enough to download everything once and have that data accessible by both user accounts?

2018 iMac Upgrade to Monterey Failure...

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 11:13 AM PST

SO was trying to upgrade is 2018 iMac to Monterey from Catalina. Update failed - It boots up with a file icon with a question mark on it. Doesn't seem to recognize hard drive. In Recovery Mode, It shows up on Disk Utility as APFS Physical Storage but won't boot to it and running First Aid returns an error. When trying to use Recovery Mode to restore macOS, it doesn't see the drive (but it does see my attached Time Machine backup drive)

Have a backup but it's old, so I haven't tried reformatting yet. Any suggestions before I do?

    Thanks.

How do you know that an app does not see your private information when you make an in-app purchase?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 02:56 PM PST

How do you know that an app does not see your private information when you make an in-app purchase?

I'm confused by this. When I click (in the app) to make an in-app purchase, a dialog box pops up that asks for my Apple ID and Password. Fine; that's all good. But what confuses me is why the app itself (Infuse in this case) is shown as the owner of the dialog box.

Shouldn't the App Store or some system service be the owner of the dialog box?

How do I know that this is a legitimate dialog box presented by the App Store and not a rogue dialog box owned by the app which then activates the purchase behind the scenes?

How do I know that the app doesn't (and more importantly, can't) see my Apple ID and Password if I enter those in the dialog box?

About to make an in-app purchase
