I’d like to start seeing Apple update their in house apps more regularly compared to annual updates.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2022 10:25 AM PST

I'm an avid user of the reminders app for example, and while it's come a long way…I think Apple could be better off updated and adding new useful features to their in house apps like the competition does (lookin at you mail app too!) rather than keep any substantial updates to their yearly IOS upgrades. I think that would allow them to keep in step with their competition/keep things competitive with App Store developers (in a good way). I love the integration Apple apps have but hate that I always have to wait a year to get new features compared to others.

    Thoughts?

Edit: for clarification I'm talking about Apple adding new features to their in house apps using updates via the AppStore, not a software update.

Introducing TouchRuler; a ruler for your Mac's Touch Bar (and display)!

    Posted: 01 Jan 2022 09:18 PM PST

Hello r/Apple! I'm the developer of an app on the Mac App Store called "TouchRuler", a ruler for your Mac's display, and Touch Bar!

I made it for myself 4 months ago as a tool I could use to quickly measure real-world items on the fly, and then I decided to work on it a little more and post it on the Mac App Store!

With colourful themes, precision automatic and manual calibration, and of course an elegant ruler for your Touch Bar; TouchRuler is a fun spin on other rulers on the App Store, while retaining a ruler's usefulness.

Tell me what you think, I'm open for feedback, and answering any questions regarding the app! I hope you all like it.

Introducing a simplistic Safari extension to view your cookies

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 05:07 AM PST

I created another Safari extension, albeit a very simple one. I found it very difficult to quickly find a list of cookies that are used when I visit a certain website. It is either to be found very deep in the Safari settings or you would have to install apps that gives you the full Web Inspector overhead.

So I created a very simple Safari extension that allows you to view the current website's cookies with a simple click.

The extension reads the cookies of the current website with Javascript. It accesses only the website you are currently visiting, and only for display purposes. Based on Safari permissions, it only gets access to the current tab and only upon you actively clicking the extension button.

    It works very simple:

    1. Turn on View Cookies in Settings -> Safari Extensions -> View Cookies
    2. In Safari, visit any website
    3. Click the View Cookies extension to view the cookies used on the current website

I hope this small extension is useful for the one or the other. You can currently download it for free at https://apps.apple.com/us/app/view-cookies/id1602255652

    Thanks for any feedback

“Find My” App for AirPod Pro is Completely Useless

    Posted: 01 Jan 2022 10:39 AM PST

So I got some lovely new AirPod Pros for Christmas this year! Hooray, right?

I was kinda skeptical because I already had some Mifo's that had been going strong and had crazy long battery life, but I also often lost either the headphones or the charging case constantly.

So Christmas morning my fiancé says the AirPod Pros had the ability to have their location tracked in the "Find My" app and I think "Finally! I can stop losing my headphones!" I get them all set up in the "Find My" app and check on them every now and then to see they're connected with a green dot and nearby!

So then this morning I go looking for my AirPods and can't immediately find them, so I check the "Find My" app. They show a last known location and it's my work where I was yesterday. They also show the dot greyed out and googling this reveals that my phone is no longer connected to them, probably because they're out of range or the battery is dead on the charging case.

Oh no! I throw on slippers and hightail it to work. I go through every room I was in. I use the chirpy sound feature constantly to try to locate them. I find the laundry bag my scrubs were in from the previous day (thank god it's Saturday and the laundry bags haven't been taken away) and I tear open the bag to search the pockets. No luck. So I retrace my steps. I go to my mom's house since that's where I went last night. I repeat the chirpy sound function while scouring. No luck. I search my car, I search outside where my dog had pooped thinking the case fell out of my coat pocket when I got a poop bag out. I search the internet for answers and have a little cry!

I decide that either they were left behind at work and stolen, or the case's battery is dead even though they'd just been charged the day before. I half-heartedly go through my work bag one last time and find the case has fallen into a little side pocket in my bag.

I open the case and the AirPods and case connect to my phone and reveal nearly full battery life for all devices! They are now magically locatable on my "Find My" app! I can even make the AirPods emit helpful little chirping sounds!

So yeah, I'm posting this because I'm fucking furious and to hopefully help someone like me in the future. What's the point of this feature if it just decides it doesn't wanna work? I literally would've been better off just looking around the house for my lost Mifo's like usual.

TLDR: First world problem. If you're struggling to locate your AirPod Pros and you're using the "Find My" app, don't trust what it tells you because it doesn't work. Just look in your bag again.

    What Do I Win?

The winner will receive a brand new Apple Watch Series 3 purchased directly from the Apple website shipped straight to any address that you provide. As long as I can directly enter your address on the Apple website and ship it off to you, you're eligible to participate!

    Rules

    • All you need to do is read this thread and comment on it and you're entered!
    • Only one entry per person though - no one should be entering multiple comments.
    • You can comment anything you would like, but if you have nothing to comment tell me your new years resolution!
    • You don't need to download Autopilot Diet, but if you do let me know your thoughts in the comments.

    Autopilot Diet

5 years ago I learned the diet principles that helped me lose 26 pounds in 26 weeks: Before and After. I recently released a free weight loss app that helps you follow the same diet principles to lose weight. It's called Autopilot Diet.

How It Works: You log what you eat then enter your weight every week to get new realistic diet targets - that keep you on track to continue losing weight.

The key differences between this calorie counter app and the others are:

    • It focuses on your week as a whole. So if you over eat one day you can gradually make it up during the remainder of your week and still lose weight.
    • Your calorie targets are automatically updated at the end of every week based on what you ate, your activity and the weight you lost so that you don't plateau and continue losing weight.
    • You only need to weigh in once a week. The body does a lot of weird things over the course of a week, water retention, bloating, etc that can make you unmotivated if you step on the scale everyday, but if you look at your weight trends over the same day at the same time every week you will be a lot happier which will keep you motivated.
    • You can take a 24 hour diet assessment where you log what you normally eat, then your targets for your first week are based on that assessment. This provides a very accurate and realistic method for starting a diet.
    • You can search for foods right from the home screen. As soon as you open the app you can start searching for food that you ate to log it. This sounds basic but is lacking from the competition.

It's free, and you can get it on the iPhone App Store and for Android on the Google Play Store

I would be happy to respond to your feedback and any questions in the comments below, thanks.

    Seem familiar?

It should! I based this giveaway off of others that have been posted here using this open source library to pick the winner.

    tl:dr

Launched a calorie counter app that auto adjusts your calories every week based on your actual progress so you don't plateau and continue losing weight. You can download it for free on the iPhone App Store and the Google Play Store Comment below for a chance to win an Apple Watch.
