Posted: 06 Dec 2021 04:54 AM PST I'm currently in Hong Kong and needed to find the subway station. For some reason, Apple Maps wouldn't show the subway station. So I asked a person and was able to find it. When I arrived at my destination, I used Apple Maps to find a restaurant to go for lunch. I can see a TGI Friday's is nearby, so I follow the map to get there. Nope, doesn't exist. So I find another restaurant (Cali-Mex), and follow Apple Maps to get there. Nope, doesn't exist either. I'm now lost and want to make my way back to the subway station. But of course, Apple Maps won't show the subway station. So what is the point of this app? It is not useful. I've since installed Google Maps and it (a) shows all subway stations and (b) doesn't show these non-existent restaurants. Frustrating. [link] [comments]

Google put more effort into removing PiP from YouTube on Safari than actually implementing it. Posted: 05 Dec 2021 08:19 PM PST When the built in safari media player on iOS received the update that allowed Picture in Picture, it worked just fine with YouTube. Google didn't have to a single thing to allow iOS users to use a feature supported by the built in safari media player. It was the same exact media player that was used before by safari, it just had a new feature that worked with iOS. What google did do is go out of their way to actually brick the feature in order to force people to use the app and get PiP by paying for the YouTube red subscription. I've seen scumbags but that's a whole new level. I'm so happy now that there are extensions that workaround their clownish effort. [link] [comments]

Found my AirPods Pro because of Find My Posted: 06 Dec 2021 06:47 AM PST I was taking my regular commute today, and got off the bus as normal. It has been snowing the night before (I live in Canada) so I was pretty pre-occupied in getting through the fresh snow and getting to work. As I get to work, I notice that my AirPods are missing, and look in the Find My app. They're about 5KM away from where I was, but hadn't been seen in 30 or so minutes. I just assumed that I had left them on the bus, and I'd have to wait for them to get to lost & found. I enabled Lost Mode and waited a bit, and then got a notification that Find My had seen them, but even closer to where I was from the last time they had updated. They were in the general area of where I got off the bus... Que one quick walk over to the bus stop, and lo-behold I found them. You can imagine an all-white AirPods case on top of fresh white snow isn't the easiest to spot, but using the locate feature I found them. No doubt if it hasn't been snowing, they probably would have already been picked up. I'm so grateful for Find My right now. [link] [comments]

Is anyone else frustrated by the changes to the Files app PDF viewer in iPadOS 15? Posted: 06 Dec 2021 04:22 PM PST The page bar is now on the left instead of the right, and the quick scroll with one drag is gone. So now, instead of using my dominant hand to scroll quickly through a PDF with one drag, now I have to scroll multiple times on the other side. Assuming there's no way to revert to the old behavior, is this annoying anyone else? I think would be cool to be able to be able to move the page bar to either side too. [link] [comments]

Why “smash ‘n grab” at an Apple store? Posted: 05 Dec 2021 01:56 PM PST Quick question, why do people perform a smash 'n grab at Apple stores? Aren't all the products on the floor remotely managed? Can't Apple just remotely disable the device? The only thing I can think of is that they're sold as "used" and when an unknowing buyer receives a stolen device, it's legit, but doesn't work. Thanks to the Airtag I got my stolen bicycle back Posted: 05 Dec 2021 09:06 AM PST This happened to me last night. My bicycle was stolen from my yard. I found out it was stolen 10 minutes later (I have a homekit camera so I saw him stole it). I called the police and explained them I have a AirTag on my bicycle and I can track it's location. The police went to the location but could not find anything. I told them if I would be on the location I could pin point the exact location. I went with the police to the location and used the nearby function and it directly connected in the area of a garagebox that was in front of a house. I could even hear it ring when I used the play sound function. The police opened the garagebox and there was my bicycle with other bicycles that were probably stolen. They arrested the man that lived there and I got my bicycle back. I already was a big Airtag fan but getting my bicycle back because I tagged my bicycle is just the best! I recommend everyone to get one for bicycles or cars. (I'm not a native English speaker so if my English is not the best, sorry) [link] [comments]
Stolen Apple Watch Location Updated Weeks of Being Dead Posted: 05 Dec 2021 01:41 PM PST On November 9th, my Apple Watch died while I was on my honeymoon in a different country. On the 12th, the dead watch was stolen from my luggage, along with several other items. It was reported stolen on the 15th and the location on Find My has stayed the same since it died on the 9th. This morning, at 12:06 am, the location updated for a brief second and says it is within 5 feet of where I was. I thought, surely this is a glitch. I even dug the charger out from the drawer it was in to make sure. I know it is not with me as it was in a box of items that were all taken and I definitely didn't charge it at 12:06 am. I reported this to Apple and their specialist said that my husband must have it OR the thieves came from Jamaica and were outside my window at 12:06 am. The other option is my neighbors also happened to be in Jamaica and stole my watch and waited a few weeks to try and turn it on. All of this to say, I'm pretty sure it is a glitch, but the employees I spoke to were all adamant that this isn't a glitch and that there's an Apple Watch conspiracy within my apartment building. Has anyone else seen a weird glitch like that since they did the most recent update? [link] [comments]

Stolen iPhone ending up in Huafa Rd. Shenzhen (China) "iPhone Warehouse/Cure/Refurbish" Posted: 05 Dec 2021 10:36 AM PST Had my brand new iPhone 13 Pro stolen in London over 1 month ago. It is now located by Find My on Huafa Road, Shenzhen, China. A quick Google search ("huafa road shenzhen iphone") links Huafa Rd to several companies/services for iPhone refurbishing, repairs, phone replicas, parts etc... I am just shocked that these sorts of black markets are still profitable and a big company like Apple can't do anything to stop this? [link] [comments]

I found the cause of the corrupted grey areas when transfering photos to a Windows PC! Posted: 05 Dec 2021 07:43 AM PST I guess quite a few Windows users have run into this issue - if you use "Keep Originals" and also use HEIC, then your portrait/edited photos show up with grey corruption when transfering straight to a PC. Like described here https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251982667 and in other threads on this subreddit. The original images named IMG_xxxx.HEIC are fine, but IMG_Exxxx.HEIC are corrupted. So, I did some sleuthing with a hex editor on the transfered pictures, and I just realized the IMG_Exxxx.HEIC images are NOT ACTUALLY HEIC AT ALL! They are actually JPEGs. And this seems to be part of the issue. I repeat. The IMG_Exxxx.HEIC images are NOT ACTUALLY HEIC - THEY ARE JPEG images with the wrong extension! I tried emailing myself the picture, and got a JPEG, that works. Further examination reveals that apart from a few bytes of metadata, the JPEG I got via email matches byte for byte with the IMG_Exxxx.HEIC file, EXCEPT THE HEIC FILE IS SHORTER - that is why the grey areas are there - the file is truncated, and the grey area is the missing data. I also tried uploading the image via the Dropbox app, and got the WORKING IMAGE THAT IS ACTUALLY A HEIC through that. Another curious thing is that the filesize of the Dropbox file (which is actually the correct HEIC file) is always 512 bytes smaller than the broken misnamed JPEG file. So it seems like in the transfer process, a JPEG is made, like when you pick "Automatic" instead of "Keep Originals", but the phone takes the NAME AND SIZE of the HEIC file, but the DATA from the JPEG file. I suspect the error is on Apple's side, since I saw a Linux user struggling with the same issue, though I won't put the blame for certain there yet. [link] [comments]

iMessage - audio message fast forward and rewind concept Posted: 05 Dec 2021 10:49 AM PST https://i.imgur.com/7NKjp1S.jpg I mocked up this idea for fast forwarding and rewinding audio messages is iMessage. WhatsApp and other messaging apps have a far superior audio message implementation in terms of being able to fast forward and rewind a message. Since Apple always needs to do something different, I came up with this concept where the play and pause button is what you use to fast forward and rewind. The button would move along the voice message as you listen to it, then you drag the button to go to the spot you want to hear. This would allow pretty precise dragging anywhere along the message and would be easier to click than a small dot like with some apps. [link] [comments] |
