    Airplay software is so garbage

    Posted: 27 Dec 2021 07:53 PM PST

The concept of airplay is great and very useful for lots of things. However, it is so extremely finicky that it almost never works the first time. Any time I try to stream a movie to my tv it just flashes on and off. Also, when screen mirroring, I pull the movie up and it doesn't fill the screen with the movie. There's a black border around it that makes the movie like half the size. Overall, great concept, but almost never works 👎

Edit: by the way, I use and Apple TV 4K and trying to watch a YouTube video

    Hey /Apple

Thanks for Promo Sunday. Hope y'all are enjoying Boxing Day! I'm here to ask for a few minutes to talk about my new app: Search Ban. There's also a small giveaway of 10 licenses— info at the end of the post.

Spam in search engine results suck

Hot take: Google improved search by making the web worse at the same time. Ever since Google's PageRank was introduced, the internet is now up to the brim with absolute dreck -- copycat sites, keyword stuffed gibberish, the list goes on. While Google used to do a good job at filtering out the garbage, it's been getting progressively worse for the last few years.

Specially if you're a developer searching for programming related questions, you're inundated with sites that literally copy StackOverflow questions and answers and present it as their own. Waste of internet space!

    Introducing Search Ban

Finally fed up, I've built a super tiny, super minimal Safari web extension to deal with all this BS. It's called Search Ban, the hammer icon for the mental association I made with ban hammering folks back in my IRC and 1.6 days. You can get it on the App Store or read more here.

Search Ban has no BS — no ads, no in-app purchases, and no subscriptions. Just buy it once and use it forever. As I just launched, I'm running a promo till the end of the month: a 25% discount bringing it down to a nice $2.99. Otherwise, it's a one time purchase of $3.99.

    What does it do?

Search Ban gets you better search results through two ways:

    • The app ships with an extensive list of spam sites which are automatically filtered from your Google search results.
    • If you have personal nuisances you want removed, you can mark them as spam once on the search page and they will get removed from your results every time. (Feel free to email me as well so I can improve search for everyone else too!)

Banning is automatic and banning new sites is simply a matter of tapping on an icon once. It's easy as 1-2-3 and has been made with non-technical users in mind.

Search Ban is under active development. Right now, it only works on Google's normal search results. I'm working on adding support for image search (byebye Pinterest) as well as alternate search engines including DuckDuckGo and Bing.

I'm also actively trawling the web looking for spam sites that manage to get massively high search engine placements and adding them to Search Ban's default list.

    Privacy First

All the functionality/pattern matching/blocking happens on your device with no data getting exfiltrated. Even something as regular as app analytics or telemetry has been stripped away in the name of privacy. At my day job, I am responsible for web/asset security at a billion dollar software company and in my free time, my wife and I run a privacy conscious safety app — privacy is at the core of my belief system and at the absolute top of my priority list.

And in case you're wondering, then yes, I could make the code available for you to review. But unless you have the checksums to validate that the source code at GitHub is the exact version I've submitted to Apple for review, it's all security theatre. And after what happened to the Apollo dev, I'm extra wary.

Just gotta trust Apple app review to do their jobs. If you're a cyber security researcher and want a license to make sure the app isn't up to anything funky, hit me up at sid at ssiddharth dot com (yes, two "S" in the domain) or through my Reddit profile.

    Giveaway

As giving back to the community, a total of 15 licenses are up for grabs. Just leave a comment with what sites need to be ban hammered. I'll randomly pick eight winners at around 9AM EST Monday, the 27th.

The other seven, because I'm an animal lover, I'm giving away to people posting photos of their pet companions, in addition to sites that nag you. Dogs, cats, mice, birds, plants, snakes, I don't really care. If you don't have one, post a photo of your computer mouse. (I know, stretching it but 🤷🏻‍♂️)

Cat tax: Here is my brood, the reason I was able to get through the 2020 and 2021 with some semblance of my sanity intact.

    👋🏼

Thanks for reading this wall of text and I do hope you'll give Search Ban a shot. I know a lot of you have gotten equally annoyed as me with the quality of search results lately.

I made a guitar app for learning scales and chords with SwiftUI!

    Posted: 26 Dec 2021 08:36 AM PST

    Hi /r/Apple!

I've been a hobbyist guitar player for many years, but I never really took the time to learn a lot of the basic music theory behind chords/scales etc until this year. Learning more about this has been very interesting and helped me improve both my playing and compositions of various songs.

Throughout the learning experience I explored many different apps to use, but never really found one that worked the way I wanted. Most apps were either clunky to use or looked quite dated, and I really value good design (which is one of the main reasons I use apple products in the first place). I figured I'd make my own app, and I just got it approved earlier this week! It was a very fun development experience, as it also forced me to learn the necessary music theory.

The app is called Fretboards and supports most chords as well as the most important scales for both guitar/bass guitar and ukulele. The app is intended as a tool to really get familiar with the fretboard of your instrument. I used SwiftUI for everything, its really an amazing library for quickly creating good looking UI. The design is inspired by the newest wave of apple design, but is perhaps a bit more playful. I also spent a lot of time to make the gestures and interactions fluid and intuitive, which I think people will appreciate! I hope other guitar lovers here will find the app useful, and would love some feedback on the design and functionality of the app.

Fretboards is currently free and has no ads or in app purchases, so go wild! I might make the app a one time purchase in the future, but I haven't really decided anything yet.

Here's the link to the appstore page: https://apps.apple.com/no/app/fretboards/id1601293040

Thanks for reading, and merry xmas everyone!

I made a recurring task list tracker app called Recurrence [Giveaway Included]

    Posted: 26 Dec 2021 04:34 AM PST

    Download link: https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-store/id1494977084?mt=8

    Hi everyone!

I'm Stephen, the maker of Recurrence for iOS & macOS. I made Recurrence to scratch a personal itch I've had for several years. Traditional to-do apps typically focus on the current and the future, but I've always wanted to be able to look back historically. For many tasks it's helpful to see when they were last done & be able to record notes alongside that history. Recurrence makes this possible! It's great for tracking automotive maintenance, bills, pet tasks, chores, and so much more.

I've just released version 3.3.0 with support for Siri Shortcuts. I'd love for the app to help others get organized as we head in 2022!

Recurrence is a free download with ad support and a five-task limit. You can remove ads and unlock unlimited tasks with Recurrence Premium — available as a monthly or annual subscription. A lifetime unlock is also available as a single purchase as well.

For the giveaway, leave a comment with something you'll start tracking with Recurrence. I'll select 5 users to receive a free-time lifetime unlock of Recurrence Premium.

Please don't hesitate to comment with questions or feedback!

UPDATE: Thanks to everyone who participated! Winners have been chosen: https://www.redditraffler.com/raffles/row3w9

Petition to add playlist folders to iOS music app

    Posted: 26 Dec 2021 10:35 AM PST

Am I the only one who is desperate for playlist folders? Desktop iTunes has them, please add that functionality to iOS.

IMO the music app needs a massive overhaul in general. The library is clunky compared to older versions from the iPod era. For example, If I click on an artist, I should be able to select an option that lets me see all the songs I have by that artist, rather than always having the songs separated by album. You used to be able to do this and I have no clue why they would get rid of it :(

I made ReelTime, a simple yet powerful movie and TV show tracker for iOS. I’d love to hear what Reddit thinks!

    Posted: 26 Dec 2021 08:17 AM PST

    Hi Reddit!

I'm the developer of ReelTime. I made this app over the course of around two years. I've already released two feature updates and am starting work on another big release. I'm look for feedback, and I'm also completely open to any feature requests!

    Why choose ReelTime?

    Free Trakt Sync.

Sync your movies and TV shows. This includes watchlist, watched history, and ratings.

    No Account Required.

Local watchlist and watched history. Migrate to Trakt at any time.

    Release Dates & Air Dates.

Get notified on release and air dates. See all of your upcoming releases in one place. Customize the movie release dates that you want to know about (premiere, theatrical, digital, physical).

    Library Monitoring.

Know when anything in your library changes. Automatically monitor titles, posters, statuses, and more!

These are only a few features that ReelTime has to offer, and I've got much more planned. The app is completely free, so why not download it and give it a try? Like it or hate it, I'd love to hear what you think!

I made an offline-first personal Kanban app called Brisqi

    Posted: 25 Dec 2021 11:00 PM PST

    Hi reddit,

I'm so excited to share my first mac app with you all - an offline-first personal Kanban/task management app called Brisqi.

I always wanted a productivity app which could run completely offline, which focuses on privacy and had a beautiful design. I've been working on this app since June last year. Since then I've gotten tons of feedback and improved the app a lot.

In case you're wondering - I named the app Brisqi because I wanted it to give the app a feeling of quickness and seamless combined together and Brisqi sounded just that :). If you're interested in how I built it or what technologies I used - you can read the blog post here.

You can try it out for free or for one-time purchase for offline-use you can get updates until the end of life of the product. Here's the website link - https://brisqi.com

I hope you all like it and it useful. Looking forward to any feedback :)

To Mods: I hope you approve this post, I genuinely believe many people will find this app useful and a privacy focused alternative to existing ones out there.

Be aware that Apple activation servers may be a bit overloaded today
