Just bought 2019 Macbook Pro - Catalina vs Big Sur? Posted: 30 Nov 2021 02:32 PM PST I upgraded my 2014 Macbook Pro running Mojave OSX to a 16" 2019 Macbook Pro. Would Catalina or Big Sur be better on this computer? I mainly use it for Adobe XD, Photoshop, Lightroom and browsing. My main wants are: Good speed, security, function (lack of glitches, bugs, etc.) What do you guys think? Catalina or Big Sur? [link] [comments]

Installing Microsoft Office via offline installer on top of App Store install? Posted: 30 Nov 2021 07:11 PM PST When my sister got her new MacBook Pro, I performed a fresh install of macOS Monterey and installed her regular suite of software including Microsoft Office and OneDrive. I used the App Store to download and install them. We have a Family 365 subscription, so when she opened up Word for the first time, she logged in with her credentials, activated Office, and the whole suite worked fine. She's a bit new to macOS however, and this morning when she couldn't find Word in her dock, she thought to install it herself! She proceeded to the Office website, logged in, downloaded, and installed a full copy. The first time she launched Word, she was prompted for her user password to access Keychain, accessing her Office credentials, and logging her in. Everything seems to work fine, except that the apps (Word, Excel, OneDrive, etc.) seem "uninstalled" to the App Store. It shows that I own the apps, but has the "download" icon next to it instead of saying "Open." What are the implications for updates to the apps now? I know previous version of Office had some "Microsoft Updater" but I don't see it here. Any downsides to just "re-installing" from the App Store? Should I uninstall the existing copy first? Why is there no check to make sure this doesn't happen? [link] [comments]

Management profiles came back after full wipe? Logic board replaced by apple before too. Posted: 30 Nov 2021 05:49 PM PST I bought my MacBook 2 years ago off swappa, and used it fine, upgrading and going along. Im wiping it to get rid of it, but when I erased the ssd, and reinstalled MacOS, it rebooted and I created a throw away Admin account, when I logged in all of a sudden it loaded up a couple ebay seller management profiles and installed chrome and zoom. Did I delete the Ssd improperly or is it some call home function? There was no password, it was just the standard setup profile so I just deleted them, but I was wondering how it survived the format. It also had its logic board replaced by apple earlier this year, after I had bought AppleCare+ for it the previous year. It did not do this when I had gotten it back from Apple, but I set up my own user account, not Admin [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Nov 2021 01:20 PM PST Ok, I am not really sure where else to post this because I am struggling to find answers online. I'm currently using Netbeans for Java coding, and I keep encountering some pesky errors whenever I try to run a JavaFX program. I get some SIGBUS error code, and it proceeds to tell me I don't have room in my /tmp file. I went to it and it's completely empty. Is there a way I can make more room in my /private/tmp or is that impossible? [link] [comments]
Trying to factory reset MacBook, but 'Macintosh HD - Data' still takes up 80% of storage Posted: 30 Nov 2021 11:05 AM PST Hello I am trying to completely reset a MacBook Pro 13" 2017 running Big Sur. I've gotten to the point where I've gone to disk utility via reboot and erased 'Macintosh HD'. However there is a separate disk called 'Macintosh HD - Data' and it's taking op 198 GB of the total 250GB! Is this normal? I can't really find on the internet if I should erase it, delete it properly and why this is happening. Here are some screenshots (they're in Dutch, so 'Gegevens' is 'Data'): https://imgur.com/a/Rdff3cb) Could someone help me please on how to best possibly format the Macbook and safely reinstall Big Sur while having as much storage as I should have when buying it new? Thanks. [link] [comments]

Safari on macOS 12 doesn't sync tab groups properly Posted: 30 Nov 2021 07:56 AM PST I don't know if this is just me or if other people are facing this issue as well. Safari on macOS seems to prioritize iCloud tab group data over local changes. Meaning if you open a bunch of tabs inside a tab group, instead of syncing that data to iCloud, Safari will sometimes try to sync data with iCloud. As a result, I experience some weird glitches like a newly opened tab closing immediately and automatically, a recently closed tab automatically reopening itself, and/or websites reloading a couple of times before they start to respond. This mostly happens when my internet starts lag (my network speed keeps swinging up and down). Tab Groups syncing works perfectly on my iPhone and iPad despite being on the same network. It's hard to recreate this because it's so random but try turning off your internet connection, then open a bunch of tabs inside a tab group, then reconnect to your network. Then close all the tabs you just created. It should just reopen itself automatically. Device: M1 MacBook Air, running macOS 12.0. I did install the public beta for macOS 12 but I unenrolled after the official release and also had done a complete disk wipe and reinstalled macOS. [link] [comments]
Storing files on iCloud Drive vs syncing Desktop and Documents Posted: 30 Nov 2021 07:38 AM PST Just wanted to know if there are any inherent differences of how macOS treats or syncs files that are saved directly to the iCloud Drive versus files in the Desktop and Documents folders when the option to save those to iCloud is enabled. Is Little Snitch still recommended? Posted: 30 Nov 2021 04:35 AM PST I have dabbled with it a couple of years ago, but never really took the time to set it up properly. Haven't look at it since then, but am now quite interested in a tool like that. Is Little Snitch still a general recommendation, or are there better alternatives, or are these tools not even necessary anymore? Mac mini wakes up from sleep again, and again, and again Posted: 30 Nov 2021 09:56 AM PST Hi, Fairly new to MacOS here. I have an M1 Mac Mini that I bought a couple of weeks ago. Initially, sleep seemed to work well, but the last few days, the machine wakes up from sleep over and over and over. I bring it to sleep and maybe just 10 or 15 seconds later, it wakes up. I have tried unplugging all USB devices and closing all programs, and it still wakes up! It drives me nuts :( Is there a way to see what woke it up? Some log file that show what app or device generated the event? [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Nov 2021 07:44 AM PST I'm trying to sync music to my iPhone and it's getting stuck on "determining tracks to sync". Some times it takes two hours for that process and will sync, other times it says "failed to sync". I've updated everything and am tired of that being the only fix to find. I've tried running the kill usb-c line in terminal, with no luck.. I've restarting everything, used different cables, and different USB ports still no luck. I'm running a Mac Pro 2015 with Monterey 12.0.1 and trying to add music to an iPhone 12 with iOS with 15.1.1. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! [link] [comments]
Any benefit by using both built in firewall and Little snitch Posted: 30 Nov 2021 01:38 PM PST Hello wondering if there is any additional benefit by using built in firewall and little snitch. Built in firewall has 'stealth mode' feature to hide MAC from outside and wondering if it works great with little snitch. Or could cause performance issue by using both ? Thanks [link] [comments] |
