Posted: 06 Nov 2021 04:53 PM PDT Here's my situation: I'm a lifelong Windows user. I earn my living on a Windows PC using Office apps. I like Windows - it doesn't get in my way and I know how it works. For me, it's almost perfect. So only a fool messes with something that works, right? The trouble is, I'm being lured in by MacOS. I've seen so many claims of "once you go mac you don't go back", and "I used Windows for ten years and then I used MacOS for one day and I was hooked", but these are rarely backed up by reasons of why. I have some limited experience with MacOS and I'm not afraid of learning new keyboard shortcuts and whatever else I'd need to make the switch. In truth, it's the hardware that interests me. I had an M1 Air for a couple of weeks and it was amazing as an object to hold and use. I just didn't get hooked on MacOS. My love of tech demands I buy a MacBook Pro that I can afford but don't really need. So, MacOS stalwarts of Reddit - what does MacOS bring to your lives that Windows does not? Windows for me is transparent - it's just there as a platform for my work and I rarely notice it's there. Why does MacOS command such loyalty? Surely it's just a means to get things done, isn't it? OS Monterey makes my MacBook heat up and then freeze. Posted: 06 Nov 2021 10:49 PM PDT I have a 2020 MacBook Pro(Intel). Since I have updated my OS to Monterey, I've been having issues. When I stream a movie on Netflix, it runs hot and loud. It didn't do this before And then it gets to a point where it just freezes and restarts on its own. I never had this problem with previous OS. Is anyone else dealing with this? And are there any solutions to this problem? [link] [comments]

Monterey - Static Hiss When Waking From Sleep Posted: 06 Nov 2021 06:55 PM PDT I haven't seen this posted anywhere. Occasionally when I open my MacBook Pro lid and unlock, I get a loud static hiss and half of a notification sound, no notification banner. I first noticed this on my MacBook Pro 2021 (M1 Pro), but it's also just happened on my MacBook Pro 2020 (Intel). So I'm thinking it's a bug in Monterey since I hadn't heard this on the 2020 Intel model before updating it to Monterey. I'm running version 12.0.1 (21A559). Has anyone else experienced this? It's quite jarring and hoping it will be fixed in the next update. [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Nov 2021 11:32 PM PDT I am in need of linux environment but currently i cannot afford another laptop. So is it possible to make complete switch to ubuntu on this model , will i have incompatibilities between OS and Hardware? I really don't need any macos specific service as i mainly work in matlab /octave and SPICE simulation. I need to switch to linux for ROS/ MoveIT plus a little bit more space with lighter OS? Weird reboot just before Catalina update Nov 2 Posted: 06 Nov 2021 11:10 PM PDT Has anybody seen something like this before? I was writing a doc in LibreOffice on the 1st or 2nd on my 2013 iMac when it just plain shutdown and restarted. First thing to show up on a black screen was do I want to run an update on Catalina, which was up to date at that point. I clicked yes, of course, and a screen came up like the one you get when your going to reinstall from the website (r). Did it. Done. Ok restart. Weird. Like I said 2013 iMac, i7, 32GB RAM, 2TB Samsung 870(?) SSD only half full and 3mo old. I have an Icy Doc a number of years old and 3 of 4 drives would not mount (I've put this in another thread). B-tree error that Disk Util would not fix. (Don't have my notes right here but was a 'diskentry' error I believe it was). Anyways, thats all fixed. But I really gotta wonder what the F happened. Oh...and I had gotten a Lightroom and Photoshop update a few days before that, but no issues out there re that. Sorry if I am slow to respond back here in the next few days. Thanks. Posted: 07 Nov 2021 01:43 AM PDT I am concerned, but I'm not sure this is actually true, macOS is lacking behind in Unix tools. What I mean by that is, macOS has some FreeBSD and other BSD utilities, such as netstat, etc. Because problems with GPL3 licensing, mac switched from Bash to ZSH. Are mac CLI tools like netstat and others updated regularly? Or ar they ancient version from an old FreeBSD release? I say this also because Linux swtiched to iproute2 packet, introducing tools like the ss command, while mac does not have them [link] [comments]

Mac OS still lowers system volume when you're in a Facetime call. Any fix? Posted: 06 Nov 2021 03:42 PM PDT Can't find a solution online that works so far. [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Nov 2021 08:38 PM PDT So I have a macbook pro 2020 I bought recently and while I can use just about everything I have a dilemma. I use an mp3 player for all my music. (streaming services require an internet connection which I don't like, and I like a bunch of artists not on available on streaming platforms). Normally this would be a no brainer, plug mp3 into computer, move mp3 files from downloads over to mp3. But I know from experience that macos isn't that easy. So I before I attempt to find a usb c to usb mini a cord, is this possible with MacOs? Is there some third party software? Or am I simply wasting my time? [link] [comments]

Is there a way to maximize a Window (Safari etc.) while FaceTime / WhatsApp Video is still on top? Posted: 06 Nov 2021 06:06 PM PDT Unfortunately when I'm watching a Movie and I'm in a Video Call I can't seem to maximize the Video without the Video Call still being on top. Is there any solution to that? [link] [comments]
Windows Admin Struggling With Big Sur Networking Posted: 06 Nov 2021 12:05 PM PDT I'm a network admin who's entire experience is within Windows Active Directory in small-business environments (a few years experience but not gonna call myself an expert just yet). I recently got a position at a company that's all on Windows 2019 servers but didn't have in-house on-site IT until me (and didn't document anything). However I have a single user running a Macbook running Big Sur and having long-term networking problems, but I have zero OSX experience and nobody in-house I an ask. I've been taking a crash course in OSX via University Of Youtube but I am stuck on this thing, and I'm not looking forward to this thing waiting for me Monday morning. The problem is with network sharing. She can log in to the network just fine via her AD account whether locally or over VPN, use printers, Office apps, videoconference, even access network files to read. However when she tries to write to network storage, whether moving a new file to a directory or saving an update to an existing file, the connection hangs and then times out with error message 100060. The shares are mapped via smb with syntax smb://<servername>/<userfolder>. I've tried clearing and redoing her keychain and remapping the shares. Using her account logged in to a Windows machine, she can read and write to those same directories just fine, so its not a question of permissions. Her computer is the only Mac in the building, so I can't check if the problem is such for all Macs or only hers. From what I've been told she's never been able to network properly, and for years her solution to moving things on to the network was to use an external hard drive and move to Windows computer to upload, so its not a new problem. As I said, zero OSX experience so I really don't know what else to hit. From my readings I've read that Big Sur apparently has (had?) issues with networking and found more than one discussion recommending a rollback to Catalina, although most of those discussions are a year-ish old and maybe that problem has been fixed. And of course with zero OSX familiarity I wouldn't know where to begin running such a rollback, or if you even could since its been there for over a year. So anyone with experience with OSX networking in an AD environment that ran in to something like this, I'd love to know how you resolved it. [link] [comments]
