    Hi r/MacOS,

    I've been a long-time Mac user, I had one of the first 20" G5 iMac's in the UK and never looked back. (I can add that story later in the thread if this goes anywhere)

    What I'm after is some recommendations for learning MacOS and going a little "deeper" I have only ever really just used the apps but I know there is terminal etc. I did start messing about with shortcuts and that was fun. Having a solid anchor in Apple's ecosystem, I'd like to learn more from a reliable place.

    I have listed the devices and a few use cases below:

    M1 Pro MBP Base Model

    M1 Mini Base Model

    27" LG 4K Monitor

    MXKeys for Mac

    Magic TrackPad

    12.9" iPadPro 2018

    iPhone 11 Pro Max

    Various Apple TV's around the house

    Airpods Pro

    Apple Watch (S4 or 5)

    Lenovo Thinkpad - Coal Power edition (work issued)

    I have the Mini connected with the screen (USB-C) but I'm seriously considering selling the Mini and just buying a hub for the MBP. The Lenovo is also connected to the screen (HDMI)

    Work:

    I use each of the three computers for work, I mainly use the Mini for work, lot's of MS stuff like Teams and Sharepoint (all O365 desktop apps) I am a product manager for Sharepoint based communities of practice platform that runs perfectly on the Mac's... but the new PreProduction Environment only works on my Lenovo.

    Play:

    I normally only use the MBP for pleasure since it arrived a month ago. I enjoy messing about with iMovie and Photos. Obviously love trawling through Reddit and web surfing... watching tv and movies is ok too.

    What I don't like:

    Paying CleanMyMac because I don't know enough about macOS and how to keep it running smoothly. I also get the feeling that I am not using these great machines to their full potential, but, I wouldn't get under the bonnet of my car and start trying to make it better all by myself.

    Oh man, I feel like this has turned into a TL;DR but I gt it all out... where would you point me so I can learn more?

    Is there a way to disable this URL bar?

    Need help! I was given an old Mac desktop that has macOS X I believe. However the caveat is that he forgot his password on it. I’ve tried to find the recovery drive but I don’t believe this Mac has one. Does anyone know how to help me factory reset it or possibly help me change the password??

    uh im not sure how to phrase this but ive been trying to update my macbook for days to the new macOS. i installed it the first time and it restarted but each time when it restarts my macOS is still not MacOS Monterey??? was wondering if anyone else had this problem, and what i should to to fix it.

    Pink screen diagnostic report. What does it mean? Macbook M1 user

    Hello everyone. Based on my previous post, I checked the Console application and managed to find a diagnostic report during the time that my Macbook showed a pink screen and restarted. Does anyone know what this report means? TIA

    So as someone who had always dual booted windows and linux , i bought M1 air 2 days ago and i have so much to say.

    To be honest i haven't touched any "technology" since 2 years except my android phone and my work dell xps 13. before that i was always dual booting , installing new linux distro's every 2nd week and installing new custom rom on my android. I still like android and probably won't be switching to IOS even for my next purchase as i really like android and IOS feel way too much closed for my comfort.

    But in term larger devices its a totally different story. I was tired of using larger devices years ago. I started lagging behind. I wanted to apply for a new job but couldn't since last two years because i couldn't make a new resume. It may feel like i'm over exaggerating but honest too god , i couldn't stand interacting with computers outside my work. And also for work only things i interacted in last two years was my code editors , chrome , application we were building and command prompt that too mostly to run git commands and i never did anything except that even for updating git or node js i raised it to IT team and they did everything using remote access.

    And now after 2 days buying m1 air for personal use i would start with "negatives". and these are knit picks because i find everything else amazing , so simple and atleast doesn't feel like chore.

    - Firstly what the hell apple i thought you cared about User experience then why does on first boot setup on one screen you have press enter to continue and there is a button at the bottom but in next screen enter doesn't work and you are trying to click on button but nothing works then a quick google search revels apparently apple have disabled tap to click in touchpad by default and you have to press touchpad to register click .

    And then i connected to my wifi and it got connected in next screen where you have to create new apple id , there nothing was responding , clicking on buttons was doing nothing , i restarted my macbook twice and same thing was happening but then i realised probably automatic assigned IP was colliding , not a apple issue but i have extended my wifi range using old router and lan cable , this sort of stuff happens , i assign manual IP to fix this. But you know what apple other gives indication that goes in line of "connected but no internet access" but no problem you could also have given some feedback on button clicks.

    Moving on why on this earth your delete key actually deletes stuff. So far thats only negatives i have.

    Also i downloaded that 12 gb monetary thrice and it failed every time. because apparently there was still and update remaining which you can only know if you click and see more button and you update that first. If thats the case why would you show update that i can't still do in main windows in large letters with image and a download button.

    But everything else about mac os is pretty brilliant , and also m1 air hardware is also amazing but user experience of OS X is how every personal computing OS should be designed.

    Using my device doesn't feel like chore everything is so simple and just works. And finally i'm making my new resume too.

    I've been experiencing Kernel Panic Restarts on my 15 inch Base MacBook Pro 2018 ever since i updated to MacOS Monterey. This happens 1-2 times a day. I've ran Apple Diagnostics and it says there is no issues with my Mac, and i've never had such problems before.

    I dug around the Crash Reports and i found this for the Termination Reason

    Namespace WATCHDOG, Code 1 monitoring timed out for service

    (1 monitored services unresponsive): checkin with service: WindowServer returned not alive with context:

    unresponsive work processor(s): WindowServer main thread

    40 seconds since last successful checkin, 1021 total successsful checkins since wake (0 induced crashes)

    Is there any solution to this problem or do I have to wait until another update in hopes that Apple fixes smn in their OS by themselves? I've had crashes where I've lost a lot of unsaved work for my uni, so it would be great if Reddit could help me what is happening. Thank you in advance!

    What is the technical explanation for why Archive Utility can break certain apps, while other unarchivers won't?

    I just experienced this issue described in this answer.

    I had downloaded a zip file containing a macOS app, and first unzipped it with Archive Utility, when trying to open the app, I got the error that it "could not be opened" (with no further clarification) just like in the Q&A linked to above.

    However, when I used Keka (third party archive software) to unzip, the app worked just fine.

    What is the technical explanation for this? Aren't zips and other archives supposed to come out literally the same, byte for byte? How can one unarchiver break the app, but not the other?

    Safari doesn't let me change it's icon

    I have been using this MBA 2020 for a month now. I randomly thought hey VS code icon looked kinda cool earlier is there a way to go back to it, long story short I manage to do it. But for safari, this method does not work, I have changed the icons for Anki, WhatsApp, VS code and Spotify, but whenever it comes to Safari, I drag my icon file and it's just that. There's no change. Anyone has any idea why?

    Weird Safari Bug

    Hey guys, so across my usual browsing I came across this bug in Safari that (I guess) causes images to appear outside of their "containers". I know this might be a problem on a site-to-site basis (or just on my machine), but it's really weird and it's happening more and more. I am a web developer so this is quite jarring as I have never seen this before. Images are something that's pretty easy to implement on websites in any way imaginable, so yeah, I guess I just wanna know if you guys experienced it as well.

    Retrieving iMessage history

    Im trying to see if it would be possible to retrieve past messages I sent from my iMessage account on my laptop. I had to restore it a few months back, which ended up resetting everything. I lost a few pictures and information I had exchanged via text and I was wondering if there was any way to retrieve it?

    Remove duplicate files/folders

    Is there a recommended open source program that automates this process. Over the years I have used cloud backups with different services. I have consolidated down to only using Mac with iCloud as back up. However my system and iCloud are now housing these all of these different backups from windows/google. I just want to go through and delete all the duplicated files, folders, images, and videos.
