    Seeking: a different type of audio production tool, more like a corkboard or storyboard

    I create interview shows for community radio, often interviewing 2-10 people on a subject (individually, in the field) then splicing the captured audio together to interweave their voices. To get an overview of the material I use Wreally's great online transcription service, then mark up the transcripts with coloured highlighting etc as I see subjects and themes emerge.

    Then comes the hard part, where I clip the bits of audio that all refer to one theme and shuffle them into a nice narrative flow about that theme. And here's where I feel a sore need for a tool that I don't have and may not even exist...

    What I would really like is something like a 2D storyboard/corkboard where I can move "index cards" around freely as I organise the flow of the text, but also be able to attach mp3 clips to each of those index cards and generate a rough master track when they are in the order I prefer.

    So basically something like Scrivener's "cards" mode, but with a bigger working area and mp3s attached to the postits/cards. And with a Generate button that instead of generating formatted document, generates a larger mp3 stitched together from all the clips in their final order.

    As it is now, I use Audacity for editing the audio and it's kind of a pain because Audacity cannot attach text labels to audio clips, only to times on the master timeline. So it pretty soon becomes a matter of short-term memory and if I get interrupted or distracted, I completely lose the plot (as it were).

    If anyone knows of a free-form 2D workspace for organising mp3 clips, with the ability to attach text labels and comments to them, I would gladly pay even a hefty license fee for it.

    So how this would work in practise: there's a large window (maybe full screen) with a bunch of virtual index cards or postit notes floating on a neutral background, each one "attached" to an mp3 clip. I imagine the clipping is built into this tool, so I tell it "mp3 file XXX, from 15:67 to 18:13" and it goes and fetches that clip and attaches it to the index card on which I have typed "John Smith recollects his childhood in Muskokie" or whatever. And a Play button on each card so I can listen to it and verify that it's what I think it is! Then I shuffle these cards around into a narrative order. When I'm done, I hit Generate and a new mp3 file is created that consists of all the clips in the order I shuffled them into.

    So, just like storyboarding a movie or TV show or play or even sketching a comic book, but with audio.

    Then of course I would go into Audacity and post-process for levels, noise reduction, C/L and so on, eliminate dead air and ums and ahs, and all the rest of the tedious grooming of broadcast audio.

    Just describing this imaginary tool increases my vast frustration with the workflow I have to struggle with it at present... grrr. Hoping it really exists somewhere. Even for Windows. Whatever. If anyone knows of such a tool pleeeeze can you send URL?

    MacOS Monterey Airdrop not working

    Hi all, I just updated my 15inch 2019 Macbook Pro and somehow the airdrop function is not working anymore. I have tried to restart the Bluetooth and the SMC but it still didn't work. Is anyone having the same problem or knowing how to fix it?

    P/s: the airdrop function is still working between my iPad and iPhone so it's definitely because of the new software update. Also, I could still send photos via airdrop to my mac but not the other way around.

    Equation bookmark on Pages

    I would like to add a equation was bookmark, since I have to use it a lot and I don't want to ad it every time. I added this equation by the equation section in the menu above and I use Pages 8.1. I would be very grateful to everyone who will manage to help me facing this problem.

    Apple Mail: "Move to Junk"

    What does "Move to Junk" actually do?

    Does it simply move the selected email(s) to the junk folder? Or will it junk all future emails from the sender of the message(s)?

    Also how would this differ from setting rules?

    Where is the Tips app on Monterey?

    I've expected a new Apple app to show up in my app directory. I thought they'd add the same Tips app as they did with iPhones. But they didn't. Am I doing something wrong or are the tips supposed to work differently?

    How to replicate some AHK shortcuts in macOS

    I recently, for the very first time, got myself a macbook after ages of using windows, and am loving it (even though I am still going through the learning curve).

    I had a bunch of AHK scripts that I used to run in windows, and would like to use them in macOS too if possible.

    Some of them are:

    • F3 = typing reddit.com/r/
    • F3+A = typing /top/?sort=top&t=all
    • Caps Lock = Switch b/w 2 apps (replicate Cmd + Tab)
    • Win + G = Google the selected text

    I was looking for programs that may help me with these and found solutions none of which can do all of those at once:

    • Keyboard Maestro - Cannot use any other modifier keys other than the default ones
    • Same with Hammerspoon
    • Karabiner apparently broke in Big Sur/+

    So, is there any way of replicating the above functions? Any other apps/ways... Especially the ability to use any key as a modifier key (an elegant and easy to do/easy documentation would be amazing).

    PS - One thing that surprises me is the lack of easy documentation with examples. I mean some do give examples of the most common stuff but the rest are dumped in a huge list of APIs. (unlike AHK with a lot of example in their docs with a huge community)

    I'm trying to change the icon of an app (namely the Brave Browser) and every few days it changes back to the original icon... I have tried two things:

    • opening the app info and pasting the new image file (copied from finder and from preview)
    • changing the app.icns file inside the app package >content>resources

    As I write these lines I realize maybe this has to do with upgrades. Is it possible?

    I have a similar problem with Calibre: the icon changes to the original when the app is open, then it comes back to the one I chose. That is less of a problem and I don't use it as often as the browser.

    I understand this might be a minor issue for most users, and that it is merely aesthetic. It is important for me though. Thank you.

    MacBook won't sync photos to iPhone [help]

    Initially my Macbook's Finder was working and was syncing my photos, but one day I decided to wipe my photos on my iPhone by unsyncing the photos through Finder. It worked, and a few weeks later, I decided to sync my photos back.

    Ever since, I haven't been able to sync my photos to my iPhone again. I made sure that it's the correct Photos Library and everything, and uncheck and checked it multiple times and attempted to sync it to no success. I've updated my iPhone and MacBook to the latest iOS and it still doesn't work. I don't know what is causing this because I searched online and couldn't find a solution. Is there a fix for this?

    Also, some info that may be useful or not. I'm using a 12 Pro Max, and I use the Photos app on the MacBook to transfer my photos. I am aware that there are other apps I can use, but I prefer this way because of how convenient it is.

    When downgrading, do i need to separate drives or can i partition?

    I am trying to downgrade from macOS 12.0.1 back to Big Sur 11.6. When downloading the Big Sur Installer, do I need a separate drive, or can I install it on a partition of the drive I would use for time machine?

    cmd+x on Finder

    Hi everybody (specially devs),

    since TotalFinder is not supported by M1, I'm searching for an alternative that let me cut and paste items with cmd+x.

    I perfectly know there is cmd+option+v for moving an item but I'm too used to do cmd+x in every program that my mind refuses to do this.

    I tried pathfinder but it doesn't works great: if I cut an item it disappears from its original folder and if I forgot to paste this item and I copy another file, I lost forever the item I cut.

    Is there a way to create a kind of a script that "simply" copy a file when I press cmd+x and then paste+delete the file when I press cmd+v?

    I imagine something like:

    if cmd-x + cmd-v do cmd-v + delete the original

    ...or maybe:

    if cmd-x + cmd-v do cmd+option+v

    Hi guys, I was wondering how Monterey is on older systems as I've always patched my way up new os' for eg - I have both my 2012 mac mini and macbook pro running big sur. (they are both upgraded)

    I have 1tb SSD in both and 16gbs of RAM. I've found a Monterey patch already and before I commit I'd like to know how its going.

    How to clean up my Mac?

    I was wondering what's the best way to find old data and old files from deleted programs on my Mac? I have the feeling that there are a lot of files that filled up my storage. I'm using an M1 Mac on Monterey.

    [Power Mac G5] Powered this Power Mac g5 up and it turns on but my monitor stays black. The lights flash only 2 times every few seconds. Can anyone tell me the problem or send an article on how to fix this? Thanks.

    macOS Monterey: Mac wakes up every time I change focus setting on iPhone

    After I installed macOS Monterey, every time I change my focus setting on my iPhone (like enabling or disabling DnD), my iMac 5K 2017 wakes up from sleep. The display isn't turning on, but I'm hearing the hard drives start spinning and it takes a lot of time for it to sleep again.

    The thing is, I have disabled the share between devices setting on iMac for focus settings, because I want it to be independent from my iPhone, so there ins't any reason for my iMac to wake up every time I change the focus setting on my iPhone, because the focus setting on the iMac don't have to change at all.

    Is there a way to prevent this from happening?

    Anyone else having massive memory issues on the new macbooks?

    To start this off,i'll say rn that im new to MacOS,but the appeal of the new macbook pros made me wanna jump ship and ive really been enjoying myself except for one major issue.. I've been getting freezes and crashes since i've brought the mac and looking at activity monitor tells me that the "WindowServer" process is constantly building up to the point where the system can't handle it and i get restarts..

    I haven't done anything too intense at all using it,just browsing the internet,using discord and checking emails. Even as i type this windowserver is using 14 gigs,but ive seen it go as high as 56.. my system only has 32 gigs.

    Ive done everything I can and even resorted to reinstalling the OS 4 times now (i didn't know what the problem even was for 2 of those resets..) but no matter what,it keeps coming back. I've talked to customer support and ive been told i qualify for a replacement,but id have to be without anything for over a month while they ship a new one. I really don't even want to return this machine,but idk if im just having a software issue that can/will be patched soon,or if there's something deeper going on and i'll need to replace/return this one..

    Any advice/news on this subject would be greatly appreciated!

    Migration Assistant... assistance...

    Sorry - I tried googling and can't find a clear answer.

    I've been rocking the same MacBook for ~7 years and finally have a replacement on the way. I have two issues: my current laptop has a ton of processes open in Activity Monitor, despite not having any programs on "Login Items", and I have a ton of old folders (uninstalled programs, old versions of lightroom/photoshop, etc).

    My question is: if I use Migration Assistant and exclude Applications (transfer User Account, Other Files & Folders, and System & Network), will those old processes still show up? I assume by not transferring "Applications", the Library folder will be fresh & new too, correct?

    Monterey Bug w/AirPlay and AppleTV?

    Is anyone else seeing a bug where Monterey cannot see an AppleTV? Trying to connect to a 3rd Generation AppleTV and it will show up if I summon the list of AirPlay devices on my iPhone 13, and then at that point I can also see it in Screen Mirroring in control center. But once the iPhone is not listing AirPlay devices, it disappears from the list on my M1 MacBook Pro. I can see other Apple TVs in the same network. I can also confirm I tried disconnecting and reconnecting the AppleTV from the network.
