The App Library is a mess

    Posted: 09 Nov 2021 07:19 PM PST

Can someone make this make sense to me? The way it organizes apps seems to be completely random.

Something like DC Universe ends up under Entertainment, but Marvel & ComiXology go in Information & Reading. On my phone all my sports apps have their own Sports folder, on my iPad they're mixed in with Entertainment. Reddit is News on my phone, but Info & Reading on my iPad. Twitter is Info, but Discord is social. They're both social on my phone.

I really hope they add the ability to reclassify sometime before ios16, it's driving me mad.

ProMotion on the new MacBooks is really bad

    Posted: 09 Nov 2021 05:09 PM PST

I have Windows 11 running in Parallels on here and I've started preferring it over the native MacOS because of how much smoother it is. In Windows everything is just locked at 120Hz and it looks fantastic. ProMotion in MacOS simply doesn't work as advertised and it's a really inconsistent experience with some of Apple's own applications (notably Safari) not even supporting it. I was really excited about 120Hz on the new MacBooks but an increased refresh rate that depends on application developers modifying their code to support it isn't something I wanted. Even in the OS itself, why are some animations 120Hz and some 60? It just looks bad. I would lock it at 120Hz and take the battery life hit if I could. Let me disable ProMotion like I can disable other battery life preserving features.

I think a better implementation would have been two refresh rates - 120 for anything moving, and 10 for static content. That way it never dips below 120 in a perceptible way but you still get a lot of the battery life advantages. This dynamic scaling thing that relies on applications supporting it just isn't really working.

I switch into Windows and use Edge to browse the internet now instead of using Safari in MacOS which is definitely not something I imagined myself doing when I bought this machine.

Apple Support told me to contact my local police for a package that was returned to them

    Posted: 09 Nov 2021 10:17 AM PST

    Hey guys,

I saw the post currently on the front page of /r/Apple about the replacement package that was lost by FedEx that Apple is refusing to assist with. I believe I have a situation that is even more bizarre. I preordered the new Apple Watch Series 7 Aluminum. It was picked up by UPS in China on October 11th. It said it was being "Held for pickup" however when I went to my local UPS they claimed they did not have the package. Eventually it showed "Returning to sender because receiver did not pick up package. It seemingly bounced around within UPS's network for weeks before finally being automatically returned to Apple on November 1st.

The entire tracking details are VERY long because it bounced to a new city almost everyday for 3 weeks, but here is 3 screenshots from it -

    Beginning - https://i.imgur.com/vmSnjJ6.jpg

    Middle - https://i.imgur.com/O5bDLBE.jpg

    End - https://i.imgur.com/mKPPwAc.jpg

During this entire period I was contacting Apple and working with a Senior Advisor to get this situation resolved since UPS claimed only the sender could modify the delivery. Well on October 29th (while UPS still had the package I received this email from Apple. I contacted my Senior Advisor again and he assured me that regardless of what the email said, once the package arrived back with Apple I would received a refund.

I waited 48 hours after Apple received it back and had the Senior Advisor reach out to me again on November 3rd. The Senior Advisor stated that Apple's advice was to follow up with my local law enforcement and that they would not be assisting any further. My immediate response was "So… you want me to go to my local police station and tell them I ordered an item from Apple, UPS picked it up, never delivered it, and then the package was successfully returned to the sender, Apple? If I tell them that and that I want to file a police report for it they will laugh at me as this makes no sense"

He then responds again with, "sorry but it says for me to tell you to follow up with your local law enforcement".

So Apple pretty much stole $480 from me. I want to file a chargeback, but I'm nervous to do so as I do not want my Apple ID to get banned as retaliation.

TL;DR - Ordered Apple Watch from Apple, UPS lost it, then returned it to Apple. Apple refused to issue a refund and wants me to file a police report against ??? despite no crime being commited.

    M1 Max 32GB vs. 64GB - My Experience

    Posted: 09 Nov 2021 04:29 AM PST

I know that 32GB vs. 64GB is a hot topic. Therefore, I wanted to share my experience, using an M1 Max 32GB.

As a test, I launched and ran the following software simultaneously.

    • UTM running Ubuntu Server (8GB Memory Allocated)
    • Docker (2GB Memory Allocated)
    • Godot Game Engine (3D Game)
    • GameMaker Studio 2 (GMS2) Game Engine (2D Game)
    • Apple Xcode IDE (Objective-C Project)
    • Visual Studio Code (Web Project)
    • Google Chrome (Four Tabs)
    • Affinity Photo (4K Photo)
    • Final Cut Pro
    • OBS

Regarding Godot and GMS2, not only did I have the development environments open, but also two games compiled and running at max settings.

The total memory consumed was 24GB, leaving 8GB available.

I appreciate the test is very workload-specific. However, I think it does demonstrate how much can be achieved with 32GB.

It is also a testament to the Apple process scheduler and memory management as the device was running on battery with no noticeable slow down (which is remarkable).

Battery issues on the M1 Pro Macbook 14"? How is your battery life?

    Posted: 09 Nov 2021 08:27 PM PST

I have the M1 Pro Macbook Pro 14" and am getting abysmal battery life with light usage. I have had this machine for 5 days now and it is not indexing. I am a newer Apple customer so I don't have a lot on my iCloud, etc. I have tried safe booting and reformatting it, ensuring that apps are closed, but even with that the battery has only been lasting 7 hours from web browsing. This evening, I watched Netflix for 1 hr on battery and it drained 25% with the brightness at 50-60%. This was right after reformatting and after indexing was done. The only app I installed was Google Chrome. I know that Chrome is a battery drainer but compared to others who manage to get 10-11 hours while doing video editing, this doesn't seem right... Plus after I reformatted the device, the screen started randonmly flickering which was new.

I have decided to return my M1 Pro since I feel like I've received a defective device, and then repurchase a new one (though sadly that means I won't receive it until end Dec). I was wondering if any other M1 Pro 14" owners are experiencing similar issues?
