Why is nobody talking about ProMotion being absolutely broken right now? Posted: 25 Nov 2021 09:21 AM PST Seriously, everybody praises their new MacBooks for having a great keyboard, MagSafe and so on. It's great, don't get me wrong; but using macOS Monterey feels terrible right now. It is just so flipping buggy / weird. Edit: I have created a short video that maybe better explains the issues I have with the animation for switching spaces right now (unlisted on a channel without videos, so it is not self-promotion): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Oi_zcs06X0 Here are just a few problems I have with it right now: - Safari more often than not stutters while scrolling or typing. This is especially the case, when setting a fixed framerate for the display (which I have to do as described below). For instance, I am currently typing this in Safari and scrolling this text field runs at 12Hz and after a second of scrolling goes up to 30Hz, despite me having set the screen to 60Hz. This is fixed every time when I open OBS to record it (because I guess then the display always uses 60Hz, but I won't drain my battery by having OBS running in the background all the time). -- Scrolling to the very top of a page plays a jelly bounce back animation which halts all interaction with the website whatsoever (this will be a running theme of this post). While this animation plays (which takes 1-2 seconds again) all input is captured into a buffer and then played back. So if I scroll to the very top and then instantly down - it is getting queued and will be processed once the animation plays. Wtf. Why? I will switch to Chrome for the time being (because Firefox can't handle the new ProMotion displays at all and will constantly stutter). - In general, many very crucial animations take way longer, when ProMotion is active. Most notably: The Desktop Space Animation. For instance: Switching from Visual Studio Code to the Terminal (which I have to do every ~20-60 seconds) does no longer take 0.5 seconds of animation, before I can start typing / scrolling or interacting with the window in any way. No.. it now takes 1.5 seconds. 1.5 SECONDS. This may seem small, but for me it's not. Imagine you have to wait 5% of the time using your laptop for stupid animations to finish. Every time I switch desktops there is this urge in me to slam the laptop into the ground. (Enabling "Reduce motion" does not fix this - it still takes a lot of time) -- Let's say I want to switch to Desktop 3 from Desktop 1, but have Desktop 4 open. If I press Ctrl+Right 3 instead of 2 times, I can't cancel the animation. I can spam Ctrl+Left as much as I want, Apple want's me to wait those 1.5 seconds and then go back. This might seem small, but it makes multitasking an absolute chore. Remind you, this only happens with ProMotion. When setting the display to a fixed 60Hz, it's fine and only takes 1 second. I can't cancel the animation, but I can live with a second of delay. But even then - the display is not running at a constant 60Hz for some reason and often it just stutters. - Mission Control places windows at random and not deterministically - Not macOS related, but why do I now have a stupid Spotlight, Dictation and DND key? Are you kidding me? My 12 year old brother knows Cmd+Spacebar and he uses Windows mainly. It is the quintessential keyboard shortcut for operating macOS. Why would I want a dedicated key for that? I can not control my keyboard backlight brightness, but oh thanks - I have a dedicated Spotlight key. And don't get me started on the arrow keys. There is just empty space for no reason. Left & Right keys broke on my M1 MacBook after 6 months (and I type lightly, but code a lot). I wonder why. -- Speaking of the software for the keyboard: "Use F1, F2 etc. keys as standard function keys" is broken. I have enabled it as by preference and once I do, said keys for Spotlight, Dictation and DND just lose their stupid function. Pressing Fn+F4 for instance just does nothing then. What is wrong with Apple? How can this abomination pass QA? Why strip away my keyboard brightness keys, while releasing software that just disables the keys entirely? Mind you - if there was an easy fix for this, hell yea. No problem. I can speed up the Mission Control Animation using Note: My M1 didn't have any of these issues btw. But that thing had a touch bar. I didn't notice Apples flawed keyboard until then, because I focused on the touch bar I guess. At least I could change keyboard brightness there. [link] [comments]
In need of a knowledgeable IT guy. Posted: 25 Nov 2021 09:41 PM PST I tried to update my Mac and it got stuck in the loading screen, I did a safe mode start but it wasn't giving me access to my main User. I need to restore my main User because I have very important Information there but unfortunately I do not have a backUp. I was able to access some of the files from the safe mode profile but I really need to restore my main User. I tried to restart with command control R but didn't work, it just keeps getting stuck in the loading screen. Any ideas on how to fix this? [link] [comments]

Posted: 25 Nov 2021 09:31 PM PST Hello! Wednesday I was having an issue with my M1 MBA so I did a complete restore on it. I was able to log back into my iCloud just fine on the device but I CANNOT get FaceTime or iMessage to connect it just comes up with an unexpected error error. I have tried logging out and back into iCloud. I have booted it up in safe mode, and I have been tried logging in as a different user. Still nothing. Every now and then I message will go through but it's super old messages that pop up and when I go to preferences it says my iCloud but it just spins and spins. Does anyone have any ideas? control Music volume with keyboard instead of system volume??? Posted: 25 Nov 2021 05:05 PM PST I have a MacBook Air M1 running macOS 12 Monterey and I'm just wondering if there is some possible way to make the volume keys on the keyboard adjust the volume in Music instead of the whole system's volume. You would think this would be basic but i cant seem to find anything about a way to do this. I primarily play Music to my HomePod while the rest of my app sounds stay on the built-in speakers and i don't want or need the levels of both to be the same. [link] [comments]

Is Macbook Air M1 (16/512) good for Web Development Posted: 25 Nov 2021 09:57 PM PST Hi, i use a Windows laptop and want to change it to a Macbook Air M1 (16/512). Have a few questions. Is 13 inch enought for web dev (front-end)? And is the Macbook good to use in back-end programming and various languages (C ++, python, Java, etc.), I am a student and so I am considering a Mac because of its compactness, a 15-inch Windows laptop is not very convenient and bad keeps the battery. You can also tell us about your experience of using Macbook Air on M1 [link] [comments]

A Single Click on a Hyperlink Opens up a blank window Posted: 25 Nov 2021 07:38 PM PST Hey ya'll. Bought my first Mac. Love it. Except for like two annoying things I'm sure I'm just doing wrong. Anytime I single click on a hyperlink while in Safari (whether I press firmly or tap the touchpad), it opens up a blank window. If I press with two fingers and click open in new tab, it opens in a new window with the content. What gives? What settings do I need to change? [link] [comments]

How to tell what's making symptomsd spin my cpu? Posted: 25 Nov 2021 02:59 PM PST I got my new MBP a few days ago and am of course running 12.0.1 on it. Pretty much from the beginning I've noticed symptomsd keeps running w/ pretty high load. If I reboot it goes away for a bit and then sometime later it returns. I'm currently using App Tamer to limit it less than 20%, so that's helping a bit and obviously the M1 has plenty of headroom to not notice the impact, but still. I've read that it might be related to network issues, but I'm only running wifi and that has been solid. There was a 3rd party cloud sync app that seems to be crashing on M1 (it runs fine on 12.0.1 on Intel), but I've made that not load at boot thinking that was it but symptomsd is back at it again. Any way to figure out what's causing this to run? [link] [comments]

kernelmanagerd - high CPU usage Posted: 25 Nov 2021 01:15 PM PST Since I upgraded to Monterey from High Sierra, kernelmanagerd has been running all the time and constantly been using 30% of my cpu. I've done some research and the main causes were supposed to be old software, especially antivirus softwares and badly written .ktext extensions. I removed about every old incompatible software but that didn't change anything. Then I searched for the /Library/Extension file which for some reason doesn't exist. I searched .ktext in finder but without results, so .ktext files don't seem to exist on my machine. Unplugging external USB devices also didn't solve anything. I don't know what else I should try/what to do at this point... [link] [comments]

Activity Monitor doesn't display Kind by default (Catalina) Posted: 25 Nov 2021 11:23 AM PST I'm running Big Sur (at least untill certain Monterey bugs get ironed out). I have an M1, so naturally I want to see "Kind" in Activity Monitor, should I need to diagnose performance issues. But I have to manually select "Kind" from the view menu everytime. Is there any way to make it appear as a default column? [link] [comments]
Switching spaces / desktops can only be canceled sometimes Posted: 25 Nov 2021 11:18 AM PST Turns out switching desktops / spaces can indeed be canceled but only under certain conditions as it is currently bugged (by "canceling" I mean pressing Ctrl+Left immediately after Ctrl+Right in order to cancel it). It is clear why this is happening: When on the last desktop / space, Ctrl+Right can't be used to cancel the counterpart. If on the first, Ctrl+Left can't be used for canceling. This only makes sense, because macOS locks you from going to the right, when you are on the most-right desktop and vice-versa. However, initiating a move to another space (i.e. Ctrl+Left on the last desktop) does not free the Ctrl+Right command immediately, but it should. This is especially annoying and present since the new 120Hz animations for switching desktops take ~3 times as long as they used to with 60Hz (I don't know how this makes sense to Apple and I hope that they fix the new loooooooooooong switching animations as soon as possible, because Ctrl+Number works as fast as with 60Hz and it is a dealbreaker for me, but this is another story). Here is a video showing the bug in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8NKsAMhQJM I made a different post today detailing a lot of issues with macOS I have since the new slower 120Hz animations. But since the above is actually a bug, I thought I should post it separately. [link] [comments]
Inconsistent Handoff functionality Posted: 25 Nov 2021 11:07 AM PST It never seems to work until I toggle bluetooth on and off on my MacBook. I have a trackpad and keyboard connected for when I'm hooked up to my monitor. They're constantly connected because I'm only a few feet away from my monitor. Could this be causing issues?
