Weekly /r/iOSGaming Discussion - What have you been playing lately and what do you recommend?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 05:00 PM PDT

Please use this thread to discuss whatever iOS games you've been playing lately. They don't have to be new games, they can be old games and they do not have to be iOS original titles!

As long as it's an iOS game it belongs in here. Make sure to put the name(s) of the game(s) in bold to make it easier for people skimming the thread to see what you're talking about, and if you'd like to make it really convenient turn the game name into a hyperlink that sends people directly to the App Store!

To keep track of the thread, the comments are sorted by "new" by default.

After covering 500+ mobile games, these are what I consider the best aRPGs as of 2021!

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 10:03 AM PDT

After making 100+ tl;dr game recommendation posts here on the sub over the years, I figured I'd start categorizing some of my all-time favorites + the favorites of other players within each genre into these types of posts / videos.

And I wanted to start with one of my personal favorite genres; mobile action RPGs (roguelike RPGs will get a separate post). I hope you'll enjoy it, and share your own favorites below for others to discover <3

Watch the video version here (for my thoughts on each game): https://youtu.be/aupTYaEBeWo

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 09:40 AM PDT

I am a big fan of games such as the Tales of series, tales of vesperia, etc. and final fantasy and was wondering if there's any full fledge proper rpg games you guys would recommend? (Paid or free) I remember chaos rings was a good series but it's gone now, so if there's any JRPGs you think is worthwhile then drop it below :)

Easy/simple multiplayer for gf and I

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 08:25 PM PDT

Hey all, as title says I'm looking for an easy game to play with my gf while she's at work, some kind of game where we can both make progress towards the same thing together. She's not a serious gamer so I'm hoping for something simple for her to pick up and play with me while she has free time at work or something. Maybe something like stardew valley or that chicken hatching game. Paid or free. Also willing to try some apple arcade titles since we both have the free 3 month trial from getting new phones. Thanks!

What game have you spent the most hours playing?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 12:07 PM PDT

Aka : what games have the highest replay value to keep you engaged for a long time. I play in both iPhone and iPad, with and without a controller.

Best iPhone Controller Setup Opinions 2021

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 12:11 PM PDT

Hoping for some detailed long term opinions from this sub regarding controller setups, even better if you've tried more than one. I've been indecisive over the past couple weeks while looking for a controller after realizing how good iOS gaming has become, and how good it's going to get because of the performance levels we're approaching along with high refresh rate displays.

Main talking points I'm hoping to see:

    • Compatibility with games/services
    • Companion app support
    • Durability
    • Portability and Ergonomics
    • Case compatibility

    Main Contenders:

    • Any official PS/Xbox Controller & Clip
      • This is the easiest route and I view it as a high durability setup long term. Easy to swap batteries but separate charging is one downside. Kind of bulky in terms of transport as well. Open to suggestions on the best brand clip for this setup.
    • Backbone One
      • The sleekest option, I'd love this controller if it weren't for the frankly ghetto fix necessary for the 13 pro and I'm also concerned for the long term durability of the lightning connector.
    • Steelseries Nimbus+
      • These can be found open box pretty cheap, worthy competitor to a PS/Xbox setup since it'll likely come in cheaper if comparing new/open box pricing. Lightning charging is a plus as well.
    • Razer Kishi
      • Less of a fan of the Razer aesthetic and bulkiness of this controller but it's regularly cheaper than the backbone and appears to have less durability/compatibility concerns. Companion app support is another story, doesn't look good at first glance but I'm not sure how much of an impact that has if it works fine for games.

I excluded anything that looked cheap or bulky but happy to entertain other options.

    Is mobile gaming improving somewhat?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 05:04 PM PDT

So since freemium shallow timewasters has taken over the platform I have spent many years trying to find deep, non-predatory and ad-free games while remaining free-2-play. It was nearly impossible. Closest I've gotten until a year ago was Brawl Stars and that is just lootboxes: the game. That changed when League of Legends Wild Rift in SEA alongside Genshin Impact.

Despite being a gacha game, GI has plenty of content that is deep, high quality alongside a massive open world unseen on the platform. So good that both Apple and Google crowned it GOTY. Revolutionary for being a mobile game thats for sure.

Wild Rift was the penultimate MOBA and gave mobile its ability to be an eSport platform. With Horizon cup on the… horizon (lmao) it shows that players can really be sportsmen with an iPhone. Nothing in LoL is paid outside of cosmetics. While slightly expensive it really shown that you don't have to exploit customers to be on mobile.

Then 2021 came, we got Runescape 3. Free RS isn't really THE game but its playable and works exactly how it does on PC. Once subscribed, it is completely playable outside of some cosmetic content and entirely optional boosters. So basically its WoW on mobile (and not a dying breed).

Finally, this week Diablo Immortal (yes, THE infamous "don't you all have phones?" flop) opened its beta to Australia and Canada on Android. Being the first time in the West, it surprisingly became applauded for its deep and engaging gameplay and acceptable business practices. Scale is almost on-par with the PC variants of Diablo. Despite Blizzard being a shit company, they certainly proved some of the skeptics wrong. I'm excited for an Overwatch port.

The future is looking bright with the above games releasing as well as Riot also developing a Valorant port. What are your thoughts? Does mobile gaming not look so grim moving forward?

Oh and don't forget cloud gaming which is another feat altogether! And Sky is an honourable mention absolutely…
