FYI: if you want a "MiniDrive" for the new MacBook Pro's SD slot...

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 06:47 PM PDT

For those that may not recall, the MiniDrive was a very compact microSD adapter that would fit in to the old Macbook's SD slot. It was flush with the case, so it wouldn't snag on things, and it had a little removal tool (or a fingernail lip, dependent on the brand / model you bought).

A company called BaseQi still makes them! I decided to see if any of their current models fit, and the model 303A (for the old MacBook Pro Retina 13") fits perfectly, although it is silver in color so it looks a little odd with the space gray.

There isn't massive demand for them, so the Amazon seller has sold out for now, but here's a non-affiliate link to the Amazon page, and the manufacturers storefront (note: ships from Taiwan).

Oh - and I've tested it with a 128gb and a 1tb microSD card, and it works perfectly. Hopefully this will be helpful for those that can't afford to max it out on storage:)

Low power mode is actually insane. 18 hours of screen time, on a single charge. Best I managed before was 15 hours, with the screen brightness cranked down a ridiculous level..

First Week with my MacBook Pro 14” – “It’s Beefy”

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 11:36 AM PDT

Last Tuesday I was one of the lucky ones to receive their new M1 Pro MacBook Pro on launch day. Having spent a week using it a lot, I'd like to share my experience so far.

I upgraded from a 2016 13" MacBook Pro 256GB SSD 8GB RAM to the base model MacBook Pro 14" M1 Pro 512GB SSD 16GB RAM (base cores.)

My 2016 MacBook Pro fulfilled most of my needs but it did have some sluggish issues and occasional windows crashing if I had many tabs or apps open at the same time. Also, the battery was replaced once and was starting to have charging issues and the display was also replaced once after it failed on me. (I got it repaired via the apple service program – free of charge.)

That is why I upgraded to the base model of the MacBook Pro 14" – aside from watching YouTube and typing papers, I also use my MacBook Pro to open 30-40 tabs across several web browsers, stream, listen to music, photos, etc. but otherwise my needs are fairly basic.

So far, the best way I can describe this laptop is "it's beefy!" Everything about this MacBook feels "beefier" than my previous one. From the internal hardware to the outer shell, here is a side-to-side comparison:

    - Processor: Significantly faster and smoother experience. Feels like a beast.

    - Battery: Easily an all-day battery life that charges quickly. (I am aware that battery life does degrade after the newness wears off, so I'm enjoying that "new car" feeling as much as possible for now.)

    - Return of Magsafe: YES! Love it! My old MacBook only had USB-C charging and while I'm not hating on that, I prefer the "snap" of the magsafe charger plugging into the new MacBook and the tactile feedback it provides. Plus, my old MacBook had some charging issues about 3-4 years in – we'll see how this new one holds up over the years.

    - Display: Beautiful and looks noticeably bigger and more vibrant than my 13"

    - Storage: I never filled up my 256GB SSD on my previous MacBook so this 512GB seems like more than I could ever need!

    - Keyboard: Improved overall. I didn't hate the butterfly keyboard on my past MacBook (a controversial opinion, I know) but I can definitely see an improvement in this newest MacBook: keys feel sturdier and may require a tad more pressure than the butterfly keyboard but are super snappy and responsive.

    - Touch Bar: At first, I liked it on my old MacBook but it soon became a tiresome gimmick. I don't miss it at all on the new mac.

    - Camera: 1080P camera looks significantly better than the old MacBook camera – to the point where the old MacBook looks almost grainy – especially in lower light areas!

    - Notch: Another controversial opinion, but I really don't mind it at all: all our iPhones have it and it blends in with the background well. I find it smart that Apple smashed the menu bar against the notch so the actual screen is almost edge-to-edge. It looks good in my opinion. (I guess I'm not that picky in general.)

    - Outer Shell: Much heavier and thicker than the old MacBook – I actually like the "beefy" feel of the new MacBook! I was never interested in apple's obsession with thinness and I'm definitely a function over form type of guy. This MacBook fulfills that well.

    - Touch ID: Same – no noticeable difference.

    - Trackpad: Same – no noticeable difference – feels good.

Overall, this is the first MacBook in a while where I feel I want to make it my "forever mac." Once the battery degrades below 80%, I'll use AppleCare to replace it and use it for many years more. If something breaks, I'll try look at repair costs instead of an upgrade. I really want to try use this MacBook for the next decade! Let's see if that's possible. All in all, I'm thrilled about this new MacBook Pro 14" – it's unreal.

Should I get an M1 Pro MacBook to use some x86 apps?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 11:06 PM PDT

I've seen the M1 Pro works great for x86 games. I'm an Electrical Engineering student and need to use software that base on Windows x86, but in the meantime I really want a Macbook. Recently I gave up wanting to buy an M1 Air due to software incompatibilities. I'll be using Matlab, Python, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Ansys and some Siemens Windows based programs. Idk if M1 Pro is powerful enough to run these programs through virtualization and still get an adequate performance. If you have any idea about if the new M1 Pro is any better on running virtualized Windows x86 programs than the older M1 please give me some response...

I run a ryzen/rtx Windows based machine on my home so laptop will be extra for me to work outside. unfortunately it is not possible for me to remote desktop the home PC since the upload speeds are capped to 10 mbps in my country.

Ordering Macbook Air with different keyboard language.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 10:33 PM PDT

I am outside of the US and planning to order M1 Macbook Air from US Apple Store. There is an option to choose the language of the keyboard. If I select the Russian one, does the original English keyboard remains as well or there could be only one keyboard layout?

    My Macbook have a problem

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 10:15 PM PDT

    Hi!

This is my first post here

I bought a Macbook in April of this year and I have so many problems: the screen and some parts of inside(?)

Basically when I take up the MacBook, its start to make some rare sound in the mac case (like *clip*), and I though that's normal, but now the sound is more pronounced when I use the keyboard and trackpad.

Someone have the same problem? Or Someone know why is this sound?

Its only 3 or 4 month that I started use the Mac really well, and I soo carefull of it

    sorry for my English xd

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 10:55 AM PDT

Hi everyone, Should i buy the base model macbook pro M1 or should i just upgrade the Macbook air M1 to 16gb of ram?

Because i am worried that the Macbook air will overheat after 6-7 hours of use because it has no fan, But then i am also worried that the Macbook pro will be too slow for my workload.

Magic Mouse Scroll not working after wakeup (Monterey)

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 11:52 AM PDT

Since upgrading my MBAir M1 to Monterey, whenever it wakes up from sleep/standby, the scroll on my Magic Mouse no longer works. I have to unpair it in the Bluetooth settings and re-pair it again. But the next time the computer wakes up, the scroll is gone again. Never happened before Monterey.

    Anyone else?

    apple store extended return policy

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 08:18 PM PDT

apparently apple has an extended return policy for most items received after november 1st - it is possible that my 16" 2021 mbp qualifies? I received it on the 30th. Kind of curious because I might spring for a higher storage sku, but shipping times and my somewhat intensive workflow make a 2 week return unviable.

Company sent me a brand new M1 Macbook Air that is still boxed. Is this monitored?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 07:57 PM PDT

    1. It's still plastic-wrapped, box and even the items inside, the laptop still has the screen cover sheet thing. First-time setup when opened. Is there any indicator or anything to know if it's packaged with monitoring?
    2. If it is, are they supposed to let me know that this is being monitored?

I'm also connected to my own network/wifi/internet at home. After they send it, they just asked me for its serial number(I think for the damage/warranty purposes only?). Just a brief about me, I do web development. This is gonna be my main computer only and will store some personal data in it. Thank you!

    Student Searching for Suitable Mac

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 07:49 PM PDT

I'm a senior in HS and my Asus literally cracked its chassis the other day so I'm searching for a reasonably priced Mac to fit my currents needs and maybe even for college!

Here's what I need: - Adobe Suite; Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign (maybe even Premiere). I work freelance as a graphic designer so this is quite essential for me; good export times, no crashing (PLS). - Great battery life; I need about 6-8 hours using multiple tabs for emails and work, but maybe 4-5 hours doing rigorous tasks(?) - Portability; my old laptop was 5lbs so I think this wouldn't be an issue even if something like a 16-inch Mac is recommended - Price; my budget is a bit awkward from $1000-$1400. I don't mind purchasing a used one.

    Please help 😭

New Macbook Pro 14 promotion / disccount black friday?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 07:34 PM PDT

Im wondering realisitcally if apple will give some sort of free stuff / discount this black friday for base model MBP14. Does apple usually do this on their newly released models? If so, does student discount work on top of the promotions?

Because I'm either considering to either buy one in store with student discount now, or just wait for black friday. And hopefully they will give free stuff on top of the student discount, or double discount or something like that?

Is this unlikely and not realistic?

MacBook Pro M1 zoom bug help

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 07:33 PM PDT

Before we begin, this is NOT a resolution issue. I know how to change resolution and that doesn't fix this issue. It is also NOT a zoom issue. MacBook thinks I am completely zoomed out.

Now for the issue. Periodically, my MacBook thinks the screen is larger than the viewport. The dock is completely hidden under the bottom edge, totally offscreen. I can still mouse over it and select things from the doc but I can't see them.

The right side also thinks it is off screen and every window hangs over the right side as well. Ie if I maximize a window both the right and bottom edges goo offscreen.

Everywhere I look online says this is a resolution issue but changing resolutions the MacBook still thinks the viewport is larger at every single size. Zooming out does nothing. The only fix is to restart. Sounds like an easy fix but I have to save all my browser bookmarks and reopen all the apps I'm currently using which is really time consuming and freaking annoying.

If you know how to fix this without a restart or even prevent it please let me know.

MacBook Air M1 vs MacBook Pro 12.1

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 03:00 PM PDT

Pretty much what title says, I have the opportunity to purchase these two laptops for about the same price. While on the MacBook Air M1 (base model) side there is only 8gb of ram and 256gb of storage, it is brand new and have the perks of the M1 chip, also longer software support. MacBook Pro 12.1 side it has 16gb of ram and 500gb of storage and an i7 cpu, it is used but it is in a good condition. My biggest concern with this is software support.

What do you guys think which one of these is a better buy?

I tried wiping my sisters old MacBook Pro (2015) and it says "OS X couldd not be installed on your computer. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance"

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 05:53 PM PDT

I was trying to wipe my sisters info on her MacBook Pro 2015 since its being sold. I followed the Apple directions to shut down, press the command R and erase Macintosh HD. I tried reinstalling the OS X back and its giving me the error message above. The only option is to restart or quit the installer. But when I quit it takes me to "Select Start Up Disk" and there's nothing to select.

I don't know what to do. Does anyone have any advice?

Anyone upgrade from the m1 mbp to the 16 inch m1 pro(base model)?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 01:57 PM PDT

do you feel it's worth the ~800$ difference?

like i can probably get by with the m1mbp, in terms of speed. but that screen and speakers on the m1pro really lures me in... but damn it's ~$800 more

M1 Pro vs M1 Max Battery Life?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 05:38 PM PDT

I ordered an 16" M1 Pro MacBook but I am considering returning it for an M1 Max. My only concern is that I've read that the battery life on the Max is not as great, even when performing the same tasks.

Are there any somewhat scientific tests where they put the M1 Pro/Max side to side, performing the same tasks, and compare their battery life?

M1 Macbook Pro Higher CPU temps after update

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 05:16 PM PDT

    Hey there,

I've a Macbook for the first time in my life. I've bought it in September and I've been checking the CPU temps and it was 40ºc to 50ºc or less. Yesterday I've updated it to Monterey, and now the temps are on the 60ºc ~70ºc.

Anyone noted a increase on the CPU temps?

    (help a Macbook noob pls)

    Just ordered a new macbook!

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 03:42 PM PDT

Hey everyone! Just ordered my first MacBook, I plan on using it for work. However I need two monitors to do my job successfully. I haven't really found much info online yet, but does anyone have any recommendations? Also, need a smaller monitor that could potentially attach to my MacBook or is small enough to travel with! Thanks in advance for the help!
