Posted: 05 Nov 2021 06:49 PM PDT Current specs: MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports), 2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5, 16 GB memory, Intel Iris Plus Graphics 1536 MB, 512GB storage So, I use it mostly for recreation and school, but I also like to make/edit youtube videos from time to time and intend on getting more serious with that. It has been pretty good for doing videos and I haven't had any problems. However, I was honestly so pissed when the M1 chips came out shortly after I got this one. Especially when I heard how much faster they were. The biggest thing that irks me about this particular macbook is the unnecessary loud fan at random times when I am not even doing anything intensive. I have never owned any mac before, but it sounds like this is a bigger issue with this specific model year? I would probably get the 13" upper tier model with 512GB. I would be going down from 16 to 8gb memory, but I also heard that the M1 chips make this not a big deal? Like they are still better at even 8gb ram? Now, I don't want the newest models because A) hella more expensive, B) I personally love the magic touch bar and don't want to give it up (sorry, but it gives me dopamine). C) I also like having just the 4 thunderbolt connectors for what I need. Being able to charge my macbook on either side is a great plus at times. D) I want to stay at 13". Trading in takes the price from $1500 to $719. So of course I have to weigh if that is really worth it lol. | Continuous beeping sound when laptop is shut down and charging with fast charger (16inch M1 Pro) Posted: 05 Nov 2021 10:18 AM PDT TLDR: The 16 inch M1 Max or Pro, have a behavior where if the battery is less than 60%, the computer is shut down, the lid is closed, and the MagSafe charger is connected they start beeping intermittently at regular intervals (about 5 seconds between beeps) and the charger light turns on and off repeatedly (as opposed to staying a solid color). So far, this behavior only occurs if your laptop is at or blow 60% charge, you have hit shut down, closed the lid, and attached the mag safe charger (there might be other combinations that yield the same thing, but this is what made it happen on my end). Hi everyone. I have a 16 inch M1 Pro and M1 Max, the issue only occurs with the M1 Pro and only happens when the following criteria are met: 1) Computer has to be SHUT DOWN (so not just closing the lid) 2) lid is closed 3) fast charger with MagSafe is put in place. If this sequence is done there is a continuous beeping noise that occurs every 5 seconds or so (it sounds like the charging chime that should only occur once, when the charger is connected). It is entirely reproducible and happens every single time I do the above. It does NOT occur with my 16 inch M1 Max, there is either a single chine or no sound at all. I am not sure if this is impacting the charging of the laptop or not. I only noticed it by accident last night and had a few minutes to mess around with it and find out that the other laptop does not show this behavior. Has anyone else with the 16 inch M1 Pro (or any other MacBook) noted this issue (I dont usually shut down my laptop, so it was entirely by coincidence that I found out about this)? Edit/update: I ran the apple diagnostics at startup and it says no issues found. The beeping still persists. Another update: we reproduced the problem with 2 other 16 inch pro models (these are the base models with only upgrade SSD to 1TB). Different chargers used. I was lucky that two of my friends have the same setup and we just tested this. Shut down first, close lid, then connect mag safe, beeping begins and does not stop, also the light on the mag safe connector blinks which seems to indicate intermittent interruption of charge. Another update: now im able to replicate the problem on my M1 Max as well and I think I know why it wasn't happening before and why the other user couldn't reproduce it. I am now fairly confident most should be able to reproduce the issue (since 4/4 Macs have been able to reproduce it thus far). I charged the battery of the M1 Pro to full and tried it and the issue did not occur, while I drained the battery of the M1 Max (the one that before seemingly did not have the issue) to 60% and the beeping started and the charging became intermittent with the light on the charger going in and out (again you have to shut down, close the lid, then attach the mag safe charger). I think this is probably a much more widespread thing (I hesitated to call it an "issue" now as I am not really sure if it is causing a problem, but it is certainly abnormal and annoying) and people just haven't noticed it yet. If you have one of these devices, try the method I described once you get to less than 60% charge and see if you can reproduce the situation. [link] [comments]  | ||

I am a sys admin and have always traditionally used a VM hosted elsewhere for some windows related tasks however I am curious how fluid the new MacBooks run paralells with windows VM? I have one of the intel 16 inch MacBooks currently and while it does decent it definitely slows down and runs hot while doing this. I love the keyboard, the speakers and the notch is not bad either. | mbp 16 cannot run external display without severe lag Posted: 05 Nov 2021 09:25 AM PDT I have a mbp16 8-core, 32gb ram, 1tb ssd and 16gb gpu. I connect it to an lg 34" 5k display for work. Problem is that it becomes so slow up to 8 second lag making it unusable. Is there a solution for this? I intended to use my mbp as a desktop replacement, but I've had to abandon it until I can find a fix for the lag that occurs when connecting external display. I ordered a fully loaded m1 max but it wont be here until next month, I'm hoping that it will be able to run my 5k external display? [link] [comments]  | ||
| USB Mouse Issues, MacBook Air 2017 Posted: 05 Nov 2021 07:05 AM PDT Hi everyone, I'm having some mouse issues with my MacBook - I'm hoping someone may have some idea of how to fix this problem, because it's driving me mad!! If I try to use a USB mouse or other USB device that controls the cursor (I have two Wacom tablets), the mouse behaves erratically. Trackpad works completely normally. I have 3 different USB mouses that I've tried to use, and all do the same thing. Both Wacom tablets do too. I've also tested all devices in both USB ports and have gotten the same result. I tried playing with the tracking, that didn't work. Tried changing the surface I'm working on, still the same issue! Any more ideas? I did my backups and have erased the hard drive using disk utility in recovery mode. BUT: when I try to reinstall MacOS (in this case the ancient machine is looking to download Lion) I keep getting the same error message: "Can't download the additional components needed to install MacOS." Recently got the base M1 MacBook Pro, the 13" variant, and I have been hesitant about using the lower power mode because I fear I may miss some notifications. (2 adapters w/ USB-C ports don't really work) Posted: 05 Nov 2021 07:10 AM PDT I have a very interesting scenario here and can't figure out what's going wrong. I have the new 16" MBP and also 2 USB-C adapters so that I can get more functionality. The two USB-C adapters I have are the following:
With both adapters, I have a laptop fan plugged and a Razer camera plugged into 2 USB ports. However, whenever i try to plug something (e.g. my USB-C Yubikey) into the USB-C port, it seems like my MBP doesn't like it. It constantly seems to "turn on" the adapter and turn it back off, every 1-2 seconds. Meaning, I can hear my USB-connected fan turn on and back off, as if the adapter is malfunctioning. The same thing happened with my Razer camera when I was using the USB-C adapter, so that made me switch the cable to a USB cable. I wouldn't be so confused if the same behavior wasn't happening with both adapters. Any thoughts as to why this may be happening? I could just have 2 malfunctioning USB-C adapters, but I'm hoping this isn't the case. [link] [comments]  | ||

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2018, Four Thunderbolt 3 Port) I suppose the title is quite self explanatory, however to describe the issue better - 2 or 3 weeks ago my keyboard backlight stopped working. At first i wrote it off as a keyboard defect and called my local repair store. Because I was busy I put off the repair until my keyboard lit up during a restart today for a few seconds and then turned off again. At that point i knew the keyboard is not the issue here so going off Google I performed a SMC reset and that of course did nothing. The catch is that when I go to system preferences -> keyboard, the option concering keyboard backlight is literally not there. As if the feature didn't exist. I thought that there was hardware damage but apparently the keyboard is fine. f5+f6 also don't do anything, nor do the touchbar keys. Any idea what this means or has anybody encountered someting similiar? All Google answers seem to sort this out through system preferences, what obviously, is not an option for me. Thanks a lot! | Only one external monitor over TB4 with M1 Pro? Posted: 05 Nov 2021 06:05 AM PDT Hello there, has anyone experience on using the latest MBP with a docking station? I connected a ThinkPad Thunderbolt 4 docking station with 2 DP and 1 HDMI Port, but in each possible combination, my 2 external displays will only show the same picture. Now I wonder which is the cause for this - a faulty dock or a M1 Pro limitation (which might be gone with an M1 Max?). I could connect the second monitor via the inbuilt HDMI, but I expected TB4 to allow a "one-cable-connects-it-all" policy.
