It is a major oversight that apple does not have a master volume control for apps

    Posted: 29 Nov 2021 07:04 PM PST

For example, what if I want to listen to Spotify and open another app at the same time where I cannot turn off the volume through the app, then I have to listen to both at the same time. It makes for a very annoying experience.

Went to the Apple store to fix my 2019 MacBook Pro 16 inch, left with a new M1 MacBook Air

    Posted: 29 Nov 2021 06:21 PM PST

As the title implies, I traded in my 16 inch for an M1 Air. I didn't even plan on doing it but I just realized that it makes more financial sense because an M1 Air is cheaper than a 16 inch while simultaneously being more performant.

Trade in value is actually pretty decent. I got the 16 inch used for ~$2k in 2020, and trade in value is $1420 for a 16 inch i9 9980H, Radeon 5500M graphics, 16 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD. The Air is only $1,150 + tax ($1,250 minus $100 for the Black Friday promo) so I got about $200 back.

M1 should be way faster than the i9 so pretty happy with the trade honestly, it's like I got a new laptop for free basically. Only thing missing is a GPU for gaming which I used Bootcamp for before, but I bought an RTX 3080 and 5900x so I don't need to use the MacBook for gaming anymore.

Edit: getting questions about what the fix was. Basically, macOS 12 bricked my T2 firmware so it had to be revived by the Apple configurator app. Apple, in their infinite wisdom, only let you use that app on another Mac when connected to the Mac needing the fix. I don't have another Mac so I had to go to the Apple store. After the firmware updated and the laptop was fixed (there were no hardware defects, it was just a software issue), I thought about what the trade in options were and found that an Air was probably the best choice now that I don't need a GPU anymore.

New MacBook Pro M1 Built-in DAC Rocks!

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 04:06 AM PST

After reading and watching a couple of reviews of the new MacBook Pro M1 Pro/Max. I wasn't expecting much from the new built-in DAC: The reviewers who bothered to say more than a few words about the analog jack dismissed it for "audiophile" listening.

I haven't done diagnostics of the built-in DAC with scopes connected to my new MacBook Pro 16" M1 Pro. Still, I am blown away by how great music sounds with it driving my 250 ohms Beyerdynamic DT 880 PRO studio headphones. And, the built-in DAC has no trouble driving the 250 ohms. Lots of volume to spare.

    Well done Apple!

M1 MBP battery at 87% health after 1 year, how's everyone else with a launch M1 doing?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2021 08:54 AM PST

System report shows the following for battery health:

Cycle Count: 61 Condition: Normal Maximum Capacitv: 87%

I also use CoconutBattery and it reports worse health (I think Apple factor in their battery management while Coconut does not).

Apple will will replace the battery if it retains less than 80 per cent of its original capacity and at this rate I'll hit that within the next year.

Report: Apple still working on multi-device charger, a future where all devices 'can charge each other'

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 08:21 AM PST

FYI Apple holiday promotions are misleading. You might not get the gift card if you purchase an iPhone.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 08:33 AM PST

I purchased an iPhone through the apple.com Black Friday promotion, but later I found out I was not qualified for the gift card because I wanted to keep my number and linked to my carrier during the purchase on apple.com. The small text on the main page didn't mention that I don't qualify. When I selected to link to my carrier it didn't mention I don't qualify.

After 2 calls to Apple support, I realized there is a small text that's found on the bottom of the full terms and conditions linked to on the main page small text: "iPhone devices purchased from ... carrier-connected iPhone devices (AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, or T-Mobile) do not qualify for this promotion. " https://www.apple.com/shop/gifts/shopping-event/terms-conditions

I just felt mislead. Both calls to Apple support ended abruptly for some unknown reason.

Files app keeps crashing/reloading file when opening big PDFs

    Posted: 29 Nov 2021 07:26 AM PST

I have this issue on both my iPad and iPhone. I noticed it only happens on files >200mb. It just reloads and goes back to the first page or the app crashes entirely. And the search function wouldn't work. Anyone else with the same issue?

2021 MacBook does not charge when it's completely shut down

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 06:12 AM PST

I recently purchased the new M1 Max MacBook and have been very impressed by it so far. Great Product. Recently I noticed that when the MacBook is shut down completely there is an issue with charging. As you can see in the video the LED on the charging cable repeatedly turns on and off and with each time it does you can hear the charing sound effect. Is this a known issue? Would be great if someone with a 2021 MacBook could confirm if they have this charging issue too when the MacBook is shut down. Thanks.

    Video: https://streamable.com/3lk0ec

UPDATE: Thanks for the replies. Just had a call with Apple Support and the issue has been solved. For those who are interested/affected by the same issue here is what I was instructed to do:

Shut down MacBook --> Click and hold power button for 10 seconds --> Now a new menu appears, click on "Options" and after that on "Continue" --> Log in to your account --> Now you should be in recovery mode. Here I was told to click on the apple logo on the top left and shut down the MacBook again.

After that I tested it with the magsafe cable and the issue was gone. I was able to charge the MacBook while it was shut down.

UPDATE 2: The solution above was only temporary. I just shut down the MacBook again and tried to charge it to see if the issue was completely gone. Same problem again. This should not happen on such an expensive device. I'm worried about the negative effects this may have on the battery and the device overall. The replies suggest that this only happens when using the 140W Charger.

Apparently a large number of people are having this problem. Apple should address this!

UPDATE 3: Contacted Apple Support again. This is what they said:

"Please know that Apple is aware of the issue and investigating. And based on the instruction given by Apple, please keep your macOS updated and do one of the following:

    1. Charge the computer while in sleep mode

    2. Charge the computer with the lid open

    3. Attach the MagSafe cable first, before shutting down the computer."
