I don't really like what Apple is doing with macOS. Posted: 05 Oct 2021 09:21 AM PDT Like, it so obvious that they're making things like iOS! The Big Sur redesign, the new iWork icons, the new Safari update, and even the wallpapers are now like iOS wallpapers. When Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone in 2007, he said, "Putting OS X on a phone" now it's basically putting iOS on a Mac, and I really don't like it. What are you guys' thoughts on this? How to automatically place desktop icons on a specific display Posted: 06 Oct 2021 01:55 AM PDT Any ideas on whether it is possible to automatically default a specific display to store folders/icons *without* that display being the primary display? Example: I have two external displays connected to my MBP and would like all folders, shortcuts, icons, other Desktop objects/clutter to appear by default on the internal MBP display (unless otherwise moved manually to another display), even though, while connected, one of my external displays is configured to be the primary. Not really anything important, just something I would personally like to see. [link] [comments]

Posted: 06 Oct 2021 01:31 AM PDT Seems like all web browser statistics don't really know about Big Sur because of the old User-Agent string. Are there any real numbers out there regarding the use of pre Big Sur systems? [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Oct 2021 01:08 AM PDT I use and love Macs for 15 years but what I like in Windows are the information popups that, well, pop up when hovering over a Finder item. Is there a way to have that in MacOS? Like an open-source app? Probably not, right? [link] [comments]
Does Apple expect users to use tabs instead of bookmarks in the new Safari? Posted: 05 Oct 2021 04:35 PM PDT I've been using bookmarks for as long as I've been using Safari, and I have them organized into folders. I also use the reading list occasionally. Both these features are found in the sidebar. In the newest version of Safari they changed the sidebar to require an annoying extra click to access either of them, and there is now a list of tab groups, and I'm wondering what I would use them for. I've heard people say that they have hundreds of tabs open at once, but my personal style is to open the tabs I need at work, then close them all at the end of the day when I'm going home. When I want to open a website, I type the address into the address bar, or look it up in my bookmarks if I can't remember the URL. This change to Safari seems like a subtle encouragement to keep all the tabs you need open all the time, but to me that seems sloppy and disorganized. Am I thinking about this wrong? Also, doesn't having dozens of tabs open eat up a massive amount of computing resources? Or are modern browsers good enough at putting tabs to sleep that it isn't an issue? [link] [comments]
MacBook Pro 15" 2019 TouchBar won't charge Posted: 05 Oct 2021 04:05 AM PDT I already lost my temper thrice about this in the last 5 Minutes. I ran bootcamp as usual and connected a USB mouse using a USB-C adapter - suddenly the screen goes dark and it shows me the "Please charge symbol" without warning. I held down the on/off key and it rebooted telling me in boot camp that it's charging and has 50% battery left. After starting Diablo 2 Ressurrected the same happened again - I thought it's the mouse or the adapter, I disconnected it and the issue was gone. I used a USB-C hub that I use since half a year w/o issue and the same happens again. I went to MacOS to do a BC update and saw that the Mac isn't charging at all there, I tried 2 different power plugs, 2 different cables and two different outlets, all of which worked in the past - it just won't charge. The battery status tells me that it needs service after just 380 cycles - I took a screenshot at around 330 cycles for eBay and the status was good. I run on 10.15.6, but I'm about to install Big Sur to see if that fixes it, but it seems like a hardware issue - on the other hand it charges in bootcamp so it might still be software related, any ideas? TimeMachine via router (MBP/Big Sur) - TM is requesting credentials Posted: 05 Oct 2021 09:21 PM PDT My router supports TimeMachine via the router admin menu, so I enabled it and selected the drive partition which I've been using for TM backups. Here's the sticking point. After selecting the TM partition in the TM setup, I'm getting the message: "Connecting to Archer AX21.Local" … followed by a prompt to enter name: password: The router manual provides no help about what to enter. Is this some version of my MBP login credentials? If so, I don't know what format it's looking for. I'd be grateful for any pointers. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Looking For An App. Clipboard Manager/ Templates Posted: 05 Oct 2021 08:45 PM PDT Hi! I'm looking for an app that can live in the menu bar ( or right click menu) that allows me to paste in pre-defined templates. All of the "clipboard managers" I have found seem to have clipboard history as the main focus, and not templates. Would love some advice. [link] [comments]
Can the iPhone screen share with Macs? Posted: 05 Oct 2021 04:49 PM PDT I'm thinking about getting an iPhone and if it had this feature I think it'd tip me over the edge. I have a Mac Mini I use as a media server and I currently screen share it with my Macbook Pro so I don't have to be in the same room to use it. Sometimes I like to use my phone so I currently use AnyDesk on my Mac Mini and Galaxy s20 for that but would prefer a native version if possible. Just wondering if that feature exists? Posted: 05 Oct 2021 07:41 PM PDT I'm on a mac laptop form 2011 - intel chip, on Big Sur 11.5.2. I'm trying to get a DJ MIDI controller (native instruments s4 mk I, if yr familiar) up and running for a gig this Sunday, buuuut surprise, it's not compatible with Big Sur. Company has discontinued support, and claims it's they're very very incompatible. I found this blog post claiming to get the older DJ hardware working for a new computer - https://www.paulchabot.ca/traktor-kontrol-s4-and-x1-catalina-setup/ I'm a little sketched out - a lot of the instructions involve disabling or modifying some security utilities that I'm not very familiar with. could be harmless! I'm doing some digging on my own, but i could some perspective on how common/secure some of these steps are. So - the steps:
/usr/sbin/spctl kext-consent add 83K5EG6Z9V
cd /Library/Extensionssudo chown -R root:wheel ./NIUSBTraktorKontrolS4.kextsudo kmutil load -p NIUSBTraktorKontrolS4.kext
and after that, you should be able to use the older MIDI controller. my questions - does this look trustworthy? is there any way that i can verify that the developer id does in fact belong to native instruments? some of the files being moved from the driver dmg onto the system are kernel extensions (kext files). is this normally how drivers are implemented for Mac? and do they usually need the permissions granted in the terminal command? haha iiiits a bit of an emergency - I need this controller for a gig coming up very soon. any advice or insight would be very helpful. many thanks!
