Should I upgrade to M1 Pro from my Intel i5 (2018)? Posted: 31 Oct 2021 07:07 PM PDT I'm currently using a 2018 MacBook Pro with the 2.3 i5 (4 core) and 8 GB ram. Currently, the machine runs...okay. Ram usually sits at 80% pressure while working (outputting to 2 monitors uses about 1 GB of ram). I can also hear the fans kicking in when using basic software like Office, MATLAB, lightroom, Parallels. I'm wondering if it's worth upgrading to the newer M1 Pro CPUs, or do you think my current machine is fine right now? Should I be feeling slowdowns with this year's (2018) computer? Starting medical school - 2020 M1 Air or 2021 M1 Pro MBP? Posted: 31 Oct 2021 10:47 PM PDT I think I know the answer to this question, but interested to hear other points of view. Starting 4 years of medical school where my use-case will be largely academic. Documents, some media content, research, fairly light stuff. I used to do quite a bit of creative content work such as wedding photography editing and processing, but not so much anymore. Mostly I need to be able to type lots and type fast. I presume the M1 air will be sufficient for the bulk of my needs, but my inner technophile would love to justify the base model of the latest MacBook Pro at over double the cost (!!). In particular the features of the higher refresh rate, the beautiful display and the I/O are what I love about the MBP. Is the keyboard something to be concerned about comparing the two? Can you tell me why you think I should buy one over the other? Thanks! [link] [comments]

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 11:05 AM PDT I initially used an Anker Hub (in February 2021) to connect my Seagate external hard drive to my 2020 M1 MacBook Pro but it only showed around 1% of the approximately 3.5TB on it. It showed some of the first few folders (alphabetically listed) on the drive and none of the rest. I assumed that the Anker Hub was faulty and sent it back for a refund. I then used an Apple USB-C to USB Adapter (from September 2021 onwards) to connect the same Seagate external hard drive and the same thing happened. I tried connecting a different hard drive (in an enclosure) to my M1 MBP but this time nothing at all showed up (apart from a kworking folder which led to a dead end). These hard drives work absolutely fine on my ASUS laptop. What's happening here? Will I ever be able to safely connect these drives to my M1 MBP? What experience have you had connecting your hard drives to your M1 MacBooks? [link] [comments]

2014 MacBook Air - Good for me? Posted: 31 Oct 2021 10:04 PM PDT Is the 2014 MacBook Air still a good option for students? I found one for sale for $200 and I was thinking of buying it to use for school. It has the i5 and 4gb of ram. I only need the MacBook to run Microsoft office, watch Netflix, and browse the web. Is this a good buy for me? [link] [comments]

Does the ISP on the M1 Pro/Max MBP work with USB-C external cameras? Posted: 31 Oct 2021 04:48 PM PDT I am using the Logitech 4K camera (the one designed to magneticlly attach to the Pro XDR display) but I am wondering if the ISP works when you attach external cameras thru USB-C. Simple question regarding video output on late 2021 MBP Posted: 31 Oct 2021 08:15 PM PDT I'm aware the HDMI 2.0 port max out at 4k60. The thunderbolt 4 ports support 6k 60 but other modes were not spelled out by Apple on the tech specs. I assume it will in TB / DP alt mode? And what would be the limitation? [link] [comments]
14 Inch MacBook Pro M1 Pro as a developer machine Posted: 31 Oct 2021 05:57 AM PDT I am working as a backend developer. I am using Golang, Java, Docker, and Kubernetes in my daily routine. I know these are M1 compatible. But did anyone have any major problems using M1 as a developer? [link] [comments]
Any way at all to tether an Android to a 2019 Big Sur MacBook for Internet? Posted: 31 Oct 2021 06:46 PM PDT I just got my first Apple product, without realizing this would be an issue. I'm in an isolated area where PDANet has been a lifeline, the only way for me to get any reasonable Internet connection. I thought I would be okay because I saw that there was a driver to let Androids USB tether... but once my MacBook arrived I realized it only works on some MacBook editions, and it doesn't work on Big Sur - so if I want to be able to get online with this one, I may just have to return or sell it and ironically look for an older one. Is there anything in the works to update HoRNDIS for Big Sur? Is it possible to install an older OS and use HoRNDIS? Is there any other workaround? Thank you! [link] [comments]
Recommended 1-plug dock (cheap)? Posted: 31 Oct 2021 06:32 PM PDT I just ordered my new M1 Max (16") and I'm super excited. I often need more than 1 monitor for my work, so I'm looking for a one-plug solution - are there any (preferably cheap and physically small/portable) docks that offer 2x displayport 4k60 (3x would be better, or higher refresh rate would be better) and pass-through charging? Bonus would be if it had at least one USB-A or USB-C port for peripherals, ethernet is another plus. With the return of the SD card slot on the MBP, I don't need that. Thanks! [link] [comments]
MacBook Pro i9 battery draining Posted: 31 Oct 2021 02:12 PM PDT Hi, my company ordered me a MacBook Pro 2019 i9 2.3 GHz last February. Since then, I usually use it plugged in, but when I try to use the battery I feel that it is lasting even less than my MacBook Pro 2015 i7. It also feels a bit slower on battery and can get warm. I'm not sure if I'm getting the right power amount out of it, as it says the battery status is Normal. Could it be another software or hardware issue that causes the heat, and battery draining? (The fans should be fine as they work loudly when it's warm). I tried to note the time and battery level at random points in different usage pressure: Thank you for any info that could help. As I'm currently working remotely from a city that doesn't have an Apple-authorized repair service. [link] [comments]
impact protection sleeve for 14" macbook pro? Posted: 31 Oct 2021 08:08 AM PDT I wonder if there's an impact protection sleeve that suit for 14inch macbook pro and can be pull or insert from top? (vertically) inside the backpack. [link] [comments]

Sound seems to be coming from one speaker at a time? Posted: 31 Oct 2021 10:52 AM PDT Apologies I am unable to really describe my issue, but it seems like the sound is coming from one speaker at at a time, if it makes sense. Especially during youtube videos. Is there some setting I can change and fix this? Thanks [link] [comments] |
